๐๐พ Keep Your Pet Safe This Halloween! ๐พ๐
Halloween is full of fun and frights, but it can be a spooky time for our pets. Here are some tips to help you keep your furry friends safe and happy during the festivities:
๐ป Watch Out for Treats: Chocolate and sweets can be toxic to pets! Keep all Halloween treats out of reach, and make sure your guests do the same.
๐ Costumes with Caution: If your pet enjoys dressing up, make sure their costume is comfortable, non-restrictive, and free from choking hazards. If they seem stressed, itโs best to skip the costume and let them enjoy the fun in their natural fur!
๐ฏ๏ธ Decorations Danger: Candles in pumpkins, loose wires, and small decorations can be hazardous for curious pets. Keep anything dangerous out of reach to avoid accidents.
๐ช Stranger Anxiety: With the doorbell ringing and unfamiliar visitors in costumes, your pet might feel anxious or overwhelmed. Create a calm, quiet space where they can relax away from the noise and excitement.
๐ Outdoor Safety: If your pet is usually outside, consider bringing them in for the night. Halloween pranks can sometimes put animals at risk, and all the commotion can cause them to run off in fear.
๐ ID & Microchip: In case your pet does escape, make sure they have proper ID tags and that their microchip details are up to date.
Letโs make this Halloween fun and safe for everyoneโincluding our beloved pets! ๐๐๐

How to check your pets teeth. ๐ฆท
As a pet owner, it is difficult to get your pet to sit still at the best times so to get them to sit still long enough for you to check their teeth can seem challenging!
Here Dino and I demonstrate a safe and effective way of doing a check of his mouth, looking at all of his teeth. I also have a little look at the roof and the back of his mouth whilst Iโm there.
Here are some top tips on how to safely and effectively check your pets mouth:
DO it slowly. For cats and dogs, having someone approaching their face and trying to look in their mouth can be very worrying.
DONโT make it a negative experience. Lots of praise, gentle encouragement and positive reinforcement is a must.
DO try to look at all of their teeth, including those ones hidden at the back. You never do what may be lurking.
DONโT stick your fingers in their mouth. Nobody wants to be bitten!
Have you had a go at checking your pets mouth at home? Let us know how you get on! ๐ฆท
If you struggle with checking your pets mouth, our team of Veterinary Nurses can carry out pet dental checks here in the practice and advise on dental care. ๐ฉท
Bellaโs story continuedโฆ
Shortly after confirmation that Bella had this corn on the cob lodged in her oesophagus, she had an emergency endoscopy procedure in a bid to remove this foreign object safely. Unfortunately this was not possible due to the size of the segment that was stuck, and after discussions with the surgical team and her dedicated owner, Bella had not one, not two but THREE segments of the cob surgically removed via gastrotomy. ๐ฝ
Bella had a tube surgically placed into her stomach which allowed her receive all important nutrition and medication, whilst allowing her oesophagus to heal from the trauma during her recovery process.
2 - 3 months of dedicated care and treatment for this little lady, her recent endoscopy procedure revealed that her oesophagus has healed well from the ordeal and she was able to have her stomach tube removed ready to start going back to a more normal life with her family.
Look at her now! At 12 years old, she really is a West Highland terrier soldier. ๐ค
AFFECTION ALERT! ๐จ

I often advise my clients to think about raising their dogs food bowls. This allows for a more neutral spine & means the weight is spread more evenly through all 4 legs instead of the front limbs when eating from the floor. It doesnโt need to be expensive or purpose built, these little fold up seats do the job perfectly & come in different heights ๐พ
