We have an amber alert for the next few days here.
It’s going to be bitterly cold so please make sure all your outdoor animals are secure, dry, have plenty of bedding to keep warm and sheltered from the snow and sleet or take them in, if you can.
Keep safe everybody.

An end of year update.
Well we started the year in a state of distress and panic, we thought we would have to close and had no idea what would happen to our animals. We have so many old and ill ones who would be hard to rehome and rescues are pretty much at capacity.
We were stunned by the reaction to our appeal and our go fund me. The response was incredible and so humbling!
We have been so lucky to have April, Janice, Leanne and Megan take over the fundraising for us, something we’ve not really had before and something Mike and I are terrible at. It’s made a huge difference.
We have tried to offer something in return, with our auctions, coffee mornings, photo competitions, stalls and now sponsorship, so we are not always just asking for money.
We have had individuals and companies support us with fundraising, donations, physical help and grants, all helping towards our survival.
Sadly we have had to turn away many animals, whilst losing many of our residents, as we try to make sure we can support those we have in our care.
This year we have taken in a few animals in fairly urgent need, we would have loved to help more but needed to be sensible.
We were caught unawares at the start of last year, and to be honest, were embarrassed to end up in such a situation but the support we have received has been overwhelming.
Our volunteers have been amazing this year, looking after the animals and supporting us at fundraising events, so thank you all.
The animals get so much better care thanks to those who come to clean and care for them them, week after week.
Mike and I have been through the wringer this year, losing so many we have loved, lots of long termers and beloved friends. Many of the animals we have lost, have been here for years, part of our family, leaving their space empty.
This coming year will be no less of a challenge, everybody is struggling, animal rescues are in crisis as many people cannot afford to keep their pets and animals are being dumped because there is no space.
We will do what we can to help, although it depends on our finances and help provided towards caring for the animals here.
In the New Year, we finally hope to get our loaning out of carriers and crates off the ground. We hope this will save people a little bit of money when they have an animal that needs to be transported or contained for vet treatment.
We also have our polytunnel, near to finished, to grow food for the animals and plants to sell at events, while we attempt to offer some small part back to the community who have supported us so wonderfully.
We wish you all a happy new year, thank you for all you have done to help us and we hope we see you this time next year, allowing us to continue to help animals in need.

We are devastated this evening, after having to say a sad farewell to the sweetest of little cats, Nina.
She was diagnosed with a mouth tumour 6 weeks ago and we knew she was on limited time, however she deteriorated quickly over the last few days, not wanting to eat and hiding away. She would still come for cuddles but was not herself otherwise. We made the decision to let her go as we did not want her to be hungry, too sore to eat or be in uncontrolled pain.
Nina arrived 6 years ago, with her sister Wicca, who sadly died due to a severe infection. Nina then bonded to Dolly,an elderly cat who is also a gentle soul, although Nina would snuggle anybody who was willing.
She would drool all down Mike’s shoulder at breakfast time and sit on my lap in the evening, in front of anything I was trying to concentrate on.
She was only 8 years old, it feels so unfair and we will miss her dearly as will Dolly, her best pal.
Sleep easy little girl.

Rosie took this photo of Jigsaw a wee while ago and sent it to me recently.
He’s such a handsome cheeky boy who was going to be PTS for nearly killing another animal. He was an entire Billy at the time and full of hormones. He’s since been castrated and turned into a bit of a spoiled boy.

Bobbin and Luther spent their first night together last night and spent most of it snuggling. Today we moved them into their permanent run and are introducing themselves to Little One, who lives next door.

It was business as usual at Halfpenny yesterday with a vet visit for Moo, our 2 year old hamster. Moo has cushings and has been on medication to help it for over a year, and it’s given as a liquid. We suspect he had inhaled some and developed aspiration pneumonia. Pneumonia can be fatal and small furries can deteriorate very quickly. He is still bright and eating if a bit wheezy and is now on antibiotics. Thankfully he’s a very good boy at taking his meds, so fingers crossed he recovers soon.

It’s Elphie’s last day before he heads off to the North Pole, he discovered he’s not the only Elf at Halfpenny, as the volunteers help keep the sanctuary running all year, working hard at keeping the animals happy and healthy.
I’m sure he hasn’t found any one naughty and they are all nice!
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and that you get what you wish for.
Have a great day tomorrow, everyone.

Our old lady, Maggie was back to have her blood pressure checked and blood tests to ensure her kidneys/ thyroid are not causing or being affected by her condition.
Thankfully her bloods were all good, however her blood pressure is still high, so she needs to go onto another medication on top of the Amodip she is already taking. Fingers crossed that this helps make a difference. We think she is blind and it will not change but hopefully the meds will reduce the risk of kidney disease, heart failure and neurological damage.

A huge thank you to everybody who has sent donations to Halfpenny for Christmas, we are so grateful for every gift given.
Our vet bills have been huge these last few months and feed bills are bigger due to less grass and colder weather meaning higher heating costs and more food to keep the larger animals warm.
Our volunteers have turned out in the worst of weather to help keep the animals clean, fed and watered, thank you.
We are closed on 25th and 26th of December and the 1st of January to volunteers but open as usual the rest of the time.

Elphie welcomed this bunny, an emergency intake because his owner was moving on Friday. He had not been able to find anywhere that could take him so this wee lad was in a desperate situation. We agreed to take him, and he’s a gorgeous little lad, although not sure of Elphie.

Our wee man Walter was in for tests today due to ongoing weight loss. There wasn’t anything very obvious, other than his lower front teeth were a bit long. The vets trimmed them and we must go back in 6-8 weeks to recheck his teeth. Fingers crossed this will help our boy.

Our story

We’re an animal sanctuary just outside Inverurie in Aberdeenshire that gives old, ill or animals at risk a fresh start and a safe home. Animals who come here stay here, we don't rehome.

We are Mike & Louise;

We moved here in 2002 and have steadily increased our flock to a stage where we are now pretty much at capacity. We have always had an interest in animals but had not realised how deep it ran until we moved here.

Over time we came to realise there were many animals with various issues who had nowhere to go so we have become a sanctuary for those animals. They may be struggling to find a home due to behavioural problems, untreatable illness, they are now unwanted or there is just nobody else who can take them. Many of the animals were saved from being put to sleep, or have been dumped, left to fend for themselves.
