Rugging up.

Its that time of year 🥶 I know I’m rugged up 🥶 but does your horse need to be 🤔

It’s always a tough call to make especially if your getting peer pressure from other people on the yard. But remember this is YOUR horse & it’s your call to make.

Individual needs should be considered & to also remember that their core body temperature is not the same as a human. So we can’t compare how cold we are to our horses.

Age of horse
Breed of horse
Medical history
Clipped horses
Body condition

The fur of an unrugged horse stands up in cold weather (Piloerection ) to trap air and keeps them naturally warm. But if your horse is shivering, this is natures way of involuntary contracting of the muscles to produce heat BUT the body movement of shivering can also dissipate the warm trapped air. Harsh winds can also cause the warm air to escape.

We don’t want a hot horse nor a cold wet shivering horse.

A horse only needs fibre because they are & always will be a grass, forage & hind gut fermentor ( read your feed bag labels, if it’s not made from grass, it has no nutritional value for your horse) forage creates energy & warmth. Movement also creates warmth.

So providing hay in the fields ( I understand many livery yards won’t allow this) will also help with their complex digestion system ( think ulcers & hind gut dysbiosis) hay will keep your horse warm due to the hind gut fermentation process of fibre. Digestion produces heat.

Making sure they never go without hay. Use trickle feeder nets/crates to slow them down.

As always do your own research 🙏
