Here's 10 tips for dogs training success from Dogs Trust

I would add No. 11: Join our Club and we'll help you with all 10 !

Before you start training your pup, here are 10 tips to help ensure that it is a success.

1. Try it without your dog first, so you are clear and can avoid confusing them.

2. Ensure the training is done in a calm space that is free of distractions.

3. Make sure your dog has eaten and been to the toilet before you start.

4. Only use positive reinforcement – reward with praise or a tasty treat and mix up what you use keep it interesting for your pooch.

5. Show your pooch what you want them to do, don’t physically force them to do it.

6. Be calm and consistent.

7. Keep training sessions short (five to 10 minutes at a time) – and focus on training one behaviour before ending the session with a fun game.

8. Record your progress – you could film it and / or write it down.

9. Be patient. If pup is struggling, stop and go back a step and progress more slowly next time.

10. Have fun and enjoy yourself – if either of you aren’t, pick it up another day.

Are you about to start training your dog? Check out our top tips to ensure it is a success.

With less than a week to go, it’s easy to get swept up in the holiday excitement! 🎄
But remember to keep your dog safe by watching out for these common Christmas hazards:

❌ Antifreeze & road salt – harmful if ingested.
❌ Poinsettias, holly & mistletoe – can be toxic if eaten.
❌ Potpourri – Can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, or choking.
❌ Christmas lights & small Decorations – choking and blockage hazards.
❌ Cooked bones – Can splinter easily and cause internal injuries.
❌ Chocolate & nuts – Toxic and can lead to serious health issues.
❌ Christmas pudding, mince pies & stollen – contain dried fruits like raisins, currants, and other toxic ingredients.

And “it’s a wrap for 2024” as they say! What a great year our Club has had with events, demonstrations, parties, training and of course a lot of fun.
Have a great Christmas break and our very best wishes for 2025.
See you all again 6th January.
And remember to keep those chocolates away from your dogs!

13/12/2024

We're craving our Christmas dinner already, but which foods can you share with your dog? 🍗
Turns out, quite a lot! Do you treat your dog at Christmas? If so, just be confident that you're giving them safe snacks.

You can share ✅
Plain turkey and sausages, veggies like carrots, peas, parsnips and sweet potatoes.

Be sure to avoid ❌
Sweet treats with dried fruits like raisins such as Christmas Pudding, Mince Pies and Stollen. Steer clear of onions, blue cheese and stuffing - and of course, chocolate!

The aim of International Dog Day is to encourage people to take care of these animals as they deserve a good life.

The official website of the event says, “Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort.”

On this day, let’s honour dogs as our loyal companions and help raise awareness about their needs

There’s still time to add your name to the list of those coming to our exciting Search Dogs Buckinghamshire demo and talk tomorrow Monday 12 August (free of charge).

We’re supporting this charity that assist the police and other Search and Rescue teams to look for and recover missing vulnerable adults and children.

They are routinely called upon to search for people with mental health problems, particularly those at risk of self-harm; the elderly; those living with conditions such as dementia; children; and persons with a learning disability.

We’re really looking forward to it!

With children and pets spending more time together over the summer holidays, it's super important to watch dogs closely and listen to their body language ⚠️

Dogs' stress signals often get misunderstood or missed, with some owners not realising their dog is unhappy until they growl, snap or even bite.

The canine ladder of communication is a useful guide, showing the different signals dogs show through their body language to communicate. As a dog gets more upset, their body language may change according to the steps on the ladder 🚦

It’s important to note that all dogs are different - not every dog will show every behaviour on the ladder and might not follow the same order.

[Visual description: An infographic explaining Kendal Shepherd’s ladder of communication and how to recognise stress in dogs by the signs they show in their body language. This is a traffic light system with red signals being the worst. Green signals are: Yawning, blinking, nose licking and turning their head away. Yellow signals are: Sitting and turning their body away, walking away, creeping and having their ears back. Orange signals are: Standing crouched, tail tucked, lying down with their belly exposed in a submissive way, stiffening up and staring. Red signals are: Growling, snapping and biting.]
