Heatstroke in dogs is no joke. Here are some FACTS.
In the UK, any temperature 21 degrees and above can cause heat stroke. Today (30/06/2025) has peaked at 30 and at 22:00 it will still be 22 degrees!
The survival rate is around 50%....YES, a 50% chance your dog could die.
It takes around 30 days for a dog to condition itself to hotter temperatures, thats how dogs in hotter countries fair better.
At excessive temperature's that your dog is not conditioned to, vital organs will begin to fail, at a rapid rate. Some beyond the point of no return.
Short snouted (brachycephalic) dogs are at a greater risk, as are larger breeds with thick double coats.
An unconscious dog is very difficult to revive, especially as most owners will not be trained in canine first aid.
Signs to look out for.
Unsteady and lethargic
Excessive drooling without excessive drinking
Vomiting
Bright red or pale gums
Diarrhoea
Excessive panting, some breeds pant heavily anyway so this should be more than typical, and clear signs of breathing difficulty.
DON'T TAKE THE RISK! If you have to take your dog out to the toilet, do that and that only...don't assume a few more steps just for some exercise won't hurt!
I'd list some ways to keep your dog cool, but honestly, if you don't know by now you should really question if owning a dog is for you!
