HORSEMAN
There are horse trainers, horse traders and horse whisperers. There are show men, show boaters and show offs. There are fast talkers and would be magicians.

But then there are true Horsemen and Horsewomen, and these are harder to find and sometimes even harder to recognize because they are often tucked away in quiet hidden places, working slowly and silently without national recognition or appreciation.

Often times, the true horseman or woman does not have the most horses in training or those horses that are exceptionally bred or high priced. Often times, the true Horsemen and Women do not have access to big money owners or run through dozens and dozens of prospects in order to find the few that can take the pressure of aged event prize money or high profile exhibition. Many times, the true horsemen and women are slow and steady, methodical and patient, training on an individual horse's timeline and not to a rigid show schedule set by the seasons or show management.

These people recognize a horse's physical and mental capabilities and showcase their assets without sacrificing their bodies or minds. Horsemen and women take their time developing their horses' skills and confidence through a traditional steps, one before the next, placing just as much credence in their teaching relationship and equine partnership as they do in show pen results. Horsemen and women are humble because their reward comes from within; from knowing that they have taught through kindness, patience, fortitude, and logic. Their rewards coming from creating a confident horse that works with them and not for them, horses that are not scared or intimidated, horses with solid foundations that last season after season and that carry a gamut of riders from the experienced non pro to the Amateur to the Green Reiner. Always Dedicated. Always Patient. Always Consistent. Whether it be riding young horses, resurrecting older horses, or maintaining the Steady Eddy, a True Horseman is one of the first ones to throw a leg over in the morning and one of the last ones to pull their boots off in the evening.
Horsemen and women are a pleasure to watch in the arena or on the ranch as they diligently and patiently impart their knowledge and logic to both horses and students.

In an era where the horse industry is so economically driven and success is measured primarily in prize money and accolades, the tradition of the true horseman and the process of training horses seems to be changing; giving way to an assembly line mentality where immediate success and financial compensation take precedence over handcrafted quality and longevity. Dedicated to their craft, loyal to their students, ambitious, hardworking and a role model for anyone interested in making their way in an industry dominated by pressure to build great animals in less and less time, old fashioned horsemen are women are now Artisans, assets to our heritage and traditions and harder and harder to find.

A thoughtful teacher, a thorough instructor, a gentle hand, a firm guide, a rational yet fearless showman, the greatest compliment that I think could ever be given to someone who works with horses, is to be thought of as a Horseman.

Doc O’Lena was foaled in 1967, the offspring of Doc Bar and Poco Lena. He is one of only two horses in the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame with both parents also inductees. He was a bay foal owned by Dr. and Mrs. Stephen F. Jensen of Paicines, California.

It is really quite a miracle that Doc O’Lena was ever born at all. The Jensen family bought his dam, the severely foundered Poco Lena, in 1963, with the intention of breeding her to their already proven halter and performance sire, Doc Bar. In addition to an already heart wrenching story behind her laminitis, Poco Lena had suffered long-term effects from the drugs that had kept her from cycling during her cutting career. It took three breeding seasons before she carried a foal. That foal was Doc O’Lena, born June 21, 1967.

The Jensens hoped to sell Doc O’Lena while still a yearling to Don Dodge, who had trained the c**t’s dam, Poco Lena, but Dodge thought the c**t was too small to train as a cutting horse. So instead, the Jensens decided to keep the c**t and have Shorty Freeman of Scottsdale, Arizona, come look at him to see if Freeman wanted to train the c**t. Freeman did not have an auspicious beginning, as the first time Freeman tried to ride the green broke yearling, Doc O’Lena ran away. However, Freeman decided to take Doc O’Lena on, and said of the horse, “I didn’t train Doc O’Lena anyway, he trained himself. I knew about 30 days after I got him that he was an exceptional horse. I always had to ride him last in the training program, ’cause if I didn’t, I’d be mad at all the other horses in the barn. He was just that good.”

Freeman talked one of his clients into going into partnership with him and buying Doc O’Lena from the Jensens in April 1970 for $15,000. That December, Doc O’Lena and Freeman became the first competitors to make a clean sweep of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity’s preliminary go-rounds, semi-finals and finals becoming the 1970 Futurity Champion and winning $17, 357 for his new owners. In all, Doc O’Lena earned $21,991.93 in NCHA earnings, along with an NCHA Certificate of Ability.

