Twilight - the retirement home for dogs

Twilight - the retirement home for dogs The Twilight Retirement Home for Dogs is a registered association providing an oasis of love and tranquillity in a family home for old, sick and disabled dogs.

It’s about having the best of life to the very moment of crossing the Rainbow Bridge. Assoc Twilight W242001328

Twilight was established in 2009 and since then has seen more than 300 dogs pass through its gates. It has inspired many people to welcome an old or disabled dog into their life. Nestled in the verdant countryside of the French Perigord Vert, this is the family home of Leeanne and Mich

ael Whitley. They were inspired to create Twilight after losing their elderly dog Kizzy, and needing to find a friend for their remaining happy retriever, Teg. It became evident, searching the pounds and refuges, that if you were an old dog, life was not always so good, and your ending might be premature and/or without dignity. Twilight now provides all that a dog needs to make him or her as well and as comfortable as possible for their remaining days.

Sadly the first of January was a first and last for dear little Linda. She spent the holidays under the fabulous watchful care of Vets Châlus, but her complicated conditions had led to this point, of kidney failure amongst other things. The incident in the Ukrainian war zone that had caused so much internal damage had quietly been eating away at her, and once the main symptoms started to show, it was too late. Dear Linda, what an absolutely gorgeous girly you have been. It has been a privilege and joy to meet you and share, sadly to short, but none the less, our Twilight home of love. We wish you peace as you cross the bridge, and freedom to be the beautiful soul that you are. Thank you for you ###

❤Time to meet darling little Polly Wobble.❤

This little poppit is one of Alison Az Neales pack. It is the least we can do to help one of our own in the rescue world, and we hope deeply that Alison herself if free of pain over the bridge.

Polly apparently suffered neurological damage from a hit to the left side. She has lost her sight in the left eye and is prone to wobble and fall. She has already had some months with her rescue mum Allison and improved so much. We just take over the batten and will endeavour to love and care for little Polly as her mum would have.

She has only been here a few hours, but has met the Twilight family. Ofcourse a little overwhelmed, but has eaten some sausage and is cuddling daddy as I write.

We will let her settle then pop her to the vet for a check over and see what her special needs may be. Welcome beautiful girly, we are deeply sorry for you loss, but we will give you all we have of love and care.

Leeanne's end-of-year review

Sixteen and a half years of Twilight rescuing and here I am sat on New Year’s Eve full of awe of our amazing puds' resilience, sadness that they have to endure before they can shine again, and utter dismay at this deeply sick world on so many levels. We have never been ones for resolutions, but for sure, this coming year we batten down the hatches, light up our candles in our little bubble of a world, and vow to carry on and make only good of what comes in our path.

Twilight is still here thanks to you, so many of you. The fundraising and supporting needs for all rescue is huge. Team Twilight South have had an incredible fundraising year, all the Associations with shops that support us are remarkable, Ark79, Furry Tails, Hope, Hope 79, Hope 87, and Rainbow. Our own online auction Team have shone. Those of you who donate via the bank, or PayPal, monthly. The Teamers that donate €1 a month, now total 55 of you, are fabulous. Those who make items for us to sell, so talented. Then all the volunteers who give their time, week after week, or occasionally, you are all part of our amazing Twilight family. Thank you. All your contributions are humbling.

Lord needs a special mention. You may recall he started the year with his new prosthetic. It seemed a wondrous success and Hope Associations funding allowed Lord to run on four legs again. As the months passed though it was clear the prosthesis had rejected. It was always a possibility. Our wonderful vets at Chalus took on the health needs of Lord and amputated one more time, this time at the shoulder. It has to be said, Lord hasn’t looked back. We are all glad we tried, but for Lord, being a most majestic tripod is his personal solution. He is now in a most precious outreach family and couldn’t be more loved. What a journey our Ukrainian little man has had.

Our humans have had a very difficult year. Six of our volunteers have been extremely poorly at different times of the year. Our love is with them all, you all have shown such courage.

Here at home we have 15 puds still with us who were here a year ago, and 6 puds who join us on New Year’s Eve for the first time, so 21 around our fireplace. We celebrate the lives of 17 puds who have crossed the bridge this year, all to be remembered in a separate post, but dear Taffy, Caesar and Elena and dear little Puss all need a special mention. Outreach has 21 puddings with very special homes, some manage alone, others we help with vet fees or special needs. All are part of the pudding club, which totals in our time just over 460 in total.

My Michael's health is no secret. For this period we keep our numbers at a manageable level. Even as I write though, I know we have just accepted an emergency case, due to the sad sudden death of one of own in the rescue world. We are all on the same side in the rescue community, so important to help each other at such tragic times.

And perhaps as I have waffled enough, it seems appropriate to sign off on that note, in the rescue world we all have one aim and that is to relieve the suffering of animals in need. We only managed to get to Rainbow and Hope events this year. We love meeting up with old friends and meeting newcomers who join all the amazing associations out there. But it isn’t easy, time and energy … and just plain busy.

We are grateful for social media that we can all keep in touch this way. We would personally like to close by congratulating everyone involved in caring for animals. You do an incredible job however you are involved. Be proud. Stay strong, and keep hope alive that we will make a difference to as many animals as we can.

Leeanne & Mike ❤

A pud of the year?

Never thought of it before, but if we were to have one it would go to our dearest Flopsy. She has been with us years. Severely traumatised and so afraid of everything. But now you will see her in photos in the main belly of the house, cuddled up to anyone. What’s more, she sits on the settee and cuddles humans too. It is a beautiful transformation that has taken years to unfold. Time, love and patience…. It costs nothing and achieves everything ###

I've just been doing some updates on the Twilight Puds' album, so you might see some posts about dogs who arrived at Twilight earlier in the year. Don't worry, there hasn't been a sudden influx! Just scroll on by, there's nothing I can do about the order of the posts FB shows you. Thanks, Liz (admin)

Do you recall our wonderful Jean of sausage roll fame? She died a few years ago and her hubby Bill has done so very well. But sadly he lost the will to live on and grew very weak. Sadly the summer heat wave 2024 was too much for his heart, but saying that, he wanted to join his Jean and be free of the aging process that wasn’t being so kind to him.

Ellie, Bill and Jean’s gorgeous pudding, has joined the Twilight family and is now living happily in Outreach. You were there with your daddy when he passed and you sat faithfully with him for a day. Bless you little girl. ###
