UK Summer 2024. The sun beats down as we all share a collective glow of a bronzed suntan built up over weeks of long warm days. Our weekends are filled with countess BBQs as we all revel over international football results. National newspapers proclaim "Longest Heatwave in 200 years!", a permanent smile spans our faces because who can be unhappy when the sun is shining.

OK, yes none of that is true. It's been rubbish. Last night I briefly wondered if July was too early to put the heating on. On top of that we keep being bread crumbed by the newspapers promising warmer weather.

As of today, we are promised 40 degree temperatures by the end of July, no wait, August, no wait...oh p**s off! I refuse to believe it. My heart cannot take the disappointment.

Let me tell you the story of Dog Meats Bone

Picture Sydney sometime in the 80’s. We wore jelly shoes, listened to walkmans and the summers were glorious. I was a young girl whose mum would tie her hair up in plaited pigtails. Across the street from our house was an English family. They had a dog named Morgan. A barrel shaped bull terrier who loved nothing more than to yank on my pigtails while I giggled uncontrollably.

I promised my-jelly-shoed-self that when I grew up I would one day have a Morgan of my own.

Fast forward to a cold and dark Manchester night in November 2019. My bull terrier puppy, Enid, is home for the first time. Being that type – you know the type - I read all I could about owning a dog; the books, the blog posts, the discussion boards. I asked experienced owners “What’s the best thing to feed my puppy?” Resoundingly their response was raw meat.

But…wait...I’m a vegetarian.

More reading and more research. I became confused with the jargon…completes, complimentary, 10% bone, some veg. No, no veg, definitely fish but only a certain amount! Oh god! FORGET EVERYTHING AND JUST FEED TRIPE ONLY!!!!

My head spun. It was so complicated and the thought of hacking at a carcass to weigh liver and kidneys in my kitchen horrified me.

It wasn’t long before I discovered that there were meals – already made – that I could defrost and tip into a bowl. Perfect. My problem was solved.

That was until the day when my little, then 4 months old, puppy Enid stopped eating.

My freezer was full of dog food. I had just mastered the art of freezer Tetris and piled kilos of food into my chest drawers. To make matters worse, I was on a subscription. More would be coming any day all the while food was going to go to waste. Meal after defrosted meal, my puppy went hungry. I worried. This was not the time in her life to go on a hunger strike. Even Gandhi waited until he was 44.

Cancel the subscription, clear the freezer of food and start again. Let’s try another brand.

Success! She was eating.

Until she stopped. Again.

Let’s try another one.

Yes!

No.

I was driving all over. I drove to Bury. Tameside. Warrington. I had to find a brand she liked and that was going to make her grow into a strong and healthy dog. I wanted her to have the best start in life and that meant good nutrition.

Then, COVID hit. Lockdown.

Undeterred I was still travelling miles every week to find my puppy’s meals but this time it meant waiting outside shops as I recycled my own breath behind a cheap mask. The things we do for our dogs but why did this have to be so difficult?

I wanted to make it easier for all of us. High quality dog food to your door. No need to spend hours researching. No need to spend hours travelling miles to find food your dog will eat and enjoy and beg for seconds. Close your eyes, spin around three times, point and no matter what you feed you’re going to find great food for the most cherished member of the family.

Got a foot fe**sh?

To make room for some exciting new products I have chicken and duck feet on offer.

And it's a good one. 1kg for £1.50.

These can be fed as snacks or with raw meals. Dogs love the crunch and they add a little bit of interest to same old, same old meals. They are also wonderful for joint health. These are raw bones so safe to consume.

Don't feed too many at once though. These bony limbs can and will result in hard crumbly poos if you indulge!

I would recommend 1 a day and check the outgoings.

The shop will be closed for two weeks while my brother visits from Australia. No fear though, there will still be home deliveries and collections on selected dates to ensure cupboards and freezer drawers won't go empty.

Today someone came into the shop to ask about the kind of food at Dog Meats Bone.

He was currently feeding a supermarket kibble with a supermarket tinned food. After a quick look at the ingredients he was shocked (and so was I if I'm honest) that the kibble was practically 100% carbs!

Do you know exactly what you're feeding your dog? It's easy to grab a pack at the supermarket but not all foods are created equal.

At Dog Meats Bone all of our food are a minimum of 70% meat content. There is not a cereal or grain in sight!
