Boozy ( the dark ferret) may be elderly and suffer from low grade lymphoma, but he still likes to play with his buddy, Baggins.

We had to get the vet out to Rubic today because he did not eat his breakfast and was starting to run a temperature. He has had anti- inflammatories, antibiotics and an anti spasmodic to help his gut. A bit later he started to pick at some hay and ate some grated carrots. He has antibiotics for the next 2 days and if not improved, we will get the vet out again tomorrow.
We already had a vet call out to Pixie the Shetland pony on Friday due to a respiratory issue, so our vet bill will be a big one this month.
We are very grateful for any help towards looking after the animals, unfortunately due to the type of animal we take in and the fact they are getting older, our vet bills are constantly increasing.

Adelie and Emily as two of our more feral cats, who are very shy but do like each other. They came from different places but have always got on with each other. They are also 2 of the prettiest cats we have.

I wish all the animals were as good at taking their meds as Slinky is, he’s such a good boy.

Our old lady Janet enjoying her breakfast.
Janet is 10, which is old for a big pig and has severe arthritis, she is also prone to constipation.
We have her on horse metacam, but it was not enough, so lately she has also gone onto paracetamol and it has made a huge difference to her. She also gets a small dose of lactulose to keep her regular and this seems to be working well for her. She’s up every morning, waiting for breakfast, which has her lactulose added and 2 bananas cut up with her paracetamol tablets hidden in the flesh.
The things you do for your animals!

We are very grateful that Hedge Buddies have chosen us for a 2nd year to share the proceeds from their calendar.
They are still open for photos until 31st of October, so have a look and if you have any that fit the criteria, send them into the original post.

Slinky is our 10 year old pygmy goat. He is very prone to bloat and his teeth are not great, meaning he struggles to eat hay.
He gets metacam and oil daily to keep the bloat under control and sugar beet, grass nuts and applechaff, soaked, which is easy for him to eat.
We are not sure what is going on with Slinky, the symptoms are very similar to previous goats we’ve had with rumenal tumours, but we don’t really know, either way he is bright and happy, except for really smelly burps!

3 of our special sheep, Ben at the front, has wobbly issues, where he easily gets knocked over. He wasn’t able to cope with the big flock.
Frosty behind Ben, is an older lady who was struggling to keep weight on and Ewen, with the droopy ears and and is blind in one eye, was also not able compete with the big group.
They all get extra feeds of sugar beet and grass nuts soaked and are doing well in their small flock.

With the first storm of the season hitting us tomorrow, please make sure all your animals are safe. Where possible take small furries into the house or garage for the day, make sure your dogs are secure as well as check fencing before putting them into the garden.
Stay safe and make sure your animals are too.
If you need cages give us a shout and we can try and sort out something for you.

A massive thank you to Brian Milton again, who has worked like a Trojan over the last 3 days to sort out the mud bath that is the path around the wee furry portacabins. You can see by the pictures the difference it has made, although it will be fully tested tomorrow with the predicted storm, and that was why he was pushing to get it done, before things were really waterlogged.
We cannot thank him enough, the last few winters have been a real slog, ploughing through the mud with wheelbarrows and losing wellies in it.
We and the volunteers are so delighted.

A quick update on Odette who damaged her right foreleg nearly 2 weeks ago. The vet saw her again on Friday and there was some pus, so she had a change of antibiotic. Another visit today showed there was still some pus but not a lot but there is a lot of swelling.
She has to continue for another week on antibiotics and anti- inflammatories.
Odette is well within herself, using her leg and really angry that she is being contained in a small carrier to try and restrict her movements while she recovers.
Fingers crossed this works and she can join her friends soon.

We had our regular vet visit to check over various animals yesterday, which although were not emergencies, needed a check over.
Samuel and Harry the dogs got meds checks, they need 6 monthly checks for getting their routine medication.
Sam, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel, has been more sleepy and slow lately and was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur. This isn’t a surprise as a huge number of CKC spaniels have heart conditions, so he will be started on vetmedin to see if it helps. Sam also has syringomyelia, which means he is also on metacam and gabapentin.
The vet also checked Odette, the chinchilla, who gashed her right fore leg and sadly it is infected, even though she has been on antibiotics. She has now changed the type and we hope this helps, otherwise she is as feisty as ever and using her leg well.
Moomin the ferret has a sore ear, so initially we need to clean it out and treat for mites. I don’t think cleaning his ear is going to be easy, but we’ll give it a go.
Mason the sheep had the abscess under his jaw lanced, it has pretty much solidified so we just need to keep an eye on it for infection, but he is good.
Tommy the Shetland pony was checked over as he has started on Danilon for the arthritis in his shoulders and he seems to be better with the meds, so we will continue on a low dose for now.
The stray bunny was checked over and apart from being very thin, seems in good health and should do well.
The next visit will be in 5 weeks, to coincide with the farrier trimming Ari and Takin, who need sedation when being done.

Our story

We’re an animal sanctuary just outside Inverurie in Aberdeenshire that gives old, ill or animals at risk a fresh start and a safe home. Animals who come here stay here, we don't rehome.

We are Mike & Louise;

We moved here in 2002 and have steadily increased our flock to a stage where we are now pretty much at capacity. We have always had an interest in animals but had not realised how deep it ran until we moved here.

Over time we came to realise there were many animals with various issues who had nowhere to go so we have become a sanctuary for those animals. They may be struggling to find a home due to behavioural problems, untreatable illness, they are now unwanted or there is just nobody else who can take them. Many of the animals were saved from being put to sleep, or have been dumped, left to fend for themselves.
