One of the reasons I train using positive reinforcement as much as humanly possible is that the dog's experience is important to me. I want them to feel as relaxed and safe as possible.

If we take care to train thoughtfully and gently that should extend to other aspects of our dogs' lives too. Charlie isn't a huge fan of being touched by people he doesn't know well and noisy things like clippers can worry him so grooming is something he can find a little stressful. We could just push through in order to 'get it done' and ignore what he's telling us but doing so disregards his experience.

Instead his lovely groomer, Louise Thompson at Alba K9 takes the time to make him feel as relaxed and safe as she can. Minimal restraint, gentle touch, breaks when he needs them and lots and lots of positive associations. Louise puts Charlie's experience before her convenience and that is why I recommend Louise unreservedly to all my clients.

When we use coercion or force in one area of our dogs' lives the fallout of that inevitably leaches into other areas. Equally, when we build trust, safety and confidence in one area that benefits other parts of their life.

Today is National Walk Your Dog Day but instead of focusing on the benefits of walking your dog, I'd like to focus, perhaps controversially, on why I believe in rest days free from walks. Consider adding a rest day into your dog's week and enjoy a calmer dog.

All back to normal tomorrow. I have had my second negative test today.

Awaiting PCR result but this is all four of us Matthews'

What this means for the Wanderer......

💟 Wandering
I have to isolate until I have a negative lateral flow on days 6 and 7 unless the PCR comes back negative. Day 7 is Wednesday 5th January which is supposed to be my first day back wandering so providing I have a -ve on Wednesday I will be back Thursday 6th now.
I'm so sorry for this guys.

💟 Training
The Hub was ment to be welcoming a new cohort of furlings for the start of term the week of Monday 3rd January. Unfortunately now this cannot happen.
The Hub will re open on Monday 10th January providing I do have repeated -ve test results.

🐾💜 HAPPY FRIDAY CHRISTMAS PARTY!! 💜🐾

The wanderers took over the sensory room at the hub today. We had lots of fun exploring the noise boxes, cardboard chaos mountain and all the equipment.

Really hope everyone was suitably mentally enriched and are now snoozing ready for an evening with you all. 🌟

Thank you to Mam, Lesley, Sammie and Mel for being extra support to ensure all 13 pups had supervision. And also, thank you for making the hot chocolate 😘😘

Lots of love for the festive period. I hope you all have happy, safe days with your loved ones.

Thank you again for your support over the last year! See my wanderers on the 5th January after a recharge of the batteries. 🤣

Training continues over the festive period guys so the Hub will be open other that the two weekends of christmas and new year.

Videos in two parts for the morning and afternoon groups with a brief look at Todd and the littles on their woodland wander at dinnertime.

The reason the videos are in two parts is because both groups needed resetting and calming as they were getting a little carried away with themselves.

Loose lead practice for Derek who had forgotten how to recall 💁‍♀️😆

And some scatter feeding and calming games to bring Purdey and Dolly down from their heightened arousal play before some sustained stay practice. Real life training for the situation and not in the situation.

Always know how you will guide your dogs through their wanders and be ready for changes and adaptations you may need to make.
