I DEVELOPED A BAD HABIT as a very young reader that I still practice today. When the suspense of a story gets to be too much for me to handle, I skip to the last chapter and read just enough to assure myself that everything works out OK in the end. Of course, this practice drives everyone crazy, except me. But my nerves can’t handle the tension of a well-written suspense scene unless I have the promise of a happy ending.

When the earth began to shake and the angel appeared at the tomb of the resurrected Christ, the rough, tough guards passed out from fear. And yet, the women who had come looking for their Lord, while no doubt scared, as the angel acknowledged, weren’t fainting in shock or paralyzed with fear. They had walked with Jesus. They’d sat at His feet. They witnessed Him perform miracles. And though the situation looked bleak on that Saturday, sandwiched between the horror of His Crucifixion and the unrealized glory of what would happen on Sunday, Jesus had shown them enough of the story’s ending that those women could face whatever happened next. Little did they know, they were about to experience the happiest ending of all time. —SUSAN DOWNS

Walking with God

Did the people in Scripture who ‘walked with God’ ever stumble? They did. Did they get off track sometimes? Yes. But when their feet hit the floor every morning, their commitment was to walk with God throughout the day. They drew on His strength, endeavoured to do His will, and aimed towards the goal that He had set for them. Paul writes, ‘I…beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called’ (Ephesians 4:1 NKJV). That means you must know the direction God is leading you in and stay in step with Him. When He acts – you act. When He pauses – you pause. As a believer, your life shouldn’t be compartmentalised into what’s sacred and what’s secular. The Bible says, ‘In him we live, and move, and have our being’ (Acts 17:28 KJV). You can’t say, ‘In this situation, I’m operating under my own steam, but in that situation, I’m operating according to the Holy Spirit within me.’ The Holy Spirit doesn’t come and go from your life; He is always with you! Here is a Scripture you need to think about: ‘Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created’ (Revelation 4:11 KJV). What an awesome thought: you were created to bring pleasure to God! So, one of the most important questions you can ask yourself – and frequently – is, ‘Lord, are my ways pleasing to you right now?’ (see Proverbs 13:5-6). When they are, you will discover that the direction He takes you in is always the right direction; His timing is always the right timing, and the results you get are always the right results

One of the most convincing proofs that the Bible is truly the Word of God lies in the number of prophecies fulfilled during the life of Christ. Daniel prophesied the coming of the one and only Jewish Messiah prior to the temple’s demise. The Old Testament prophets declared He would be born in Bethlehem (see Micah 5:2) to a virgin (see Isaiah 7:14), be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver (see Zechariah 11:12-13), die by crucifixion (see Psalm 22), and be buried in a rich man’s tomb (see Isaiah 53:9). Jesus Himself predicted He would be crucified and rise bodily from the dead three days later. ‘The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken’ (John 2:18-22 NIV). Napoleon Bonaparte said: ‘I know men, and I tell you that Jesus Christ is no mere man. Between him and every other person in the world there is no possible term of comparison. Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne and I have founded empires. But on what did we rest the creations of our genius? Upon force. How to enrich and strengthen your relationships

‘‘But the fruit of the Spirit is…’’
Galatians 5:22 NKJV

You can enrich and strengthen any relationship by developing and demonstrating the fruit of the Spirit. The Bible speaks about being filled with the Spirit (see Ephesians 5:18) and walking in the Spirit (see Galatians 5:16 AMPC). To be ‘filled’ with God’s Spirit means you’re a receptacle, whereas ‘walking’ in the Spirit means you’re a dispenser – a vessel God can fill and pour out into the lives of others.

‘What’s this “fruit” you’re talking about?’ you ask. The Bible describes it this way: ‘The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control’ (Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV).

Look carefully at these nine different character qualities. The first three – ‘love, joy, peace’ – are atmosphere-changing fruits. As you yield to the Holy Spirit, He will throw a wet blanket on the unkind words you may want to say. He will build a fire in your heart that will bring warmth to a cold atmosphere and love to a bitter, revengeful atmosphere.

The next three fruits – ‘longsuffering, kindness, goodness’ – are attitude-changing fruits. Each of us has the potential to have a bad attitude. God sometimes lets us go through difficult situations to reveal what’s really inside us. When we see our own helplessness, weakness, and despair, it causes us to cry out, ‘God, I need you!’

The last three fruits – ‘faithfulness, gentleness, self-control’ – are attribute-changing fruits. Through the Holy Spirit, you have strength and ability that you can’t attribute to anyone but God. And you have peace that transcends human understanding (see Philippians 4:7).

