So true for the welfare of our horses…
Why are entities always quicker in putting out sanctions rather than pro-actively working for making our sport progress, be better, cutting-edge.
If a regular business, let’s say a hotel, is at the top at it’s opening, and is not actively held at that level by the service provided, the facilities, the customers experience, they simply finish by either falling down the ladder of excellence or fail as a business…
Same mindset should be applied to sports: work everyday to stay at the top of horses welfare, rider’s equity, public’s involvement, without forgetting that NO event or business can function without the right, professional, implicated people behind.
The same as athletes do cross training, why not get implement by other models which work and progress, it is not a shame to work together…

Equestrian sports have been under huge scrutiny recently, at times fairly and at times dubiously from anonymous keyboard warriors. The public’s perception of our interactions with horses is fully understandable, even for the more educated of us.

Everyone starts somewhere, and without our horses, well we are mere pedestrians.
I wish more riders were able to reframe, not forget where they are at and later on, where they come from.
Horses first, always…
Thank you for having the courage to put it out there at a very mediatized event, despite the pressure and expectations of federations, investors or personal goals and so many more….
On the long term, this is what will bring all the riders further: the care for their horses.
Thank you, hope you inspire many others

Statement from Skylar Wireman on withdrawing Tornado from today’s final round at FEI World Cup Finals:

I have made the very difficult decision to withdraw from the final round of the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup Finals. Tornado, my horse is 100% well, sound and fit and I would like to explain why I have withdrawn. I came here knowing this would be an incredible learning experience and hoped to be competitive. I am at the start of what I want to be a long and successful career as a jumping athlete and to compete against the very best in the world has been an honor, and I have learned so much. I hope I have proven that I deserved to be here and that I will give my all to jumping clear rounds and being a winner. While I want to ride every round and grow my experience level, I care deeply about my horses. I love Tornado more than anything.

I came here with a horse that is 10 and is very much still learning and his welfare will always be at the very heart of every decision I make. Without our horse we are nothing, and they put their complete trust in us. Tornado was a rock star in the 1st Round of the World Cup Finals finishing 10th amongst the legends of our sport. He jumped his heart out in the 2nd Round on Thursday. Tornado is inexperienced at this level and having studied our round on Thursday and talked extensively to my coach and many others whose opinions and experience I have high regard for, I will not risk his welfare or his future in the sport by asking Tornado to jump a course he might not be quite ready for. The course today will be big and technical but fair for this level of competition: I knew it would be but I knew Tornado and I had the potential to jump it; that potential is still there but we need just a little more experience to realize it.

I am so grateful to those that have supported Tornado, to my family Shayne Berridge-Wireman , my groom Alicia Marie, my coach Peter Wylde and the USEF who have put a warm blanket of support around all of us here in Riyadh. I look forward to representing the team in the future!

Retired top jockey Robert “Choc” Thornton and farrier Aron Tyler partnered with manufacturer Öllöv to create a vulcanized rubber racing plate, with an aluminium core. The Equishox shoe, designed with racehorses’ welfare in mind, has caught people’s attention.

saddlefit4life Why is it so important for horses to carry the rider with an engaged core and « lifted » back?
Nature did not intend for horses to be ridden. The equine back is not built to sustain the weight of a rider naturally.
Lucky for us, equine biomechanics - and the fact that horses are incredibly intelligent and trainable - allows us to develop the equine back to carry a rider without causing detrimental musculoskeletal damage. Unlucky for the horse, many riders lack the knowledge or skill to ride horses in this position and/ or to identify saddle fit issues, preventing the horse from lifting the back, resorting to gadgets forcing a horse into « collection ».
The result is a heart breaking prevalence of back pain in ridden horses and a rise in conditions such as kissing spine.
Kissing Spine, clinically referred to as impinging spinous processes (ISP), is a complex condition with multiple etiologies, characterized by impingement and overriding of spinous processes. Recognizing that research indicates a genetic predisposition to the ailment, tack fit and riding style play a significant role in the development and progression of the condition.
Both horses and humans possess parasympathetic, non-consciously controllable reflex points. These reflexes, when triggered, elicit subconscious muscle reaction. The equine spinal column has nerve endings protruding between each vertebra, with about five of them being actual reflex points.

An ill-fitting saddle, too long, too tight in the gullet channel, or with an incorrect tree angle/ width, will cause the horse to reflexively lower its back, in an attempt to escape the pressure and discomfort. Many riders obsess with the horse’s head carriage, resorting to detrimental gadgets to force the horse into the desired outline. The use of gadgets ignores equine biomechanics entirely. Yes, the horse’s head lowers IN RESPONSE to an active hind end, engaged core and lifted back. However, forcibly lowering the horse’s head does not raise the back!!
A horse that consistently assumes this position under saddle, will experience back pain, putting him at an elevated risk of developing ‘kissing spine!
