As the time of year is upon us and we start the festive shopping. The awful pet Christmas line is in all the shops... Please don’t get these for your pets this Christmas, as you can see this is rawhide and it has been artificially dyed red and green and glued into different shapes.

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

They regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Please be safe this Christmas and pick a much nicer alternative for your pooches♥️

🐶 Dogs are part of the family and when they're taken it is devastatingly cruel. Our new offence will mean dog thieves face up to 5 years in prison.

These three dogs were stolen from kennels in Spondon yesterday. People are being urged to help make them "too hot to handle" by checking selling sites and spreading news of the theft.
"These aren't just people's dogs," said the kennel owners. "They are people's family members and all the owners involved are absolutely heartbroken." https://bbc.in/3AijF3X

ADDER BITES; DO’S & DON’TS! 🐍

Adders are the only venomous snake in the UK and are most seen from spring to summer in open habitats such as heathland, moorland, and woodland. They are usually grey or brown in colour with a dark distinctive zig-zag pattern down their back. Although they are not aggressive, they will strike when agitated or startled and their venom is incredibly toxic to animals. ☠

Swelling around the bite wound is generally seen within two hours of a bite, and two puncture wounds may be visible within the swelling. You may notice signs of lameness, bleeding, and bruising. Once the venom has been absorbed into the body, a widespread inflammatory response is triggered leading to:
• Lethargy
• Vomiting
• Ataxia
• Fever
• Increased respiratory and heart rate
• Increased salivation

If left untreated, clinical signs can progress to muscle tremors, collapse, coagulopathy (blood clotting problems) and organ failure. Although symptoms are severe, there is a high survival rate if treatment is started promptly. The average recovery is around five days but can take up to one month.

In the first instance of an adder bite, pick the dog up and carry them to inhibit the circulation of venom and head straight to the nearest vet. In the meantime, flush the site with water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. An antihistamine may be administered to relieve symptoms under veterinary direction.

DO NOT use a suction device or attempt to restrict circulation. Adder venom is myolytic meaning it leads to severe muscle necrosis, and pressure devices will therefore increase tissue damage and aid toxin pe*******on. It would also be difficult to achieve suction without shaving the fur, as well as it being incredibly painful for the dog.

If you are walking in an area known to have adders, keep the dog on a lead and stick to footpaths. Adders are legally protected and should not be killed.

APPEAL: Police appeal to find owner of suspected stolen dog

Police are appealing for help in tracing the owner of a suspected stolen dog.

The female Cocker Spaniel, believed to be around five years old, was found during a recent police search at a farm near East Bridgford.

Nottinghamshire Police executed a warrant at the site on 15 April as part of an investigation into stolen vehicles and found the canine living in an abandoned vehicle.

Officers are now seeking to trace the owner of the dog, who has a distinctive tuft of fur on top of her head.

In the meantime she is being cared for at a local kennels and is in good health.

Police are not trying to rehome the dog and urged people to only call if they have information that could help trace the rightful owner.

Chief Inspector Amy Styles-Jones, dog theft lead for Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This dog has been in our care for several weeks now and we have every reason to believe that she is either missing or stolen.

“We are determined to return her to her true home and would like to speak to anyone who may recognise her, acknowledging that she may not be originally from Nottinghamshire.

"Whilst we appreciate support from well-wishers I would urge people not to call the police with offers to rehome the dog as this could tie up our control room resources and we are not looking to rehome her - we simply want to find the rightful owner. So I would ask that people only call us if they have information about who owns the dog.

"Please share this story far and wide across your social media networks and help us to find her rightful owner. Claimants will be asked to provide proof of ownership.”

Anyone with information about this dog is asked to call 101 quoting incident 529 of 6 May.