Doc O’Lena sired 1,310 foals. Of these, 321 accumulated 3,978.5 points; 87 earned performance Registers of Merit (also nine amateur, three youth); nine earned Superior performance awards; four were world champions; six were youth world champions; six were youth world champions; and four were reserve world champions.

Among Doc O’Lena’s offspring were Tanquery Gin, Shorty Lena, CD Olena, Mr Sun O Lena, Travalena, Sarlett O’LenaDoc Athena, Sugar Olena, Lenas Peppy, Smart LittleLena, and Todaysmyluckyday. His son Montana Doc is a member of the NCHA Hall of Fame. Doc O’Lena was the first NCHA Futurity winner to sire a Futurity winner when Lenaette won the Futurity in 1975. His son Smart Little Lena was the first winner of the NCHA triple crown. And in 1978, Doc O’Lena himself was syndicated for $2.1 million, at that time a record for the cutting horse industry.

Doc O’Lena died on February 27, 1993, at the Phillips Ranch in Frisco, Texas. He was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 1997.

Voilà les deux futures poulinières de Esprit Quarter Horse, elles étaient attendues et je suis allé les chercher depuis peu…
Elles ont voyagé comme des grandes habituées mais ce n’était que le premier chargement, déplacement , changement d’environnement… Elles ont juste un mental exceptionnel…. Et je tiens à souligner ici la base de l’éducation…
Elles sont déjà devenues des pouliches intégrées dans le troupeau…
Merci à leurs éleveuses respectives Melanie TENARD en Hte Saône ( GAEC DU CABRY) et Francoise RAIMONDO dans le Jura ( RED SPRING RANCH) pour leur confiance…

Un À/R en Hte Saône hier, accueillit très chaleureusement chez Mélanie Tenard. J’ai vu de très beaux chevaux, et surtout Lara Croft….. Une superbe tête, une belle morphologie et surtout une robe incroyable….Une des futures poulinières chez « ESPRIT QUARTER HORSE »… Il faudra patienter encore un peu. Elle intègrera le groupe des poulains en cette fin de mois d’Avril…Merci à toi Mélanie pour ton accueil, ta gentillesse et ta confiance….

Bonjour à tous,
De bonnes nlles sont venues égayer mon début de semaine, et toi Jeff , que nombre d’entres vous connaissent, tu y es pour beaucoup. Nos échanges ces dernières années, notre vision de l’élevage et des choix sur des lignées qui nous sont chères et qui nous tiennent à cœur ont permis que tu me choisisses moi, que tu m’accordes ta confiance pour celles que tu appelles amoureusement « mes deux filles ».
Donc mère et fille vont venir intégrer mon cheptel et mon programme d’élevage… Sur le plateau de La Margeride ( la bête du Gévaudan), Hte Loire à 940 m d’altitude….Elles ne seront pas très loin de chez toi et tu seras tjrs le bienvenu…
Des lignées de champions reconnues à travers le monde MAIS surtout d’incroyables lignées de ranch…. Des vraies lignées de travail…. Alors OUI Jeff, je sais que tu as fais le bon choix, un choix du cœur aussi mais qui rejoint surtout ce que tu as dans la tête pour l’elevage du Quarter de ranch…
Alors je te remercie du fond du cœur, UN GRAND MERCI À TOI…..
Courage pour la suite Jeff, je connais ce que tu ressens pour l’avoir vécu il y a quelques années, faire ce choix d’arrêter, quelles qu’en soient les raisons est douloureux à vivre et laisse des traces indélébiles ….

❤️🐴HOW MUCH FOR A FOAL?🐴❤️

Let me say a few words to you, yes you, the person who sends a text to just ask for the price. The person who calls and hears the price and says “I can buy a cheaper foal somewhere else”. I'll talk to you too; the person who doesn't care about papers because I want “just a pet and trail horse to raise”.

No foal is “just a pet and trail horse”.

Behind every purebred foal is a BREEDER. I use capital letters to distinguish a breeder from an animal factory for lack of a better word. A serious breeder does not breed foals without documents that protect the integrity of the breed.

Registration papers are records of ancestry documenting the bloodline and enabling you to investigate possible health problems in your lineage.

When you tell a breeder you don't care about the papers, just tell them you don't care about the foal’s health, you just want the cheapest thing you can find!

If you choose to buy a foal from a reputable and quality breeder, this breeder is responsible for every foal’s health.

