We have been unable to help many animals this year, however we recently took in this elderly boy. Luther’s owner was unable to care for him anymore and he is a bit arthritic, although he’s very curious and determined!
Having lost Sage on Saturday and with Luther finishing his quarantine last week, we started bonding between him and Bobbin. She is also arthritic and hopefully it will give them both a new friend after losing previous partners.
Isn’t he a cutie!

We noticed Nina had started to dribble more out of one side of her mouth and it looked a bit red. She went into the vet today to be sedated so they could look at her mouth thoroughly. Sadly they found a tumour at the back of her mouth and there is nothing they can do for her.
Mouth tumours in cats are usually very aggressive and we have lost others in the past, but the hardest bit about this is, she is only 7-8 years old, not an old cat.
Nina is the sweetest of cats, friendly with other cats, loves people and drools while purring if getting a cuddle.
We have her home on palliative care and will start her on steroids to try and reduce inflammation and hopefully give her more comfortable time, not long the vet thinks because they grow so quickly. We will care for her as long as she is comfortable and let her go when we cannot do that.
Sometimes life is so unfair.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks with us both feeling pretty rotten and having also lost 2 of our long termers in that time.
We sadly lost Emile, one of our grey geese, who came over 10 years ago due to being very aggressive. Rene and Emile were brothers and totally devoted to each other although they hated everybody else. Emile had started to struggle in the mud, and we had taken them into a stable where he seemed to be doing much better, however we sadly found him passed on Wednesday morning. He was a real character and his brother is missing him badly.
Yesterday I noticed Sage, one of our rabbit’s was having breathing difficulties and by the time I got him to the vet, he was struggling badly. He was admitted to be put onto oxygen and given x-rays. He had a tumour in his lung and he had hit a critical point where his body could not cope anymore. I thought Sage was only about 8 but his vet records showed he was over 11 and he had been a happy boy up until yesterday morning. We made the difficult decision to let him go and managed to be there with him.
He arrived here 6.5 years ago with his daughter and grandson after their hutch had been set on fire while living with their previous owners. Their owners feared it would happen again and asked if we could help.
Initially Sage lived with his daughter, Butterbur and when we lost her, he bonded to Bobbin and they were seldom apart.
We will now have to look at bonding Bobbin with a new friend as she will be lost without him.
Rest easy, our 2 grey ones, we will miss your characters as will your respective partners.
It won’t be the same without you.

It’s been a difficult week with us both having a flu, thank goodness for the volunteers.
We have lots of news, so first up is the lovely work done by Callum from Bennachie woodworks, a new venture in building animal shelters. He very kindly did this for cost as a practice run and has done an amazing job.
The donkeys now have a 12 x 12 ft, very sturdy field shelter, rather than trying to squeeze into a small pig house.
Callum was quick ( built in 2 days), efficient and even tidied everything away afterwards.
If you want a shelter for any of your animals, we would certainly recommend him to do the job.
Thank you so much Callum, the donkeys love it!

It’s been a busy week, with a few mishaps.
I had Maggie our 17 year old cat in for a follow up blood pressure check, during which time she bit me on the finger, going through my nail. It’s was ok, other than how painful it is having damage to your index finger. The main thing is her blood pressure was much better so she back in a month for a follow up check.
When mucking out the stables I managed to trip over Ari’s stable door and do a pretty impressive stunt forward roll, even if I say so myself. I was left with a bit of a sore shoulder and a scraped elbow.
Gary the goose’s eye had swollen up after his op and after 2 vet visits which implied it was a haematoma, the vets had to open up the site again as it had become very swollen and painful. He now has a drain to relieve any further build up of pressure and is doing well.
Thank you to Mike and the volunteers this week because, on top of my scrapes, I’ve developed a nasty cold which seems to be moving into my chest, but I’m hopeful I feel better tomorrow. We couldn’t do this without our volunteers.
I have answered some emails and messages so please check your spam if you are looking for a reply.

Halloween dress up day for the Sunday crew, although some volunteers didn’t get the memo because I forgot to tell them.
A good practice run for Christmas though.

Our story

We’re an animal sanctuary just outside Inverurie in Aberdeenshire that gives old, ill or animals at risk a fresh start and a safe home. Animals who come here stay here, we don't rehome.

We are Mike & Louise;

We moved here in 2002 and have steadily increased our flock to a stage where we are now pretty much at capacity. We have always had an interest in animals but had not realised how deep it ran until we moved here.

Over time we came to realise there were many animals with various issues who had nowhere to go so we have become a sanctuary for those animals. They may be struggling to find a home due to behavioural problems, untreatable illness, they are now unwanted or there is just nobody else who can take them. Many of the animals were saved from being put to sleep, or have been dumped, left to fend for themselves.
