Max graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2015 and after a short stint working in their Weipers Equine centre headed out to Tipperary, Ireland for a yearlong internship. Max then returned to Northumberland in 2016, eventually joining Cheviot Vets in 2021. 🎓🩺🧑‍⚕️

Max then went on to obtain a certificate in advanced Veterinary Practice in 2023 from the university of Liverpool. ⭐️

Max is our only Equine Vet based from our Powburn Branch however he did work as a mixed large animal Vet for 5 years and loves a good calving or caesarean. His main areas of interest are sports horse medicine, poor performance, lameness and dentistry. 🐴🐎🧲

Megan is one of our Small Animal Vets based at our Kelso Branch. She has been with us at Cheviot Vets for a year since graduating from The Royal Dick Vet School of Veterinary Studies in June last year. 🎓🐶🐕

It has been a quick year for Megan and she has enjoyed getting to know all of our lovely clients and their pets. She mostly enjoys consulting as you never know what is going to walk through the door next. Megan finds the best part of her job is the satisfaction after seeing poorly cases back to full health. 🩺👩‍⚕️💕

You may have also met Barley, Megan's cocker spaniel puppy who often takes it upon himself to meet clients in the waiting room at our Kelso Branch! 🐶🐾🧡

Allana has been with us at Cheviot Vets for 3 years. She works in a mixed role, mainly out of the Kelso Branch, with her handsome sidekick Rudi the dog. 🐾🧡🦮

The majority of Allana's work is now mainly Equine based, and she has a particular interest in Equine reproduction (now at the end of a busy stud season). 🐴🐎

Allana loves all aspects of her job, from simple jobs to the complicated ones, endless variety - "it's the spice of life." And she loves getting stuck in the challenging new cases. She also loves being out on the road or having a day in the Practice; meeting and catching up with clients, building new relationships, treating patients who need our help, making the difference. 🙏🩺

" I just adore my job and feel incredibly lucky to work in and travel around the Borders and North Northumberland - it's glorious. It's a tough and demanding job at times, but it's made a whole lot easier with amazing teammates, clients and patients. I wouldn't wish to be anywhere else doing anything else." 💕

Ruth is one of our Small Animal Vets based at our Powburn Branch. After a snap decision on the bus to sixth form one day she decided she'd like to be a Vet, much to the surprise of her Family as she used to be very squeamish. 🐕‍🦺🐱🐶🐈

She graduated from University of Bristol in 2019 and after a brief stint at a Small Animal Practice in Newcastle, joined Cheviot Vets in January 2021. 👩‍🎓🙏

Ruth enjoys the variety that each days brings, but especially loves treating ear infections, stitching up wounds and making particularly comfy beds for her hospital patients. 🪡🩺💉

Sabine and Urs are the owners and directors of Cheviot Vets. Sabine leading the Small Animal team and Urs heading the Large Animal Vets. 💚

Sabine shares her time between both branches, Powburn and Kelso, doing mainly consultations, not to be found so much through the back in Theatre. Having said that, she does enjoy keeping her hands in and skills up in surgery when needed. Sabine likes to 'get her teeth in' to some of the more complex medicine cases, following through, giving owners continuity and re-assurance. 🐶🐈🐕‍🦺🐱

She also runs our busy Booster clinics on monthly Saturdays to take the load off the working weeks and team. 💉

Sabine also works closely with our Practice Manager, Di and Team Manager Powburn, Melissa to run a smooth Practice and successful and happy team. 👏

Urs is mainly found on the road in his truck, all over the Scottish Borders and Northumberland, usually on his phone! 💚

Our farmers like his 'no nonsense' approach, knowledge and pragmatism.... which works on some tricky horses too!! There will be plenty of 'farm words' and banter as well. 🐎🐮🐏🐴

Although not as such specialising in anything, with his vast experience, he will be happy to deal with all things Equine and Farm. 🩺👨‍⚕️🥼

The UK is currently facing a shortage of vaccines to protect against enzootic abortion in ewes (Chlamydia). 🐑

You will recognise the names of these vaccines as Cevac and Enzovax, with both companies unable to meet high demands.

A failure in the batch production during testing of Enzovax means that the expected August 2024 stock cannot be delivered.

Resupply is now not expected until early 2025. 💉

Our Feline friends are to become safer as compulsory microchipping is implemented this year in England, likely followed by Scotland later in the year. 🙌🐈‍⬛

The government has given cat owners until 10th June 2024 to microchip their Cats. 👩‍⚕️💉🩺

The new rules mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks (5 months) and their contact details stored and kept up to date on the microchip database. 🙏

💛 Strangles Awareness Week 💛

Temperature checking shouldn't just be for sick horses. Being tuned into horse health means issues are spotted and treated earlier. 🌡️🤒

Horses with Strangles typically develop fever 2 - 3 days before becoming infectious. 🐴🩺

May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month. 🩺🐾

We are proud to celebrate and thank our AMAZING nurses. They are highly skilled in their clinical work and always strive to further educate themselves, pushing the Nurse-team and the whole Practice to ever better standards. But they are also good listeners, there with advice, a helping hand, wrap your pets up in warm coats and build them cosy beds, whilst always there to support their Vets. 🎀🌷💗

We would be lost without them. 😻💋

💖 Veterinary Receptionist Week 💕

Our super-awesome Receptionists are the friendly voice at the end of the phone and the smiling face when you come into the practice. They love to chat to you and your pet and keep everything in order; juggling phone calls, patients, PetsApp and sales. They're there for you when times are happy but also to comfort on those sad days... and much more. 🫶

And that's only for you! For us, they grab us this and grab us that, bring us coffee and tea, stock our consult rooms, tidy up after us, make calls, find phone numbers, pens, staplers, tape and fix printers... if need be, they even hold your beloved pets. 😻

We could absolutely not do it without them.... So here is a shout out with a BIG THANK YOU to our lovely Carol, Sally and Cath in Powburn and Leigh-Anne and Hannah in Kelso. 🥰❤️😘

Every dog will have a good scratch now and then, but when the scratching, nibbling, licking and chewing become excessive, there might be an underlying problem. 🐶🐾🦴

The most common reasons are parasites, seasonal allergies, food allergies infections or hormonal imbalances. 🤧🌾

Although rarely life-threatening, a constant itch can make your little friend irritable, miserable, withdrawn, restless and in some cases, painful. 😫
