When you adopt always get your pet scanned to check the microchip details and it's location in the body.

Annually checking of the microchip is a good idea too.

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/158mtX6qeX/

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!

After a lot of studying I have qualified to be a Romanian Rescue Professional Dog Trainer....

This means that I can professionally work with adopters of foreign rescues. So, as well as living with two foreign rescues for several years and experiencing the full impact of their every day challenges I can support other adopters to look deeper into the emotional depths of their dogs.

By adopting from overseas I realised how the dogs were different to British born dogs, how the genetics and bloodline, being from street dogs, meant they were different.

I have learnt and adjust the ways I interacted with and work with these dogs, to accommodate their more streetwise and cautious characteristics.

If you have an overseas/Romanian rescue and feel that you need some support please get in touch.

What are you doing for your mental health today?

I am having fun and taking time out from my busy life with a relaxing play with my beautiful and funny rescues on World Mental Health Day.

Socialisation and enrichment in a supermarket car park!

There are so many noises, smells and movement in a car park can be quite scary. Take it slowly, use lots of space, watch your dogs body language, support them, give them rewards.

Pepper used to hate lots of movement in car parks and shop doorways but with training she now gets upset if she can't go into the shop 🫣

Be prepared for your next holiday where you are bound to end up on a busy high street with your dog.

Take advantage of avoiding the mud and do your training in a mud free zone.

I think dog first aid is something every dog owner, sitter, carer, walker should know.

About a year after doing my first ever dog first aid course my dog had a seizure and stopped breathing. Using the knowledge from this course I was able to give my dog mouth to nose resuscitation, which successfully revived him. After a short trip to the vet he came home happy and alive! This course saved my dogs life.

This is a local course with a donation to a dog charity.

I will be one of the students on the course, renewing my certificate..........maybe see you there!

We are hosting an excellent Canine First Aid Course that will be presented by Dog First Aid Training Ltd.
The course is fully accredited and the certification valid for 3 years.
All profits will be donated to The Thin Blue Paw Foundation who support retired Polce Dogs with medical treatment as it is virtually impossible for them to get insurance. It is essential for their care and wellbeing in retirement.

Please contact me to book tickets as the number is limited .

If you have a puppy and would like to support them as they grow up a puppy foundation in your own home could really help.

There is so much on the course from the correct equipment to buy, puppy biting, lead walk, recall, mat settle and so much more.

I will even teach you how to go to the pub/cafe for a relaxing time with your puppy!

When training with puppys and dogs you need to know the best tools to help them and us. Having a correctly fitting harness won't teach them to walk nicely at the side of us, it also won't stop them pulling but neither will a slip lead.

Training is the only way to teach a dog to walk alongside us, so when training why not make it as safe and comfortable as possible for your dog. Chose something well fitting to use on their body, like a Y shaped harness so if they do pull, whilst in training, they will not come to any harm.

Once they have mastered the loose lead walking and can do it 100% of the time it does not matter what the dog wears as they won't be pulling.

Below is a great illustration as what can happen to your dog when untrained and walking on a slip lead.

Choosing the correct type of equipment to use with your puppy/dog is something I teach.

Yesterday, I received the following email from a researcher for the TV programme *Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly*:

"𝑀𝑦 𝑛𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑖𝑠 (redacted) 𝐼 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑇𝑉 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤 ‘𝐷𝑜𝑔𝑠 𝐵𝑒ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑔 (𝑉𝑒𝑟𝑦) 𝐵𝑎𝑑𝑙𝑦’.

My first thought was to delete the email. I'm not a fan of Graeme Hall. I've watched a few episodes of his show, and in my opinion, he seems to make things up as he goes along, relying on outdated training methods.

However, I was puzzled. Was the “cravat” unwell, and they needed a stand-in? I'm a nobody – why on earth would they want to film me training a dog when there are so many high-profile trainers out there? Curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to give the researcher a call.

I'm still in shock as I write this. The researcher explained that they wanted to invite me to Lytham with my Border Collie to "demonstrate" to Graeme Hall how I would train my dog not to respond to a phone ringtone.

Graeme would then take my training method and use it to teach the Border Collie of the family seeking help – all while filming it for his TV show!

WTF 😳😳😳

I decided to dig a bit deeper and reached out to the force-free dog training community to see if anyone else had experienced something this bizarre.

It turns out that many trainers had also been asked to attend filming sessions to show Graeme how to train dogs before the cameras rolled. Most reported that they refused because of his methods, but a few had shown him and his team how to train a dog, only to be dismissed without any credit for their expertise.

I then did some open-source research on "The Country’s Best Dog Trainer," as the *Daily Telegraph* calls him. He has no formal training in canine behaviour or training. He’s essentially winging it with the help of whatever trainers are willing to show up and assist him.

According to his website, he charges £875 per session 🤔😧

Now I’m not someone who normally criticises other trainers. I prefer to let my clients decide if I’m the right trainer for them based on how I work with their dogs.

However, I couldn’t let this pass without making it public knowledge.

If you're looking for a dog trainer, please avoid this programme and this man. You have no idea whose techniques he’ll be using week to week, and given that most qualified and accredited trainers want nothing to do with him, the quality of training you’ll receive is questionable at best.

Instead, do your own research and find a local trainer who aligns with your own dog training ethics. Organisations such as The IMDT or APDT - Association of Pet Dog Trainers can help guide you to qualified & accredited trainers in your area.

Pepper has lost her confidence on her walks after the tree nearly came down on her and my daughter and understandably wants to completely avoid the canal.

So each walk now is planned to help her gaining her confidence. New woodland walks to get used to walking under trees, new canals walks so nothing is familiar. As well as her usual favourite walks. As usual, fully focusing on Peppers body language, to see if she is comfortable with the adventures we are having.

We can cope with a set back if we work as a team. New adventures lie ahead. ❤️

I have spent the whole of my teenage daughters life working with dogs. She completes some of the Zoom course with me, she reads some of the books, she attends training courses when she can sneak in.

Well today, my daughter has proven that she has learnt so much about dogs.

Whilst on a canal walk with our rescue Pepper, Pepper looked up at the trees above them, my daughter followed her gaze, they both heard a noise above. Tabby expected it to be a squirrel, but Pepper knew better and wanted to run and Tabby followed fast. Above them a large tree branch came crashing down narrowly missing them. Pepper saved both of them from an injury.

Dogs body language is so important, don't always assume you know what is going on.

This is a great low energy behaviour to train to support your dog at the vets, being administered medication or just to settle in a certain place.

Dog training is about getting your whole family involved and having fun with it. Training should be part of everyday life not just when you get bored!
