"Musti Office goes stores" strengthens Musti’s pack

As an employer, Musti wants to take good care of its pack. Our employee well-being is reflected in high employee satisfaction levels, and we do our best to make sure that all employees feel like they belong to the Musti pack. In 2023, Musti’s office employees in Finland got a chance to work at Musti’s stores.

The purpose of the “Musti Office goes stores” concept is to get Musti employees to know each other better and to increase mutual understanding of the impact office work has on stores and vice versa.

“As an experience, Musti Office goes stores was nice and memorable. It was great to meet the people who do the important work behind the scenes to help the stores’ day-to-day work. It was also fantastic to notice how the feeling of a Musti pack is present all over the chain! Together we had great ideas on how to further develop some of the store practices and processes,” says Musti ja Mirri Store Manager Sohvi Mattila.

Due to the positive feedback, Musti Office goes stores will continue in 2024 across the Nordic markets.

For the past two weeks, we have worked in close cooperation with the Finnish Food Authority, veterinarians, and suppliers to determine the cause of adverse reactions in pets.

The recent externally conducted laboratory analysis has now verified that the reason for pets falling ill is the high concentration of glycoalkaloids found in the foreign potato flakes. Testing was performed on both the raw material and the food product, revealing elevated levels of glycoalkaloids in both instances. Potato is a significant part of the recipe in our “SMAAK Adult Grain-Free Fish for Dogs” product in which the glycoalkaloid level was high. We have used these potato flakes in two of our products. Last week we removed these products from sale in their entirety.

“We extend our apologies to all our customers, with a special acknowledgment to those whose pets experienced health issues. This should have never happened. We will do everything we can to restore our customers’ trust in us. This is also a wake up call to the entire pet food industry, we should all push for established feed limits in the EU together with the European Food Authorities. Only then can we make sure that this can never happen again”, says Mr. David Rönnberg, CEO of Musti Group.

Musti Group’s store personnel in Finland, Sweden, and Norway have been offering advice and various services, such as training and in-store grooming, for pet parents for a long time. In-store services just may not reach all those who might be interested.

Musti’s online live lectures offer customers the opportunity to learn from and directly speak to a true expert in a specific field, such as a trainer or veterinarian, no matter where they are.

Being purely educational, the lectures provide easy access to new knowledge and help pet parents to care better for their pets.

Premium Pet Food factory brings a new level to sustainable pet food production

Locally and sustainably produced pet food is important for many pet parents, and Musti has been happy to respond to the demand. In April 2023, Musti acquired full ownership of the petfood factory Premium Pet Food Suomi Oy in Lieto, Finland.

At Premium Pet Food, the quality of the ingredients and products always comes first. Localness is one of the key elements in Premium Pet Food’s approach to sustainable pet food production. Most of the ingredients come from nearby farms, and the salmon and lamb are Nordic.

“The pet foods produced in the factory are consumed by Nordic pets. We produce in the factory for example SMAAK and Purenatural pet foods. This is real local food for Nordic pets. The impact on the environment is also smaller because the ingredients and the final products are not transported around the world,” says Premium Pet Food Factory’s Factory Director Mikko Isomäki.

The factory was also granted FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certificate) and ISO 14001 (environmental management system) certifications in May 2023.

At Musti, we want our employees to have the best possible know-how and skills. We invest significantly in onboarding and competence development.

In 2021, we launched Pawcademy to bring together all the different elements of competence building. Pawcademy consists of three main competence development areas: E-learnings, Face-to-face training, and Community learning.

To share information, tips, and inspiration, we organize a monthly live training session around specific themes. This year our focus has been on our food products and services.

Recently, we launched a new Nordic training framework aimed at Musti’s office employees. The framework provides tools for self-determination and giving and receiving feedback, among other things.

Sustainability throughout the supply chain

Musti’s supply chain plays an important role in our sustainability efforts, and we continuously develop it together with our suppliers.

We ensure that all our suppliers align with our sustainability objectives, requiring them to either endorse Musti’s or amfori’s Code of Conduct or to have their own Code of Conduct that Musti can approve.

Our sustainability actions also include minimizing emissions in transport, preventing energy loss in our warehouses and investing in sustainable pet food production.

Pawternity leave – a jumpstart for pet parenthood

Musti launched Pawternity leave in 2018, and it has been popular among Musti’s employees ever since. Musti’s employees can stay on Pawternity leave once every year. During the financial year 2022, as many as 34 Musti Group´s employees became pet parents and used the opportunity for Pawternity leave.

