This little legend is Dave (Growl) his owners have been working with me to help him make more appropriate decisions when faced with dogs he's unsure of, and unknown people entering his space in certain locations. He is a real heinz 57 mix from Romania, with a significant portion being hound which certainly explains his big bark when letting everyone know how he is feeling. You can also see he has Queen Ann legs which he definitely doesn't let slow him down but can't be dismissed regarding potential discomfort/pain adding to his reactions. Today we met at his usual stomping ground where he often meets friends and we rehearsed all we've been covering over his package and he was so casual and cool about making great choices and did fantastic at generalising his new behaviour in this distracting environment, he's an absolute delight to work with and I'm so proud of all he and his owners have achieved over the time we've been training him. Well Done Davey!! 👏🏼🐾❤️

This handsome boy not only has enormous ears, feet and tongue, but he also has a huge personality to match. Bullet is very much the epitome of a teenage boy, he's super friendly, easily excited and quick to become frustrated when his impulses can't be immediately met. To his family and anyone that knows him he's a soppy loving and boisterous boy but to those passing him on the street with another dog he seems "aggressive" and "unapproachable" due to his frustrated reactivity. This is something I come across frequently with adolescent dogs where much like us, frustration very quickly turns into outbursts and obviously this is heightened when the dog is a larger breed. Bullet and his family have been working hard on his training around walks including teaching him to walk on a loose lead and how to disengage and regulate himself where he would usually fixate and react to passing dogs (who he just wants to meet). He is doing so well and is eager and quick to learn. I look forward to continuing to watch him progress and have him see there is a more appropriate and less stressful way to achieve what you want. Well done Bullet and family for all your hard work so far 😁🐾👏🏼

HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY to us 🐾🥳🥂🍾🎂
That's right!! Amazingly this week my little hobby/passion that I dared to try and turn into a business celebrates helping local dog owners and of course their dogs for 10 years.

From spending all my spare time studying and asking my mum about everything she knew about body language while working as an assistant Groomer for her (big up Groovy Grooming) , to my first official course with the The IMDT who I then went onto qualifying with back in 2015. This then gave me the confidence to set up my first set of classes at the community centre (all of my first customers names I still remember fondly).

From there I have continued my education ever since, I have specialised in offering 1-2-1 packages so I could help my clients to the fullest extent by catering my services to their individual needs. I have built upon my knowledge and handling skills and rescued my own pampered pooch who came with an array of behavioural and now medical issues and therefore taught me so much, not to mention started a family and having the business survive the pandemic.

I have had the up most honour of working with hundreds of not thousands of pups, impulsive teens, traumatized Rescues and every form of behavioural issue going, with a huge variety of different purebred breeds, mixed breeds and size and aged dogs. Not to mention just as many humans who only ever wanted what was best friend!

I've also had the pleasure of befriending other local pet experts and trainers several of which I have helped at the beginning of their own business endeavours with advice and shadowing opportunities as well as working with Dogs for Autism, offering my workshops, social walks and being involved in the creation of Dogs Day Out where I have the pleasure of running my area for the past three years.

This post is completely out of my comfort zone as I am definitely not used to bragging but starting the business and teaching was also out of my comfort zone 10 years ago and I am so proud of all I have managed to achieve because I allowed myself to try.

So a huge thank you to my family and friends for supporting me, my fellow pet business acquaintances for the referrals we give one another and to all my amazing customers and their dogs for reaching out and letting me work with/for them over the past 10 years. I truly am incredibly grateful to get to say I love my job and I hope the next 10 years of business is just as wonderful!!

