The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training scheme is the largest dog training programme in the UK. The scheme is open to all dogs, young or old, pedigree or crossbreed. Dogs do not need to be registered with The Kennel Club to take part. The scheme promotes responsible dog ownership by teaching owners to train their dog for everyday life situations. There are four award levels: Puppy Foundation, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Abingdon Dog Training Club, (established in 1975) run courses in all four award levels. Stress signals in dogs, like yawning, lip licking, or avoiding eye contact, can indicate they are feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Recognising these signals allows you to address the root of the issue—whether by adjusting the training environment or giving your dog a break—and improve your dog's wellbeing. Addressing these signals promptly can also prevent your dog from feeling the need to escalate to more serious measures, such as growling or biting.

When it comes to dog training, it's important to use rewards that match the effort your dog is putting in. High-value treats (like tiny bits of chicken) for challenging tasks or new tricks, and lower-value rewards (like kibble) for simpler cues or maintenance training. This helps keep your dog motivated and sets them up for success. Happy training!

Why teach it? Well, all dogs need mental stimulation as well as physical exercise. It helps with impulse control and gives them focus. For you and your dog it’s very bonding and builds a great relationship between you. You will learn so much about your dog’s body language as you watch them work.

Many dogs are sensitive to noise and some may develop noise phobias. While each dog is unique, common signs of noise sensitivity include barking, hiding, destructive behavior, fear, panting, pacing and indoor toileting.

There are several ways to help dogs with noise sensitivities, such as gradual exposure to noises, pairing the noise with positive experiences, creating a den or safe haven, closing curtains to muffle sounds, or playing calming music.
