Coco's Brave Journey: Overcoming Spinal Issues at Lumbry Park!
Coco's Brave Journey: Overcoming Spinal Issues at Lumbry Park!
Coco, a 5-year-old Dachshund, faced a sudden challenge – progressive weakness in her back legs and back pain. Having previously recovered well from a similar issue in 2022 at Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists, she returned for expert care.
Expert Diagnosis:
Our neurology team performed a thorough examination and identified the problem: a problem in her thoraco-lumbar spine.
Tailored Treatment:
Coco received advanced imaging (CT scan) for a precise diagnosis which confirmed a herniated disc pushing on and injuring the spinal cord. Our skilled neurologists performed a precise surgery to remove the herniated disc material and create space for her spinal cord. These procedures were performed under general anaesthesia with a personalised plan, including special local pain relief techniques, by our Anaesthesia Specialists, which was maintained and monitored by our dedicated anaesthesia nurses.
Speedy Recovery:
Following surgery, Coco spent two days at the hospital receiving pain relief and supportive care. She recovered well and went home walking with a slight wobble, which is expected to improve over time.
Advanced Care at Lumbry Park:
- This case highlights our commitment to exceptional care for pets like Coco. Our team features:
- Specialist Neurologists: Providing expert diagnosis and treatment plans.
- Advanced Imaging: Utilising CT and MRI for accurate diagnoses.
- Precise Surgery: Offering a less-invasive approach for faster recovery.
- Multidisciplinary Care: Combining the expertise of Specialist neurologists, Specialist anaesthetists, nurses, and support staff.

Lumbry Park Vets: Inspiring the Next Generation!
Huge shout-out to our Imaging Specialist, Carolina Urraca, for agreeing to visit her son's nursery and talk about being a vet!
Carolina, with a little help from Widget (the special guest!), captivated the young minds with an interactive session. The kids learned all about what vets do, dressed like mini-vets, and even got a fascinating look at a real dog skull!
At Lumbry Park Referrals, we believe in fostering a love for animals and promoting veterinary awareness from a young age.
Carolina's visit is a fantastic example of how our dedicated specialists go above and beyond to connect with the community.

Meet Arnold
Meet Arnold, a young Chihuahua who first came to Lumbry Park on 7th January. He was with us for 14 days and was critically ill for the majority of this time with severe gastrointestinal dysfunction, very likely caused by parvovirus. Arnold recently sent a photo diary of his latest exploits and we and his family would like to share his journey with you.
Arnold was referred to us after waxing and waning signs when he suddenly collapsed. He was severely dehydrated and in shock, he was showing signs of sepsis with a rapid heart rate, thready pulses, fever and abdominal pain. He was triaged by the Emergency Service and stayed within the Critical Care Team throughout his two week stay.
He had severe gastroenteritis with intestinal haemorrhage and consumptive thrombocytopenia (low platelets).
He developed multiple-organ dysfunction (MODS):
a) myelosuppression with a neutropenia (very low white blood cell count 0.1) so prophylactic antibiosis was used to reduce risk of gut-derived sepsis
b) gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction with severe ileus requiring prolonged enteral feeding, multiple prokinetics and high fluid rates up to 10 ml/kg/hr due to fluid losses
c) hypoglycaemia
d) anaemia from GI haemorrhage requiring two blood pRBC blood transfusions
e) hypoalbuminaemia due to intestinal loss causing oedema. It dropped to very low levels which can be challenging to manage in veterinary patients. As Arnold is a small patient he was able to have a 50 ml/kg plasma transfusion over several hours which gave him lots of canine albumin as well as the associated fluid safely as he had high fluid requirements.
Arnold was diagnosed with suspected parvoviral enteritis with high levels of viral DNA (Ct 17) in stool despite negative antigen SNAP test given the multi-organ dysfunction noted. This is a life-threatening disease for which we recommend vaccination as a puppy and life-long. Vaccination programmes aim to reduce severity of disease but cannot remove risk altogether, as