This giant goofball is Dudley who loves life but is sometimes unaware of his size and being a boisterous boy and a stereotype of big black dog his owners wanted to work on is ability to listen around distractions and have some tools to help him be less of a bulldozer around their other dog as well as fine tune his recall and loose lead walking. He's an absolute delight to train and his personality is even bigger than him. Good boy Dudley di**h**d as his owners affectionately call him 🤣🐾🥰

When I get feedback like this it really cements why I have the best job in the world!
Oakley and his owners have worked so hard from him arriving as a rescue from Spain at 16 weeks old that had separation anxiety and was fearful of many new things. They helped him become relaxed and confident and happy to be left alone. Then when the hormones kicked in during adolescents and they had to double down on recall training and helping him make appropriate decisions when unsure of people and certain situations they continued to rise to the challenge. He is such a wonderful boy who truly landed on all his paws by lucking out with such committed and patient caretakers.
I'm so pleased I could help and get to be updated on his progress. Well done Oakley and family.

I've just received Flokis new harness and lead from Perfect fit and wanted to show them off 🥰
If you've ever asked for harness recommendations from me Perfect fit has always been top of the list due to them doing exactly what the name suggests.
As well as catering to every shape and size dog they also have a wonderful selection of colours and are designed for comfort as well as the back attachment point catering for a dog's natural balancing point which aids with loose lead walking.

Little Maude is coming up 13 weeks old and joined her lovely family just after Christmas. She is spoiled rotten with 3 children that adore her and her adults are determined to give her the best start in life. They have already done a great job of starting socialising as well as basic training, so when we started her VIP PUPPY PACKAGE this week she took to the training so quickly. We also had the bonus of one of her mini trainers being present so she took the lead and had Maude performing all we covered so easily. I really look forward to watching her progress throughout the next few weeks. ❤️🥰🐾

The gorgeous Bella is on her 3rd session of her after joining her new family early December. She is an absolute sweetheart and is adapting incredibly well to her new home in the countryside after previously living in a much busier environment. Before Christmas we taught her to go to bed, got her loose lead walking and built in some strong attention cues among some other basics. Today we introduced some impulse control games to have her "leave" food (she's a very talented meerkat and so has learnt to counter surfing) and how to stay. Her new family is ever so committed to ensuring she is happy and I truly believe both her and them have lucked out in finding one another ❤️🐾😊

Starting 2025 with Indies last session of his behavioural modification package. Indie owners initially reached out after he had had an increase of reactive responses to men in a variety of environments. We figured out that not only is he head shy with people he seems unsafe or unfamiliar but also is wary of people who are more "Novel" be it because of their physical size, how they move or what they are wearing eg. Big, high Vis or hats, walking sticks etc. So we worked on instilling some behaviours and techniques to help him and then went on a Santa hunt at a local garden centre before Christmas followed with a walk through Alton this session, where we were able to rehearse all that had been covered while advocating for his comfort levels and insistence to not be touched by strangers, so he can start to feel less wary. He is so bright and keen to learn and adores his family so I'm hopeful that by adhering to his boundaries while counter conditioning his triggers he will continue to improve and make appropriate choices when not 100% comfortable. Just like us, dogs should be allowed to say no thank you to any interaction that isn't medically necessary, and so please remember, just because you want to touch them doesn't mean you should without their consent!

Wishing all my customers past and present a Happy New year! In 2024 I had the privilege of helping many amazing dogs and their families, I enjoyed some fantastic courses, webinars and conferences to continue expanding my knowledge, we had an amazing second Dogs Day out event and personally my joy for what I am lucky enough to do as a profession has continued to grow. I'm looking forward to finding out what 2025 (which will be A Dog's Beats Friends 10th year in business) will have in stall 🎉🐾🎊🎆🎇

Our Story

The business is ran by Stevie Moss who has diplomas in Canine Training and Behaviour and is a Fully Qualified member of the IMDT (the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers) As well as qualifications via the School of Canine Science among many others.

We are Fully Insured and can offer reliable references. A Dog's Best Friend is based in the Four Marks, Alton area. We offer a range of Group Classes, 1-2-1 training and behaviour modification and home visits. All with each individual situation being catered to accordingly.
