Sad truth for some

Domesticated animals have been selectively bred to possess ideal traits for what humans are looking for.

For horses, these traits may be related to their athletic potential, but we have also bred them for their willingness to obey the commands of humans and their trainability.

This aspect of how we have selectively bred them is important because it explains how humans are able to relatively easily get horses to submit to doing tasks that they may otherwise not want to do.

Because of this, it’s important to be cognizant of the fact that we can, generally, force horses to do things they don’t want to do.

That doesn’t mean that everything we get horses to do is forced, though.

It’s just something to be mindful of, particularly when it’s fairly common to hear people claim it’s not possible to force horses to do something due to their size.

While we may not be able to physically overpower horses on a pound to pound basis, highly aversive tools are pretty common in the horse industry.

Such tools can be used to give the impression that we CAN physically overpower horses, by causing them enough discomfort that they feel they need to respond in order to escape that discomfort.

Using fear based tactics can also be used to achieve psychological coercion and create responses from the horse out of fear.

The takeaway is this:

Humans can absolutely force horses to do tasks.

Claiming that we cannot is a cop out that can be used by people to downplay the level of force being used and shrug off how distressing it might be to the horse by claiming “if they didn’t want to, they wouldn’t.”

Being honest with the tactics used and how horses are likely to respond as a species allows for us to be better and more mindful trainers.

Lastly, it’s important for us to be honest with OURSELVES with the intent of the language we use.

There’s an awful lot of sayings in the horse industry that serve the purpose of alleviating guilt and misrepresenting training tactics being used.

Of course, not everyone does this, but it’s common enough that it’s worth becoming aware of such speech patterns and catching ourselves when we’re doing it.

At times horses do express how they truly feel about humans with their silly fairytale of them "loving their jobs so much..."
But humans don't listen and don't care, they just call them naughty, they punish them and they peacefully go on with their lies to keep enjoying their selfish exploitation 🤦🏻‍♀️