This breeder will skip vacations, miss sleep, and most of their personal time is dedicated to their horses and their well being. The truly passionate breeder, who loves what they breed, puts all of their time into it. Not only for foals that are sold, but also for every customer who owns a piece of their heart and is now a member of their large family. Breeders worry about their babies after leaving and will take them back without question.

A breeder will get his hands dirty, often covered in everything that comes with birth. Because that's what life is all about... in the midst of birth and death is life. The wheel that keeps spinning. A breeder conducts ultrasounds, analytics, emergency vet calls, vaccinations, registrations, researches pedigrees, deworming, hoof trims and provides the base start for the future of the foal in handling, trailering and bathing.

Last but not least, a breeder CHOOSES the family who is lucky enough to have one of their foals. Yes, you read correctly.

A real breeder chooses who they sell to.
There really is no compensation that can offset the investment a breeder has made.
A good breeder has other criteria for those who want to continue their bloodline, why? Because breeding isn't a responsibility to take lightly, it's a lifestyle choice reserved ONLY for the few devoted people willing to sacrifice.

Since a foal is never “just a pet” he/she is the legacy of the breeder, a little boy’s best friend, a caretaker of a little girl, therapy for the elderly, a member of the family, someone's whole world!

Worth sharing with so much truth in this article. Responsible breeding and possession of several horses is a lifestyle and commitment many cannot understand.

Je suis née en 1962, j’ai grandi à Ste Foy Les Lyon (Rhône) avec mes copains et mes copines (des gens extraordinaires) on traitait tout le monde comme la famille. On allait jouer dehors, on était toujours content et on mangeait ce que notre maman se donnait la peine de cuisiner.
On goûtait avec une tranche de pain, du beurre, du chocolat en poudre ; on partageait nos gâteaux et nos bonbons quand nous en avions, ça nous coûtait 1 franc (15 centimes €).
Quand on avait fini de goûter, on faisait nos devoirs et ensuite on allait jouer.
On pouvait rester toute une journée à la fête foraine avec des gens formidables avec 20 francs (3€) et parfois moins...
On jouait aux petites voitures, aux billes, à la balançoire, à 1 2 3 soleil, cache-cache, aux balles au prisonnier, on voulait construire une maison avec des planches, on grimpait aux arbres etc...
On faisait un mont avec les feuilles de l'automne pour sauter dedans, sans penser aux microbes. On pouvait faire un tour du quartier sans inquiétude. On ramassait des p'tits fruits, on aidait à la maison, on se baladait à vélo sur le trottoir sans casque ni protège-genoux. On faisait du patin à roulette et c'était pas facile.
Pour appeler nos copains et nos copines pour jouer, on allait chez eux on sonnait à la porte ou pas.
Le soir après notre bain, on mettait notre pyjama et nos pantoufles et au plus t**d 20h30 on était au lit et sans discuter. On était content si on avait réussi à grappiller jusqu'au moment de la météo parce que c'est tout ce qui comptait pour nous, savoir si on pourrait jouer dehors demain. Pas de réseaux sociaux, pas de smartphone et on n'aurait pas su quoi en faire puisqu'on avait des copains et un ballon .
On n'avait peur de rien. Tout le monde connaissait les enfants des autres et pouvait lui dire "Attends que je vois tes parents si tu n'es pas sage !", personne ne se faisait la gu**le pour ça parce qu'on pouvait compter les uns sur les autres.
On nous a appris le "RESPECT" des autres. Étant enfant, tu n'avais pas à interrompre un adulte qui parlait !
Ce n'est pas avec des armes que nous réglions une altercation, une dispute.
À la tombée de la nuit, on savait qu'il était temps de rentrer à la maison.
On aimait aller à l'école parce qu'on nous avait appris à respecter les enseignants et c'était un plaisir de voir chaque jour nos copains et nos copines de classe.
On fermait nos bouches face à nos aînés parce qu'on savait que si on leur manquait de respect, on avait juste ce qu'on méritait… La pire des punitions était : "tu n'iras pas jouer dehors".
On devrait plus souvent repenser à tout ces moments heureux, parce qu'on est en train de se perdre dans une société où il n'y a plus de respect, ni autorité, ni compassion, ni bienveillance pour les autres. Le bon sens se perd également, de même que la notion du bien ou du mal.
Fais un "copier/coller" en inscrivant l'année de ta naissance et l'endroit où tu as grandi et n'oublies jamais d'où tu viens..
