We love a success story to start off the New Year! ✨

Meet Hector, a 13-year old domestic shorthair cat. He is a lovely boy who comes in every month to see the nurses for his arthritis injections. It was during one of these appointments that one of our nurses noticed Hector had lost a considerable amount of weight in 1 month. Because of this, the nurse recommended we check Hector's blood pressure which measured high and so further testing was carried out. A urine test showed signs of Diabetes, despite Hector not showing any usual symptoms. After receiving advice from a specialist, his owners started giving him insulin injections at home to control the Diabetes. A few weeks later, Hector is in remission and no longer has to have daily insulin. 🐱🩺

Because we were able to check Hector's blood pressure and act on the results so quickly, he is now back to being a happy, healthy boy and his owners don't have to pay for lifelong treatment.

Hypertension or 'high blood pressure' in senior cats is common, with 1 in 5 cats over the age of 9 being affected. Often described as the 'silent killer', it can go undiagnosed for a long period of time before striking with potentially severe consequences. If left untreated, it can cause damage to vital organs such as eyes, kidney, heart and brain.🩸

It is really important for senior cats to have their blood pressure checked at least once a year or more frequently if they have kidney or thyroid problems.

We are so happy we could help Hector and his owners and we hope to educate other senior cat owners on the regular checks they should be having to live a long, happy life.

If you would like our nursing team to check your cats' blood pressure, please give us a call on 01264352323 or book online at www.strathmorevets.co.uk πŸ“ž

❗ This is your annual reminder not to leave mince pies or any other toxic treats for Santa where your dog can get them. ☠️

Raisins are highly toxic to dogs. If they eat any amount, they will need immediate vet attention.

This is a friendly reminder that not all pets will enjoy being dressed in silly Christmas costumes. Always ensure you buy suitable pet clothing such as jackets and boots for the winter.
