21/01/2025

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new entry requirement for travelers visiting most European countries.
If you’re travelling to France this summer, here’s the information you need to know:

✈️ WHY? The ETIAS is being introduced to strengthen border security and control migration. By collecting data before arrival, authorities can prevent potential security threats from entering the Schengen Area, while simplifying and speeding up border checks for low-risk frequent travelers.

✈️ WHEN? The ETIAS system is expected to come into effect in mid-2025, though the exact date may still be subject to change. A transition period will follow, allowing travelers time to adapt to the new requirement.

✈️ WHO? Visitors from around 60 visa-exempt countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many others, will need to apply for ETIAS before traveling to the Schengen Area, which includes 29 European countries.

✈️ HOW? Travelers from visa-exempt countries must complete an online application before their trip. The application will ask for personal details, passport information, travel history, and security-related questions. Most applications will be processed within minutes, but some may take up to 30 days if additional checks are needed.
A fee of €7 is required for applicants aged 18-70 but is free for minors and seniors over 70. An approved ETIAS allows short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) for tourism, business, or transit purposes and is valid for 3 years, or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first.

Moving to France as an expat can be exciting but also challenging. Here are our tips to help you transition smoothly:

🧳 Arrange accommodation before your arrival - Searching for housing while adjusting to a new country can be overwhelming. By arranging at least temporary accommodation before arriving, you’ll have a stable base while handling other important aspects of your move.

🧳 Apply for your visa well in advance - To avoid stress and delays, start your visa application process as early as possible, ideally 2-3 months before your intended move. Always verify the specific requirements for your visa type, provide all documentation requested and be prepared to explain your moving plans in detail.

🧳 Bringing hard copies of essential documents is highly recommended when moving to France. French bureaucracy often requires physical copies of paperwork, even if you’ve submitted them digitally. Being well-prepared will save you time and reduce stress.

🧳 Sign up to French lessons when you arrive - Speaking French will help you integrate more smoothly into French life and build confidence in daily interactions. Many cities offer affordable or free language courses through organizations like OFII.

🧳 Get to know other local expats - Meeting other expats can provide support, friendship, and valuable resources to help you settle in. Other expats can share insights about navigating French bureaucracy, finding housing, local services or job opportunities.

🧳 Be patient and open-minded - this is essential for a successful and enjoyable expat experience in France. By embracing the cultural differences and allowing yourself time to adapt, you’ll find the transition smoother, more rewarding and full of memorable experiences.

🧳 Seek professional assistance from Ask the Expat Girls - We are here to make your transition into French life as smooth and stress free as possible, allowing you to focus on settling into your nouvelle vie ☺️

Here’s our step by step guide on how to “get PACSed” in France.

Getting PACSed (entering into a Pacte Civil de Solidarité) in France is a legal process that allows two adults to formalise their relationship and enjoy certain legal benefits, similar to marriage but with fewer obligations. Here are the eligibility requirements and documents to provide:

📝 You both must have a shared residence/address and neither partner can be married or already PACSed.

📝 You both must draft and sign a PACS agreement (Convention de PACS), which outlines your shared responsibilities, as well as a sworn statement declaring no family relations between partners. A simple model can be downloaded from official French websites, or you can consult a notary (notaire) to draft a custom agreement.

📝 If your partner is French, they must bring a copy of their birth certificate (dated within 3 months) as well as their ID to the appointment.

📝 If your partner is also an Expat, they will need to provide their ID, their original birth certificate and a certified translation of this birth certificate.

📝 Expats wishing to be PACSed will also have to provide a Certificate of non-marital status (Certificat de célibat) issued by your home country as well as a Certificate of custom law (Certificat de coutume) confirming your legal capacity to enter into a PACS.

📝 Book an appointment to get PACSed at your local mairie (town hall).

📝 Make sure that both partners bring all requested documentation, identification and proof of shared address to the appointment.

French planning permission is notoriously complex! To apply for planning permission for construction works on your property, you need to follow a formal process regulated by French planning laws. Here’s our step-by-step guide:

🏠 Choose the permit which best fits your project! There are 2 main types:
- Declaration Préalable (DP): Required for minor works, such as small extensions, fences, or changes to facades.
- Permis de Construire (PC): Needed for major construction projects, including new buildings, extensions, or structural modifications.
You can check with the local Mairie (town hall) to confirm the type of permit required.

🏠 In some some government protected areas, you may need to ask for permission from the Architectes des Bâtiments de France.

🏠 Once you have chosen the permit required, prepare and submit your application to your local mairie (town hall).

🏠 Place the Déclaration Préalable or Permis de Construire on the outside of your property so that locals have the right to object to the works (within 2 months).

🏠 Wait for the approval from both the mairie and Architectes des Bâtiments de France before beginning any works.

🏠 If you have received no response from the mairie after 2 months, then you have the approval to start!

