Adders and how hot weather affects them.🐍

Adders, like many reptiles, are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. During hot weather, adders become more active as the increased temperature provides the warmth they need for optimal physiological functioning. This can lead to more frequent sightings and encounters, especially in sunny areas.

In warm conditions, adders are likely to emerge from their shelters to bask in the sun. This behaviour helps them to reach an ideal body temperature more quickly, which is necessary for activities such as hunting and digestion. As a result, they may be more visible during the hotter parts of the day.

During hot weather, adders often prefer habitats that offer a mix of sunlight and shade. This allows them to regulate their body temperature by moving between warm and cool areas as needed. You might find them in open fields, heathlands, or near the edges of forests where both sunny and shaded spots are available.

Hot weather increases the likelihood of encounters between dogs and adders. Dogs, curious by nature, may venture into areas where adders are basking. dog guardians should be vigilant and keep their dogs on a lead in areas known for adder populations, especially during the warmer months.
