I have copied this from another post to help educate those that ask to shave a double coated dog 🐕🐾

Double coats play a role but DO NOT magically cool a dog down. Let’s break it down and let’s remember a one size (quite literally) doesn’t fit all.

The undercoat traps air against the skin. If that air is cool or there is a breeze this will be very effective in helping our dogs. When they leave the home where the air is cool and enter 22c heat that undercoat will help to keep them cool for sometime and those guard hairs (the top coat) will act like leaves on a tree - shade. BUT as the air becomes hot the undercoat will move and trap warm air against the skin and the guard hairs will make it difficult for that warm air to leave unless it’s windy. So this double coat will only be effective if it can move (very regular grooming needed) AND the weather is windy. Otherwise it’ll keep the dog cooler for longer but then heat them up making it hard for heat to escape.

But the double coat does protect that fragile skin, so if you keep it well maintained, your dog is not overweight, you don’t subject them to hot temperatures, and they aren’t a giant breed who is a bigger risk of overheating. Then clipping is not necessary, especially if they are young (older dogs find it harder to thermoregulate).

Remember that double coat keeps them warm in the winter, how many hot days do we get here in the U.K.?! Can you make more effort to groom/get them groomed, provide a fan, plenty of cold water drinking options, get their weight down, and avoid waking when over 20c? If so then clipping is potentially not necessary!

If there is existing skin disease clipping will help you to apply topical products, if there isn’t clipping can expose fragile skin. Some undercoat must be left to protect it. And you have to be prepared to apply sunscreen and potentially be ready for an increase risk of skin disease.

For some the guard hairs can take 4 years to grow back! Yes that may look aesthetically unpleasant. That’ll also mean less protection against the wet and dirt. They’ll need a winter coat on. The double coat helps them maintain optimum body temperature.

Like everyone I.e. neutering there is not a one size fits all. You need to assess every dog, here is an example. I was asked would you clip a double coated breed who appears to be struggling with the heat and has cancer and not predicted to survive past the summer, well yes I would clip if all other cooling options have been explored. But generally it’s not a yes for all you need to ask questions, discuss pro’s and con’s. But ultimately a clipped coat will cool but could mean other problems may arise…

Customer announcement ..

it's that time of year where dogs are more prone to getting fleas and ticks and we completely understand this is normal, but for care of our team and other clients dogs we would kindly ask you all to inform us in advance if you're dogs may have them. we are happy to deal with the situation and take them in but to prevent any contamination and business loss, the shop would need a full disinfectant time. The shop would also temporarily be closed so that we can prepare the team and the shop in order to handle the situation safley. Not informing us beforehand could lead to us having to cancel or delay other booked sessions. There will also be a fee on top of the groom if we find any fleas on your dog we physically can not afford to have any fleas in the salon and risking bringing them home to our pets and other clients taking them home to theirs. So please make sure you inform us we do not judge.

Amlwch Dog Grooming Ltd would like to confirm arrangements for the next few weeks, whilst Emma completes her maternity.

W/c Monday 13 may - Friday 31 may
The shop will be open 10-2, Tuesday - thursday.
There will be no dog grooming but washes can be booked in on those days with shaunna. Unfortunately no nails or cuts will be included in the washes it will be a was and brush ONLY
W/c 3 June onwards, the shop will be open 10-2 Tuesday - Thursday.
Grooms and washes can be booked in on Tuesdays and Thursdays and dog washes ONLY on Wednesdays.

Meet Bobby Eilian Antony dixon he is now 8 days old and he is the most amazing baby ever he can’t wait to meet all the dogs that come in for a cuddle. 🥰

Hello everyone. I has now decided it’s time to go on maternity leave after this week I am due to have our baby in 2 weeks, I have held on to my scissors for as long as i could, but Because baby dixon hasn’t given me the best easy time these last few months causing mayhem already 🙈🤣 i can’t stand for too long and can’t risk hurting myself by doing too much (many people have told me to slow down with working) but I love my job too much i dont want to let anyone down. I have pushed myself to my max limits and realised it’s too much for me to put myself through, So from next week onwards Jasmine and shaunna will be taking over until I am back which will be between 4-8 weeks depending on how the birth goes. I will be in the shop doing small jobs but i won’t be able to groom until I am back. Thankyou to everyone for understanding and Thankyou everyone for the well wishes. 🐶🐾❤️
