Orchard Eq Ireland News

New Horse Wormer Regulations from 1st December 2025

Dear Customer,

From 1st December 2025, Irish legislation is changing: all horse wormers will become Prescription Only Medicines (POM).
After this date, you will need to send us a prescription from your Veterinary Surgeon to purchase any wormer.

✅ Good news: You will still be able to order from Orchard Equestrian after 1st December: simply email us your prescription, and we will process and dispatch your order as usual.

📦 We strongly recommend stocking up now while prescriptions are not yet required.
You can easily check product expiry dates on our website to help plan your purchase.

⚠️ Please note: Due to expected high demand, dispatch times may be slightly longer in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued trust and support,

The Orchard Equestrian Team

Interesting article.

This is why it’s always advisable to split your horses feed into 3 meals, some feed 4 to 5 per day. Same quantity but it’s following the rule of little but often.

A horse's full intestines can weigh over 100 pounds (45 kg), with the large intestine alone potentially accounting for that entire weight when full of feed.

The total weight depends on the horse's size and what it has recently consumed.
Key components of the equine digestive tract include:
Total capacity: The entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract of a fed, mature horse can hold nearly 50 gallons (190 liters) of fluid and feed.
Hindgut weight: The hindgut (cecum and colon) accounts for approximately 64% of the empty weight of the GI tract. This is the area where fiber fermentation occurs.
Large intestine capacity: The large intestine is a significant contributor to the total weight of the full intestines.
It can hold 80 liters (21 gallons) or more of food and water.
When filled with feed, it can weigh up to 100 pounds (45 kg).
Cecum capacity: The cecum, a comma-shaped organ on the right side of the abdomen, can hold up to 30 liters (about 8 gallons) of food and water.

Another thing to consider in our horses is that the small intestines is suspended via the mesentry to the vertebral column of the lumbar. The lumbar is one of the last places to mature in horses and is susceptible to problems. Lumbar pain is a common site of dysfunction in horses I see for several reasons…..

About

I was born in Ireland and was riding my first pony at the age of 4 yrs old. My Mother had horses and we were lucky enough to live in the country side with lots of acres. After leaving school I went to train at Lady Brookeborough’s Equestrian Centre at Ashbrooke and took my BHSAI. My first job was in Maryland USA, hunting 3 days a week, helping my employer - who as a child had contracted polio - to continue her passion for riding. She successfully went on to enjoy many happy hunting days riding side saddle.

I have experience in horse nutrition and am happy to help with feed programs to help run a happy yard.

I worked for Badminton Horse Feeds for over 18 yrs - since sold and bought by Baileys. I also worked for the Austrialian owned Stance Equine, producers of the very successful Coolstance. My claim to fame being my 2 T/B’s were the first horses in the world to do the palatabilty test on the now highly successful Speedibeet. The company, who at that time owned Badminton , had a division called Trident Feeds - producers of all UK Sugar Beet. They then sold Speedi Beet to the company that were doing the micronising - probably something they have regretted to this day!

I am delighted to now be fulfulling my dream of having my own feed store, just outside Bussiere Poitevine, trading since 2017
