Today was a sad day, a special patient said goodbye to her family and passed onto her next adventure. I was honoured to be with them and to able to make her transition as peaceful and respectful as possible. I gave my girl an extra special squeeze and of course a biscuit when I got home and told her how awesome she is. I often feel that animals understand the circle of life and their part in the universe so clearly but all the noise in our world prevents us from doing the same. šŸ•Š

Really good to see evidence for Vitamin D interacting with gut bacteria and having positive effects on immunity and cancer risks

šŸ§« Specialist pathologist researchers from the RVCā€“ working alongside The Francis Crick Institute (FCI) and other partners ā€“ have discovered that a diet high in vitamin D encourages the growth of a type of gut bacteria which improves immunity to cancer. These findings published in Science, the worldĀ“s leading multidisciplinary scientific journal, indicate a connection between vitamin D and the immune system, suggesting how increased levels of vitamin D could also play a crucial role in cancer immunity and immunotherapy success in humans.

Today marks our official first day of Spring as our tortoise, Fred, has just come out of hibernation. He is now snuggled up in his outside house and will be having daily warm baths. Fredā€™s first food of a new year is usually his favourite of a dandelion flower but as you can see in the photos he also loves strawberries.

Our Annie has a bump. We are always taught that a lump and bump is just that until we know otherwise at vet school. We have investigated Annieā€™s bump with cytology first, followed by a biopsy. Lucky for Annie and us it is 99% likely to be a benign mass but it is a bit unusual as it is infiltrating a muscle in one of her legs and is continuing to grow. So, today I took her to a local Veterinary Specialist hospital to see a soft tissue surgeon. The plan is for Annie to have a CT scan so we know more about the mass and what is involves in preparation for possible surgery to remove it before it does affect her wellbeing. It is good that we found this quite early so we can work out the best options for Annie. Moral of the story is to remember to check your animal friends for lumps and bumps regularly and if you do find one not to panic but to have it checked by your veterinarian. Knowledge is power and as soon as you know what it is the best placed you are to deal with it.

I am so lucky that as a fully integrative veterinary surgeon I can cover all aspects of my patientā€™s needs. Yesterday I had a busy day doing procedures, this involved supervising an international veterinarian performing two cat neuters, radiographing another cat who had been hit by a car, flushing and treating a dogā€™s infected a**l gland, removing a tooth that had caused a tooth root abscess in a friendā€™s dog, and finally dealing with an emergency when a small dog had been attacked by a larger dog causing one of her eyes to sadly leave its socket behind. As ever too busy to get to the needs of one of my own rescue pets, see photo, who a colleague kindly sedated and helped to diagnose a mass around her bottom that looks like we will need to remove in the near future if

I have just completed a fantastic mastermind acupuncture course. This has given me the knowledge to treat a wider variety of conditions using acupuncture.

This is Clarence who I have been treating for some time now. He has chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis. More recently he has been suffering with gastrointestinal issues and I am also able to use acupuncture to help him with this in the same treatment. Isnā€™t he gorgeous! šŸ’–šŸˆ

ā€œThe prettiest brains I have seen take Ginkgo Bilobaā€

This is a quote by Dr Daniel Amen who has scanned thousands of brains for his research into brain health.

The Ginkgo tree is a living fossil, meaning that it has experienced very little change over millions of years. Ginkgo Biloba is a widely used by herbalists. Studies have shown among other things its ability to stabilise or slow decline in cognition, function and behaviour in cognitive impairment and dementia.

The little one was among a large group of dogs who came for a titre test today. A titre test assesses the level of antibodies to three of the viruses (Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus) that are part of the core vaccination protocol in the UK. Having a titre test means that you can determine if and when your dog requires a vaccination. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in titre tests.

I work as an integrative veterinary surgeon and people often ask me what integrative veterinary care is

Wellā€¦ Integrative veterinary medicine is a comprehensive medical approach to pet care that combines the best of conventional medicine and complementary and alternative therapies. This type of veterinary practice focuses on treating the whole animal, and each animal as an individual. It is the partnership between the client and the veterinarian, and use of all appropriate therapeutic options to achieve optimal wellness for your pet.
The goal of an integrative approach to veterinary medicine is to provide clients with all the options for pet care available. This is achieved by using conventional medicine diagnostics, drugs, procedures like surgery together with other appropriate complimentary medical modalities to obtain the best possible results.
Complimentary and alternative veterinary medicine therapies that may be included in an integrative medicine approach include acupuncture, western or chinese herbal medicine, therapeutic massage, canine physical therapy and rehabilitation, therapeutic nutrition, as well as laser therapy. All of these therapies treat the whole body and can be referred to by the generic term "holistic".

This is the lovely Shadow who came to the clinic in November 2022 after suffering for nearly one year from a chronic nasal discharge. His people were looking for some integrative veterinary treatment to help him.

A previous CT scan had diagnosed Shadow with chronic infection and inflammation. He was having to be given repeated courses of antibiotics every 4 to 6 weeks to keep him comfortable.

Shadow was prescribed a bespoke mix of five herbs and has been taking them on a daily basis for the last six months. Since starting this medication he has been symptom free and has not needed any more antibiotics. We are so happy to have been able to help Shadow he really is a lovely boy.
