Animals do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.
Dogs have slower comprehension so it takes some time for them to process and understand what we humans are saying. And uses the sense of smell to remember the word for each button.

Tips when walking your dog off lead.
Regular automatic check-ins - your dog should stay close and keep glancing back toward you by paying close attention to her.
Always leash your dog especially if you live in a busy city. This is not to encourage you to off-leash your dog.
Nikkou learned to walk off the lead when we used to live in Singapore. Though Singapore is not a pet-friendly country in general, there is no way you can walk your dog off-lead in public places or take public transportation with your dog. I was lucky to live in a dog-friendly neighborhood where I get to socialize my scared and insecure pup with other well-mannered dogs and of course friendly owners. It was a daily routine after work until she learned all the basic commands and and started trusting her to walk off the lead but only in our neighborhood park. Coming to France is a different story, most dogs are often off-lead even in public places, dogs and their owners are friendly. I walk her off the lead with extra caution and I make sure both on-leash and off-leash are positive experiences. She does not complain when I put the lead back on.