“HOW’S YOUR MOM DOING AFTER her gallbladder surgery?” I asked the grocery store cashier.

“Recovering well,” she replied. “We appreciate your prayers.”

I was about to say more when my daughter Melissa elbowed me in the ribs—my signal to stop talking and move on.

“Mom, didn’t you see the line behind you?” Melissa scolded as we left the store. Over the years, my kids have voiced their annoyance and embarrassment about me chitchatting with most everyone I meet. I like people and am interested in their lives, but Melissa thinks it’s inappropriate and nosy.

At my devotional time the next morning, I consulted the One I knew would be honest with me. Jesus, do I talk too much? Am I being nosy?

For the next several days, I practiced silence. I simply thanked the cashiers when they rang my purchases. I refrained from telling the mother pushing the stroller how cute her baby was. I even talked less around the house. My husband, Jeff, asked me if I was sick!

At a department store as I searched the shelves for my size, a clerk came up to me, a huge smile on her face. She reminded me I’d promised to pray for her daughter, who was experiencing a high-risk pregnancy. And I had.

“My grandson was born yesterday, and he and my daughter are fine,” she said. Then she gave me a hug and thanked me for praying for her family. And I thanked Jesus for showing me it’s OK to be chatty. —PAT BUTLER DYSON

THE BIBLE STORY ABOUT THE loaves and fishes fascinates me. To witness Jesus feeding the multitudes with just a young boy’s lunch must have been life-changing. Did the food replenish itself in the baskets as they were passed or in the recipient’s very hands? I can only guess at the awed expressions as the crowd received this divine gift. Each of those people, stomachs filled, passed the blessing along. Not one clasped the basket tight in his grip, unwilling to share. Afterward, the twelve gathered the remnants, so as not to waste a bit.

Today, my refrigerator and pantry are so empty they nearly echo. Yet as I rifled through veggie compartments and canned goods, I discovered enough ingredients to prepare a tasty “from scratch” pasta sauce. But who ever heard of a tiny pot of spaghetti? I’ll share this dish with my neighbors. Come summer, I’ll find bags of juicy pears on my porch, just waiting to be bitten into. Or perhaps, an invitation to dinner.

Like most of us, I receive everyday miracles made no less remarkable by their common nature. When I give, I will receive—from Him directly or through others’ actions. Not just a belly full of food but a heart full of trust. Because even the fragments of everyday miracles are precious. They were touched by His hand, and in Him nothing is ever wasted. —HEIDI GAUL

She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. Luke 10:39 (NIV)
I MET A LOVELY WOMAN the other day. Debbi is the owner of a Christian retail store and spends long days doing all the work by herself. Thinking about all the tasks on her list, I asked if she were more like busy Martha or serene Mary, the sisters who visited with Jesus in Luke 10. Debbi said she’s definitely a Martha. Yet, the minute she goes home and takes off her shoes, she’s a Mary through and through. She may have to keep her shoes on for a few hours when she gets home, tackling whatever tasks are waiting for her there. But the minute she slips off whatever’s on her feet, she declares her tasks done and clicks over to a stance of Sabbath rest to be restored by Jesus.

Her concept had a profound impact on me. I began to wonder what triggers I have that are like Debbi’s shoes. What action or items do I equate with sacred time with Him? When I sit in my prayer chair each morning, I feel an automatic connection with Jesus. Like exercise is to muscle memory, my time in that chair creates a spiritual reflex connecting me directly to Him. But I lack an evening ritual that signals it’s time to rejuvenate in Jesus again.

Rest assured, I’m experimenting with my own taking-off-my-shoes trigger that signals it’s time to be restored at His feet. —CLAIRE MCGARRY

Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. John 12:37 (NIV).

“WILL YOU HELP ME UPDATE my résumé?” my daughter asked. She had completed her first year in an entry-level position and was ready for her next career step. The one-page résumé she had prepared right out of college had a lot of white space, listing basic skills, part-time jobs, and no work history in her career field.

She updated her employment information and added new skills to the résumé. She briefly described major projects she’d completed and the computer programs she’d mastered. Very quickly, the white space disappeared as she presented evidence to convince a future employer that she was qualified for the job she desired.

I wonder how often Jesus has to convince me He is qualified for the job. Remember that time you prayed for direction? Or when you asked Me to walk with you through that illness? What about the relationship I healed? That time the finances came through? Or when you needed to be rescued? Perhaps I’m too focused on the problem in front of me to look back at Jesus’s history and qualifications. Sometimes, in spite of my Savior’s impressive résumé, I doubt He can or will do the job. Or I foolishly think I can do it better myself.