Interest and expertise in animal well-being is expected from all Musti’s employees, and most of them have at least one furry family member at home. Pawternity leave is available for all Musti’s employees whether they work at Musti’s offices, stores or warehouses.

Musti’s employees and pet parents Emma Husu, Anna Svensk and Louise Pahv have not heard that any other company would provide a similar benefit.

“Musti really appreciates that its employees want to gain more expertise on pets, and this is one way of showing support for pet parents.”

Feel Active takes dogs and their parents sustainably outdoors

Reducing environmental impacts is one of the basic principles that guides everything we do at Musti. We want to make sure that our products are high-quality and have a long life cycle.

"Sustainability always starts from the design. A dog reaches its full size in 6 to 18 months, depending on the breed, and some breeds can live as many as 18 years. High-quality puppy products are easy to pass on, and adult-size products are designed to last the dog's entire lifetime," says Tarja Rantonen-Piironen, Product Group Manager at Musti Group.

We are constantly looking for new ways to use recycled and sustainable materials in Feel Active products. The most popular Feel Active accessories have eco versions that contain recycled polyester made out of plastic bottles.

For example, a Training Eco harness is made from six 500 ml plastic bottles and an Eco leash contains material from 2.5 plastic bottles. The production process efficiency also ensures as low textile waste as possible.

Lend a helping paw – Musti is working for the common good

Musti wants to be a part of ensuring that the communities that we live in thrive, thus benefiting pets and their parents. Together with several associations and organizations across the Nordics, we work for a more animal-friendly future:

🐾 In Finland, we joined paws with SEY Animal Welfare. In July 2022, we donated 8,000 kilograms of dry dog food and distributed it through SEY to the Riihimäki reception center and different animal shelters in Ukraine.

🐾 The Swedish Animal Ambulance (Svenska Djurambulansen) helps pets and parents in difficult situations. Musti customers in Sweden have had the opportunity to support the Swedish Animal Ambulance by donating in connection with their purchase at arkenzoo.se.

🐾 In Norway, Musti has joined forces with Red Cross and their “A visiting friend with a dog” campaign, where volunteers and their dogs visit hospitals, nursing homes and private homes, meeting with people who might feel lonely or lack in social relationships.

Christmas is on its way and pet parents want to delight their furry family members with pawsome gifts!

Different activation games and activity mats are the most popular gifts every Christmas. Plush toys are also popular– this year, the various Christmas-themed dachshund plush toys are especially appealing. And don’t forget the always exciting p**p toys!

Christmas is naturally a great time to delight pets with delicious treats. For example, different chew bones and treat packages make an excellent gift for a dog.

A comfy bed is also a wonderful gift. This Christmas, larger pets might fancy the comfy and fluffy bed, while a cave bed would make any cat happy!

Paw in paw: More support for rescue pet parents

Taking care of pets and their parents in need is rooted deep in Musti’s company culture. When pet parents decide to adopt a homeless pet, Musti wants to be there to support the whole family.

The Rescue Pet concept is a new addition to Musti ja Mirri’s loyalty program in Finland. The concept will also be introduced to the loyalty programs of Musti in Norway and Arken Zoo in Sweden later this year. Tips and advice for rescue pet parents are provided on Musti ja Mirri’s website, including articles on taking care of rescue pets and suggestions of helpful products and services.

“Our goal is to support pet parents at all times. We want to provide useful tips, relevant products, and training services that a parent of a rescue pet might need. We try our best to support and encourage responsible rescue pet adoption and are there to help pets and their families adapt to their new life together,” says Essi Kivelä, Marketing Automation Manager at Musti ja Mirri and a parent of two rescue dogs, Blanca and Lumi.

07/09/2022

Strengthened by the puppy boom that started a couple of years ago, pet parents have created consistent purchasing behavior on higher quality and more premium food, as well as a more diverse range of products and services. This underlying trend that drives the long-term structural growth of the pet care market remains robust, shifting spend towards higher quality nutrition, a more diverse range of accessories and wider adoption of services.

Investments in our ecosystem and expanding our store network have supported welcoming an increasing number of pets and their parents to join the Musti ecosystem. Currently we have 140 stores in Finland, 128 stores in Sweden and 61 stores in Norway
