Congratulations to this stud owner, I did a ovulation check on a girl and said give it a try as the stud is so close to me but.. Do not force it as I did feel it was a little early by a day.

I am pleased to say it was bang on advice wise, she got a tie the next day, (if the stud wasn't close to me I would not have sent her).

Video sent to me today of a mum to be in labour.

If your new to breeding this is what it looks like, she will pant, her tummy will go hard and she will actively dig up her bedding.

Make sure you have lots of old towels and newspaper specifically so she can shred and dig to her hearts content.

She was ovulation tested and ultrasound scanned here.

HMRC and paying tax

This has been a hot topic in dog breeding groups and papers over the last few weeks, with breeders receiving letters from the HMRC requesting unpaid tax from litters bred.

Stellar star is my business and as such a do yearly tax returns so I thought I would give you a very basic breakdown to understand if you are within scope.

So income is everything that's comes to you as payment be that from a PAYE job, pension, benefits etc. Everyone is allowed a personal allowance of £12, 570 per year that is untaxable, anything over is taxed.

If you turn over (not profit) more than 1k in a given year you must register for a self assessment and declare it to HMRC. You have that personal allowance so you still need to declare but you just won't be taxed untill you are over.

You are only taxed on profit so you need to keep copies of recipts to offset and prove your outgoings. You can claim anything that is in relation to breeding the dog, so in a nut shell the more you can prove the less tax you pay.

Paying tax is not linked to needing a licence it is a separate issue so It doesnt matter if you have 1 litter or 10 chances are you will turn over more than 1k so you will need to do a self assessment. It's easy to apply for this with the HMRC and they are very helpful if you ring them up.

I personally have income from a few sources, from a full time job, this fertility business which is part time as well as online sales. It gets a bit complicated so I pay a charted accountant to ensure it is done correctly, my suggestion is to do the same if your unsure of what you need to do.

I keep a spread sheet that I track monthly, cross ref in folders with links to my reciepts, then at the end of the tax year I hand it all over to my accountant.

Keep copies of everything for 10 years in folders incase HMRC do a spot check, and back everything up on separate hard drives if its all electronic.

Paying tax isn't scary, dodging tax and getting caught out is.

A cute scan to end the day on.

I scanned her last week and saw 3 but because the dog was hairy I advised the number was realistically between 3-5.

The owners come back today for another scan so I could show her son. Today's scan showed 4 which is bang in the middle of what I advised to expect.

We count together and I take videos so I can send it over to you.

Counts are an approximation.
