If you’ve followed my journey over the years, you already know my penchant for weaving fantasy and imagination into the real-life games we play with dogs. And if you watched my Doggo or Dragon PPG webinar last year, you’re probably not surprised that I’ve created a virtual realm where we re.imagine the stories we tell of how we live and learn with doggos.
To take part in this new adventure, please come and join "Doggo or Dragon" on Patreon. It’s FREE to play :) https://www.patreon.com/doggoordragon
🐶🎂 Do you celebrate your dog’s birthday? Maybe they get a special treat or a new toy? Well, how about throwing them a proper party and playing their favorite games?
For her 1st birthday, Ugenie wanted an experience to remember. So she invited her best friends and went on an epic adventure. These four intrepid FUNdogs had a fun-filled morning hunting for magical yellow orbs, sniffing out sneaky traps and saving the friendly dragon imprisoned in the wonky castle. Snackos were enjoyed all around and much fun was had by all! ❤🐾🥎🍪🐲🦸♀️🐾❤

The longer I am a dog trainer, the less I find myself advocating for what we typically call dog training. I mean, sure, I appreciate a snappy sit and a tight heel. But that’s an elective. You don’t need it.
There’s this idea of “basic training”: sit, stay, come.
But you know what? You’ve been duped; those are not the foundations you need.
We had a a very scary health emergency with Tiffany, the youngest dog in our family, recently. Within hours she had to be hospitalized, endure invasive exams, and stay in a crate for several nights with a drip attached to her paw, while wearing a muzzle and a cone so she wouldn’t rip out the catheter. Now she needs to take medication multiple times a day which includes various kinds of eye drops. Because the eye drops dilate her eyes and make her very sensitive to light, she has to wear sunglasses when she goes out during the day. She also needs to rest and can’t play or go for walks like she usually does.
All throughout this ordeal, she was cooperative and patient.
Did she need to know how to sit, stay, or come when called to help us through this?
Not once.
Yet we relied on so many foundational skills I am glad I taught her BEFORE we needed them.
Tiffany has learned how to
- tolerate being manipulated
- accept restraint and confinement
- stay by herself
- take a pill
- opt in for cooperative medical care
- wear a muzzle
- learn new behaviors with optimism, like putting on glasses
- settle on a mat
- use puzzle toys
- play brain games
If you have a puppy or an adult dog who is lacking these skills, teach them before you need it. Obedience is a fancy dog sport. Basic training should be about building trust, confidence, optimism and cooperation.
Reach out if you need help. Chances are, we’ve been through it 😅

Let’s play !

Pourquoi voudrait-on apprendre autrement ?