For more help and advice on planning permission in France, send us a PM or email us at [email protected]

Moving to France? Here’s our “to do” list for your first 12 months in France!

✔️ Validate your visa - You have 3 months from your arrival in France to validate your visa. This must be done online through the ANEF website.

✔️ Open a French bank account 🏦 You’ll need it for renting apartments, receiving salaries, and utilities. Bring proof of identity, address, and visa status.

✔️ Obtain a French SIM card/mobile number - Providers like Orange, SFR, Bouygues, or Free Mobile offer options. You’ll need a French phone number for many administrative tasks.

✔️ After 3 months of living in France, you may register with the French healthcare system by applying for a French social security number at any CPAM office. Once you have received your social security number, you may then apply for your physical Carte Vitale.

✔️ Register with the French tax office by applying for your personal tax identification number (NIF). With this, you can start declaring within the French tax system, even if your income is sourced outside of France.

✔️ Find a local GP (médecin généraliste) and consider opting for additional private healthcare cover (mutuelle).

✔️ If you have relocated your pets from your home country, make sure they have the correct vaccinations, have all the required documentation recognised by French authorities and that they’re fully insured.

Don’t forget these important administrative steps to follow once you’ve given birth in France:

👶 In France, you have 5 days to declare and register the birth of your baby at your local mairie (town hall).

👶 Declare the birth to Ameli/CPAM (French health insurance) and add your new baby to your Carte Vitale, which then must be updated at any pharmacy.

👶 Declare the birth with La CAF (Family benefits organisation) in order to receive child benefits and receive information and payments of maternity, paternity and parental leave.

👶 If you have additional private healthcare, declare the birth with this organisation to receive financial support for your hospital stay and postnatal appointments.

👶 Update your personal tax information on your online Impôts account.

👶 And of course, take the time to rest and enjoy your new bébé!

Preparing thoroughly for a French visa interview can make a significant difference in the approval process. Here are our key tips to help prepare :

📁 Bring hard copies of all the required documents to your interview. Not having required documents in hard copy can cause delays or even lead to a denial if the officer can’t review all needed information during the interview.

📁 Make sure your photos meet French government regulations and requirements. It’s best to have them taken at a professional photo studio or on a government approved app.

📁 Write a cover letter explaining the reasons why you wish to visit/move to France. Outline the documents that you have provided, explaining your accommodation and financial plans in detail. Don’t forget to emphasise how much you love France, the language and its culture.

📁 Be on time for your appointment! Arrive at least 30 minutes before to allow yourself time to pass through any security checks or check-in procedures.

📁 Be cooperative and willing to provide any additional information if asked.

📁 Once your interview is finished, be patient while waiting for the consulates decision. Processing times can vary, so stay patient and avoid unnecessary follow-ups. Track your application online if the option is available, and wait for official communication.

Here are our 5 steps to help you register your small business in France :

💼 Declare your business on the Guichet Unique INPI website. Whichever type of business you want to register. Whether you are a sole trader (micro-entrepreneur or enterprise individuelle), or whether you go for a French incorporated business (EURL, SARL, SAS, SASU), this is your point of entry!
💼 Once you have registered your business, you must then create your URSSAF account.
💼 Your application will then be processed by the relevant authorities.
💼 After around 15 working days, you will receive your individual business number or SIRET number.
💼 Once you have this, you can officially open your business and get to work 🥳

🇫🇷 Thinking of escaping to the chateau and owning your own home in France? 🇫🇷

Here’s our step by step guide on what to expect when buying property in France :

🗝️ Choose your budget, research the area and find the property your wish to purchase.
🗝️ Make an offer to the estate agent or landlord.
🗝️ Once your offer has been accepted, sign the Compromis de Vente (Promise to buy contract).
🗝️ You will then have a 10 day cooling off period to back out of the contract (you and the seller) if anyone changes their mind.
🗝️ Search for a mortgage - we would recommend using a mortgage broker.
🗝️ Gather all quotes and planning permission for any works you wish to have done.
🗝️ After the Compromis de Vente has been signed, it takes roughly 2 months for the Notaire (Notary) to process the sale.
🗝️ Sign the Acte de Vente (Act of Sale) document and pick up your keys!

Confused on how to apply for your French social security number (also called NIR) as a non-EU resident?

FYI - You may only apply after three months residency in France.

Here’s our step by step guide :

➕ Find your local CPAM office.
➕ Begin your application, you must provide several documents :
- A completed Cerfa 15763*02 application form (this can be found on the French Gov website)
- A copy of of your passport/ID
- Proof of valid residency in France
- Your birth certificate translated into French
- Proof of stable French residency e.g. a utility bill in your name
- Your RIB (bank account details)
➕ Once you have applied, you will receive a temporary French social security number (be aware that you cannot use your temporary number to create your Ameli account but it can be used for medical reimbursements)
➕Then you wait patiently to receive your permanent social security number, with this, you can then create an online Ameli account and order your Carte Vitale.
