What does a relaxed and well socialised dog look like? It is a dog that is equally as happy to interact with others as they are to ignore them! So, how do we achieve this?

Imagine going to the park with your dog as if you were going to the pub with your friends. Unless you are very popular, you wouldn't go around every table in the bar greeting and joking with every stranger in there. You may run into some friends and chat to them or even chat to some strangers at the bar and become friends. But mostly, you'll sit with your group and interact with them.

Interaction and play with their owner is enough for a dog. It also reinforces that you are more interesting than anything else that is happening around you. Yes, interaction with other well behaved dogs is great if the opportunity arises. But, if you go out with your pup looking for other dogs to play with on every walk, you are essentially admitting to them that you are less interesting and they don't need to engage with you.

So remeber, being neutral and teaching them the ability to ignore others in the area and engage with you will create a more relaxed, happy and well socialised dog. 🐕

How do you know you dog is enjoying their play time with another dog? When watching two dogs playing together, it can look quite chaotic. Despite this, there is a lot of communication going on between them when playing respectfully. The main one being the "play bow" or "freeze-bow-run". The dogs are checking in on each other to make sure they are still both having fun and want to continue. If two dogs have the same energy level they can play together happily. However, you will notice they will still stop and ask this question regularly throughout play. Play bowing can be emulated by us humans as well! Next time you and your dogs are playing, try freezing while looking at them until they copy you, then do a little jump forward. It will be more effective in "zoomie" type playing as opposed to "tug of war". #Dogs #playtime

All those waggly tails, my favourite part of the job 🥰🐶

Problem solving with this girl on Friday 🥰. Searching games activates many of the dogs senses at once. This not only tires them out physically but mentally as well! I may have put the toy a bit high in the tree on this occasion 🤦‍♀️ but as you can see by the wiggly butt, she loves these games and had a blast. As a gun dog, searching is in her nature making this perfect for her physical and mental health 🧠. Top tip! Dogs can't see the colours red and orange as well as us, instead seeing it much closer to green. Using these colours in search games means you can easily find the toy if they get distracted or can't find it but they will use more of their senses while searching as it doesn't stand out so much to them.