When I shift my eyes onto Jesus and consider the work He has done for me and in me, I have no doubt He is the only one qualified, if not overqualified, to fulfill every need I will ever have. —KAREN SARGENT

Indeed, we all make many mistakes. James 3:2 (NLT)
IT HAD BEEN A SOMEWHAT restless night as I anxiously anticipated leading my church’s morning prayer call, which attracts hundreds of people from around the country. It would be the first time for me to have that awesome responsibility.

Leading the call involved muting and unmuting participants and, most importantly, recording the call so that those who couldn’t join us would have the opportunity to listen to the prayer later. I was a little nervous about remembering to do everything at the proper time, so I made a cheat sheet with the various codes to use for each call function. I prayed before I opened the phone line, asking the Lord to guide me and let everything go smoothly.

I started the call by greeting everyone. I shared a short scripture reading and began to pray. The words flowed and the time passed before I knew it. I ended with “Amen,” relieved that everything had gone well. And then the big revelation came: I hadn’t recorded the call! I was mortified. And I was angry at myself for making such a silly mistake.

As I began to beat myself up over the error, a text came in from a friend. “Beautiful prayer; thanks so much!” I thanked her and admitted I’d forgotten to record the call. “You’ll remember next time,” was the simple and much appreciated reply.

I thought about what happened and decided that Jesus wanted to teach me a lesson. Mistakes happen even with the best-laid plans and cheat sheets. They keep me humble and dependent on Him. —BARBRANDA LUMPKINS WALLS

TAKING A POTTERY CLASS IS on my retirement list of fun things to do, so when my daughter enrolled in a pottery class where she lived, I was jealous in the best way. We were both excited, until the first evening.

The clay was difficult to mold. She added water and worked it with her hands, but by the end of class, she’d produced only one unsatisfactory piece compared to several lovely pieces each of the other students had created. She accepted the instructor’s offer to come to the studio on Saturday to practice.

That’s when the instructor discovered the problem. “This is bad clay,” he said and gave her a new bag. When she placed a ball on the wheel and began spinning, the clay was pliable and obedient. She texted me a picture of her first successful piece—a ceramic bowl.

Although I wasn’t in the class, I learned clay can be bad. I thought clay was clay, and if a project didn’t turn out, the potter’s skill was to blame. My daughter’s instructor tossed aside that rebellious lump that failed her.

I’m so thankful the Master doesn’t give up on bad clay! Sometimes I refuse to be shaped, or I try to take on a form of my own. But Jesus doesn’t throw me away. He patiently continues shaping me, smoothing my cracks, refusing to give up on His work in progress, molding me as He sees best. —KAREN SARGENT

Sometimes, even though you have everything you want, vague dissatisfaction can diminish your happiness. When you feel unhappy, try saying the verse above a few times. Imagine how Jesus looked when He said these words: the kindness, the understanding, and peace on His face. Picture yourself receiving the water of life and fill your heart with the satisfying grace of God's love.

Bible expositor Eugene Peterson, author of The Message, says: ‘The words printed on the pages of my Bible give witness to the living and active revelation of the God of creation and salvation, the God of love who became the Word made flesh in Jesus, and I had better not forget it. If in my Bible reading I lose touch with this livingness, if I fail to listen to this living Jesus, submit to His sovereignty and respond to His love, I become arrogant in my knowing and impersonal in my behaviour. An enormous amount of damage is done in the name of Christian living by bad Bible reading. Caveat lector, “let the reader beware.”’ It’s not enough to read God’s Word daily, you must practise its principles consistently. The psalmist writes: ‘Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies…I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word. It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies…I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I keep Your precepts. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, that I may keep Your word. I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’ (Psalm 119:97-105 NKJV). Day 20
Draw from God's Love
In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
—Romans 8:37

No matter what happens, nothing can separate you from God’s love and protection. The secret is to build up your spirit, day by day, with the knowledge and realization of God’s presence and His love for you. Dwell on this until it becomes an unshakeable fact, the most important part of who you are.

Lord, work in me to change my emotions. I ask for Your peace to guard my heart and mind in Jesus' name Amen

Let Go of the Past

Every night when you lie down to sleep, let go of everything that has happened. Release the day into the past. It is over, finished. Look confidently to the future with God. Ask God to fill you with His perfect peace.
