As a dog professional and dog owner I see a lot of dogs that are out of control. A lot of the time the owners aren’t even aware that their dog is a potential issue or what the consequences are so here is the UK government’s take on the matter for clarity.

Controlling your dog in public

It’s against the law to let a dog be dangerously out of control anywhere, such as:

in a public place
in a private place, for example a neighbour’s house or garden
in the owner’s home
The law applies to all dogs.

You can report a dog that’s out of control.

Some types of dogs are banned.

Out of control
Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it:

injures someone
makes someone worried that it might injure them
A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if either of the following apply:

it attacks someone’s animal
the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attacking their animal
Penalties
You can get an unlimited fine or be sent to prison for up to 6 months (or both) if your dog is dangerously out of control. You may not be allowed to own a dog in the future and your dog may be destroyed.

If you let your dog injure someone you can be sent to prison for up to 5 years or fined (or both). If you deliberately use your dog to injure someone you could be charged with ‘malicious wounding’.

If you allow your dog to kill someone you can be sent to prison for up to 14 years or get an unlimited fine (or both).

If you allow your dog to injure an assistance dog (for example a guide dog) you can be sent to prison for up to 3 years or fined (or both).

Client testimonial

I have known Mark since he was a teenager, and a few years ago I met his dog Grayson and I could not believe how well behaved he was, so when we were having problems with our dog Alfie we turned to Mark for help. Alfie was so naughty and we were at the end of our tether and about to give up on him. Mark came along and he told us exactly where we were going wrong and how to do things to gain respect from Alfie. Mark really knows what makes dogs tick and how to get there attention. Thanks to Mark we now have a great dog that we would never part with and we know if we needed any more help Mark is at the end of the phone.

Fortunately, there are several things you can do to stop your dog from pulling. In this post, we’ll go over some of the best techniques for breaking your dog of this bad habit. Ready to learn how to stop your dog from pulling?

Introducing Millie the Golden Retriever.
Temporarily joining the WTAD pack for some residential training over the festive period.
Millie is a challenge for her owners who are less mobile in their twilight years so we will be spending the next few weeks focusing on real world situations and everyday behaviour training before we then reintroduce her to her owners for their handover training.

Does your dog pull on their lead?
Are you struggling with your puppy jumping up at passers by and other dogs?
We all dream of picture perfect walks with our dogs happy by our sides but often this is far from the truth.
So many owners have stressful walks because they simply haven’t taught their dogs how to behave in public.
Fear not, help is at hand.
We Train Any Dog offers behaviour advice and corrective training plans for this and many other issues you may be facing.
Call or message to arrange a free consultation and together we can agree a plan that best suits you and your dog.

Imagine my horror at seeing dog owners walking their dogs yesterday evening when the temperature was still in the mid 20’s.

Then, matters were made worse by 2 cyclists who thought nothing wrong with having there Spaniel running, yes running, alongside them, off lead, as they cycled down the lane. The off lead little chap ran towards me but stopped before he got close, basically it did nothing wrong. Female owner started shouting “heel” to her dog and then verbally punished it.

Whilst I got into a heated and animated debate with male owner, female owner grabbed the then terrified dog by its neck, lifted him to her head height and was shaking it and shouting right in its face.
The owners saw no harm in exercising their dog in this heat, off lead, while they were on their bikes and definitely didn’t see the harm in the way in which the dog was being punished.

I am not one to hold my tongue when I see things in life I do not agree with, be that male on female abuse, child abuse or animal cruelty, so I was not about to back down and not give the owners a piece of my mind.

More must be done to raise awareness of animal welfare and to educate the uneducated.

This kind of treatment of a dog is what keeps shelters full of dogs and keeps behavioural professionals such as myself in business. I’d prefer not to be having clients who are presenting issues that can be directly attributed to negative or forceful training.
Having to reprimand your dog in such a manner will only create fear in your dog and it diminishes and destroys any trust the dog has built in you.
You’re a leader who has now lost control.
When humans treat other humans this way, all respect goes out of the window and all that’s left is hurt and mistrust.

So to the couple I met last night, congratulations, you’ve punished your dog for your own wrongdoing in that you had no control of your off-lead dog in a public place, I hope you feel big and clever now.

To those dog owners who treat our animals with kindness and respect and who deserve the love of your four legged family members, please remember how hot it is and think before you head out on your walks this weekend. 🐾

I thought I would take this time to introduce myself and give a bit of a background as to why I am here.
Formally We Train Any Dog North Yorkshire, I have taken WTAD and brought it to Hampshire.
I used to work with Heather Stevens who taught me a lot about what it is to be a dog trainer. Heather is a published author, canine functional character specialist, trainer and behaviourist so I was in good company.
I have trained countless dogs over the years, both my own and that of my wonderful clients.
The idea behind my methods is to take a modern day and science based approach and train YOU as handlers. We only teach with kindness and we leave the rolled up newspapers for when we as handlers make a mistake.
My behavioural experience comes from my Ph.D. in zoological behaviour, my degrees in animal sciences, and that is then fine-tuned with canine specific courses that I have completed with various national bodies, including the Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour & Training where I was fortunate to learn from some of the leading experts in the UK.
I am a member of the Guild of Dog Trainers and I am currently working up my vet referral status through the Canine & Feline Behaviour Association. Once this is in place I will be able to offer behavioural training post vet referral and your pet insurance will usually cover the costs.
I can usually be found walking with my Weimaraner and letting him prove to you that even trained dogs can make me look bad, so if you see us, stop and say hello and feel free to ask me any burning questions.
