Does your dog eat small portions? Partially defrost 1kg blocks of raw over night, portion and refreeze 😎

This makes feeding raw more cost effective, less waste, easier to keep smaller portions fresh, and it is a great way to get more variety into the diet 👌

Ellie gets 200g of mince a day split into 2 meals so a 1kg block is a bit too much (although she wouldn't say no to bigger portions!!), it's so much easier cutting these in half and then each 500g block is 2.5 days worth for her.

She also gets a range of chicken wings, chicken necks, turkey necks, beef chunks, beef ribs, venison spines and more throughout the week to make up the rest of her daily allowance, plus these encourage her to chew to aid her dental & mental health 😁

👉 Top Tip: If the meat is still very frozen when you come to portion it, use a bread knife, doesn't make sense I know but a bread knife is great at cutting through semi-frozen mince..!

HYDRATION PART 2:

Dry nose, dull dry or brittle coat, dry eyes, itchy skin, cracked paw pads, bad breath, thick saliva, lethargic, pale gums and loss of appetite are some of the external signs of dehydration.

A dog or cat that drinks a lot of water and urinates frequently can also be dehydrated! This is due to the kidneys trying to balance the electrolyte levels within the body. If the body is low on electrolytes then by drinking additional water the electrolyte levels in the body are even further diluted, this is where frequent urination may be seen and mistaken for being properly hydrated as the body removes more water from the body in an attempt to rebalance the low electrolyte levels at the expense of becoming even further dehydrated.

You can improve hydration in your dog or cat by feeding bone broth (it contains naturally occurring electrolytes and is a superior bio-available form of hydration), if you are fresh feeding add a few grains of quality salt to your dog's meals (Celtic salt or Himalayan salts are great choices!) - don't add extra salt to a kibble meal as this is already likely to be high in salt to improve palatability, instead swap the diet to a more hydrating form of food first.

Table salt is a heavily processed form of salt and not a suitable addition to the diet for our pets or ourselves. Instead opt for Celtic salt or Himalayan salt.

Celtic salt contains 80+ different minerals plus many trace elements! Including all six primary electrolytes as well as many different minerals that are needed by the body - calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, zinc, iodine and potassium, it is also lower in sodium than table salt.

Incorporate Celtic salt into your diet too!

HYDRATION PART 1:

Does your dog or cat struggle with a sensitive stomach, asthma, allergies, diabetes, constipation, auto-immune diseases, colitis, heartburn, sleep disturbances, over-excitability, restlessness, vigilance, or a dull dry coat? Is your dog or cat always 'hungry' or are they actually in need of quality hydration?

These are just some of the side effects of dehydration!

Being dehydrated, even just mildly with no obvious outward signs, can result in decreased function of many organs within the body leading to the above diseases. It also results in an increased production of histamine in the body.

Feeding a fresh raw or lightly cooked diet is the best way to support suitable hydration for our pets. Feeding bone broth is also a great way to support hydration.

If you feed a dry food your dog or cat is very likely to be in a state of permanent mild dehydration - how many older cats and dogs suffer from kidney disease later on in life?

A wet food is better than a kibble as there is some moisture in the food but this is still not optimal for keeping our animals properly hydrated.

Adding water to kibble also isn't the same thing as feeding fresh food. The water content in fresh food is in a different state to tap water and is much more bio-available to the body.

Next time your dog or cat seems hungry between meals offer them some bone broth or a bowl of water with some treats sprinkled in!
