Dog Space Etiquette 101: ๐พ
Dogs need personal space too! Show respect to our furry friends and their owners by following these tips:
โก๏ธ Keep your off-leash dog from approaching on-leash dogs
โก๏ธ Lock retractable leashes around other dogs
โก๏ธ Ask before approaching or petting other dogs
โก๏ธ Extend compassion to owners of shy/reactive dogs.
Let's create a pawsitively respectful environment!
Wishing all my members old and new, near and far a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Enjoy the festivities and love your dogs and keep them safe. ๐ค๐โ๐พ๐พ

Xylitol (sometimes called wood sugar or birch sugar) is a common sugar substitute that can be toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can be fatal.
Itโs regularly found in sugar-free chewing gum, toothpaste, mouthwash, vitamin supplements, a small handful of peanut butter brands and other 'low sugar' or sugar-free products. Prevention is key. All human food should be kept out of the reach of dogs, but be particularly vigilant around products containing xylitol. Ensure no packs of chewing gum are left lying around the home or kept in pockets and handbags that your pet can raid.
Signs of poisoning can be rapid or delayed, but you should never wait for symptoms to appear before seeking veterinary help. This could put your dogโs life at risk. In most cases, symptoms will start to appear within 30 minutes but can take up to 12 hours to develop in some cases.
Symptoms can include:
vomiting
lethargy (tiredness)
disorientation
collapse
seizures and tremors
unconsciousness or coma
If you suspect that your dog has eaten something containing xylitol, you need to get them to the vets straight away as it can be absorbed into the blood stream rapidly.
Xylitol can cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar levels) as a dogโs pancreas will confuse it with real sugar, which makes it release more insulin. The insulin then removes the real sugar in the body, leading to plummeting blood sugar levels. Another reaction to xylitol is liver failure and this is even more serious, but itโs not known what causes this to happen.
If a drop in blood sugar levels is prevented or brought under control quickly, the prognosis is good. Delays in veterinary intervention can cause further complications, irreversible damage and increase the likelihood of xylitol poisoning becoming fatal. Ensure that, wherever possible, you take the packaging of the product that your dog has consumed to the vets.

RAISING DOG FRIENDLY CHILDREN ๐ง๐ผ๐ถ๐ฆ๐ผ
โHow can I make my dog more child friendly?โ
The question really should be - โHow can I make my child more dog friendly?โ
Children donโt come with an inborn ability to know how to treat dogs. Itโs up to us to teach them.
If you think about it, dogs are actually amazingly tolerant and patient with people even when their attempts to communicate through their body language, that theyโre really uncomfortable, are completely ignored or not understood.
Itโs an important responsibility to teach our children about how to respect and behave around dogs.
Always supervise children and dogs, even if a dog seems relaxed and friendly.
Good thought ๐พ๐พ
Positive reward based training doesnโt necessarily mean you have to use training treats. Try using some or all of your dogโs daily food allowance.
Hand feeding (using the food for training), can make a huge difference to your dog's weight and health, as well as your relationship, especially in training.
It is even possible to hand feed if your dog is on wet or raw food. Try freezing it into small pieces or putting some in a squeezable tube.
For help with your training or if youโd like to join us for some dog or puppy training, please get in touch. We'd love to hear from you.
ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION?
Distracted dog walkers
The distracted dog walker is obliviously chatting away on their cell phone, listening to music or a podcast while wearing headphones, catching up on the daily news or socializing with other people while theyโre not aware of what their dog is doing or what is going on in the environment.
This may not sound like a problem to some people, but it is something that I have a problem with.
I understand that we often need to multi task โ there simply doesnโt seem to be enough time in our day to accomplish everything we need to, but walking your dog should not be one of these times.
Some people might say โ โbut my dog is really friendly, well socialized, gets on well with everyone, is well trained, knows this environment well etc. and I hear that. But another dog might not be โ maybe they need space, are reactive, are not sociable, are recovering from an illness, might be terrified of another dog racing straight towards them chasing a ball thrown from a ball launcherโฆ.
If distracted dog walkers have no regard for other dogs or other people, they should at least have regard for their own dogs. Walking your dog should be a time of bonding, of relationship, of seeing the environment through the eyes of your dog, of reinforcing or teaching wanted behaviors, of keeping them safe and protected from the unknown.
Leave the multi-tasking for another time โ your dog needs you to pay attention.
Congratulations to Liz with River and Brenda with Gus on passing your Gold Good Citizen Award. Very proud of you both ๐โบ๏ธ๐พ๐พ
