Puppy stomach problems: what to know and how to help!

Digestive upset is quite common in puppies. Their gastrointestinal system is still developing and adapting to new foods, surroundings, and routines, which can sometimes lead to temporary stomach discomfort.

Typical signs include:
– Loose stool or mild diarrhea
– Occasional vomiting
– Reduced appetite
– Gurgling sounds or visible discomfort

How to support recovery at home:
1. Make sure your puppy always has access to fresh, clean water.
2. In some mild cases, your veterinarian may suggest a very brief pause in feeding to let the stomach settle, but fasting is not generally recommended for young puppies.
3. When reintroducing food, offer small, frequent meals of a bland, easily digestible diet such as boiled chicken and rice.
4. Keep the puppy warm, calm, and well-rested.

Keep in mind!
🦠 Probiotics and prebiotics help maintain a healthy gut microbiome and support digestion after stomach upset or antibiotic treatments.

If symptoms persist for more than 24 hours or include repeated vomiting, dehydration, or lethargy, consult your veterinarian promptly.

A healthy gut means better nutrient absorption, stronger immunity, and overall well-being, starting from puppyhood.

Supporting your dog’s head and brain health

The brain is one of the most energy-demanding organs in a dog’s body. From early development to senior years, it controls movement, learning, memory, and even emotional balance. That’s why nutrition plays such a key role in keeping both the brain and the structures of the head, like nerves and sensory organs, functioning optimally.

Here are some key nutrients to focus on:
✨ Omega-3 fatty acids (especially DHA and EPA): Crucial for brain cell growth, nerve communication, and learning ability. These are especially important during puppyhood and in aging dogs.
🥩 High-quality proteins and amino acids: Support the production of neurotransmitters, the “messengers” of the brain.
🍇 Antioxidants (vitamins E, C, and plant polyphenols): Protect brain tissue from oxidative stress and support long-term cognitive health.
🥦 B vitamins (B6, B12, folate): Essential for nerve function, energy metabolism, and brain development.

Good to know: A well-balanced diet that supports brain function doesn’t just help with learning and focus, it can also promote calmer behavior, sharper senses, and better adaptability throughout life.

Because a healthy head truly means a healthy mind.

Good to know: Puppy development at 4–6 months

This is a big growth phase for your pup, both physically and mentally! Between 4–6 months, puppies are starting to look more like mini versions of adult dogs, but there’s still a lot happening behind those bright eyes.

What’s going on:

1. Teething time: Most puppies lose their baby teeth and grow their adult ones. Chewing helps relieve discomfort and safe chew toys are your best friend.

2. Learning curve: Their brains are developing fast, which means they’re curious, playful, and sometimes (or many times) a little stubborn. Keep training fun and consistent!

3. Social confidence: This period is important for positive experiences so meeting new people, animals, and environments helps build a confident adult dog.

4: Growth spurts: Puppies may look lanky or awkward as their bones and muscles grow rapidly. Balanced nutrition supports healthy development.

Keep guiding, teaching, and exploring together — these months lay the foundation for a happy, well-adjusted adult dog.

Let them explore: safely, but bravely!

One of the best things a breeder can do for the puppies’ development is to give both the mother dog and her litter space and freedom to move, explore, and experience the world.

Too often, we try to protect them by keeping the environment controlled and quiet. But puppies learn through exploration: by seeing, hearing, smelling, and feeling new things. Early exposure to different surfaces, sounds, toys, and gentle outdoor conditions helps build resilience and confidence that stays with them for life.

The mother dog benefits too. Allowing her to move around, stretch, and guide her pups naturally supports her well-being and keeps her instincts sharp.

Of course, supervision and safety come first — but don’t be afraid to let them get a little muddy, feel the wind, or encounter something unfamiliar. These moments teach puppies that the world is safe, interesting, and worth exploring.

Choosing the right breeder, and the right puppy buyer, matters.

A responsible breeder doesn’t just raise puppies — they build the foundation for a healthy, well-adjusted life. And a good puppy buyer ensures that foundation continues to grow.

Here’s what to consider:

If you’re looking for a breeder:
✨ Health first, ask about health testing and genetic screening.
✨ Ask to meet the mother and learn how the puppies are raised.
✨ Look for transparency, support, and a willingness to answer every question.

If you’re a breeder looking for a home for your puppies:
💛 Choose families who understand the breed and the commitment it takes.
💛 Make sure they’re prepared for the lifelong responsibility — not just the puppy stage.
💛 Keep communication open — the right match benefits both the puppy and the people.

The right connection between breeder and buyer sets the tone for a lifetime of health, trust, and happiness.

What NOT to feed your puppy (and why)

Those big puppy eyes make it hard to say no to sharing a snack — but some human foods can actually be harmful for growing pups. Here’s what to avoid 👇

🚫 Chocolate, coffee and caffeine: Contain theobromine, which dogs can’t metabolize — even small amounts can be toxic.
🚫 Onions, garlic and chives: Can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.
🚫 Grapes and raisins: May cause kidney failure in dogs.
🚫 Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum or sweets): Can lead to a dangerous drop in blood sugar.
🚫 Cooked bones: They can splinter and injure the digestive tract.
🚫 Fatty or salty foods: Can upset digestion and, over time, harm the pancreas or kidneys.

Puppies have delicate systems that are still developing — what they eat now shapes their health for life. Stick to a balanced puppy diet designed for growth, and save the table treats for yourself!

Puppy brain development starts early — and continues long after they leave the breeder.

During the first few weeks, while still with the breeder, a puppy’s brain is rapidly forming connections. This is when early socialization, gentle handling, and exposure to everyday sights and sounds help shape how they perceive the world.

Once they move to their new home, brain development continues! This is the perfect time for learning — every new smell, surface, person, and experience helps strengthen those neural pathways.

To support this growth, nutrition plays an important role:
✨ DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid): vital for vision and cognitive development.
✨ High-quality proteins and amino acids: the building blocks of brain cells.
✨ Antioxidants and vitamins (like E and C): protect developing cells from stress.

Balanced nutrition, play, and positive early experiences lay the foundation for a curious, confident, and well-adjusted adult dog. 💛

Sleep – one of the most important factors in puppy development.

Adequate rest supports healthy growth, brain development, learning, and emotional balance. During sleep, a puppy’s body releases growth hormones, strengthens the immune system, and consolidates everything they’ve learned while awake.

How much is enough?

Young puppies may sleep up to 18–20 hours a day, while older pups gradually settle into a more regular routine. Consistent, undisturbed sleep in a calm environment helps prevent stress and supports steady development.

Puppy fur is one of nature’s sweetest wonders!

Most puppies are born with soft, fluffy coats that start changing around 4–6 months as their adult fur grows in — often thicker, coarser, and sometimes even a different shade or pattern. ✨

But did you know there are exceptions?
🐩 Some breeds, like Poodles or Portuguese Water Dogs, have hair that grows continuously and doesn’t “shed” the same way.
🐕‍🦺 Double-coated breeds, like Huskies or Shepherds, develop a dense undercoat later for insulation.
🦴 And some short-haired breeds barely change at all!
