Only one month to go❗️ From 10 June 2024, cats in England will need to be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old.

🧑‍⚕️ Be sure to contact your vet to book in an appointment.

Microchipping will help reunite you with your cat if they ever become lost. Even indoor-only cats should be microchipped because they are also at risk of becoming lost.

Owners could face a fine of up to £500 if they do not microchip their cat by the required deadline.

Please please please watch out for misinformation posts for anything. This post has been provided by our main source of information regarding poisons in pets - the Veterinary Poisons Information Service and Animal PoisonLine - it's in the name

🌟Worried about your dog and rapeseed?🌟

At this time of year, we start to notice lots of posts circulating social media regarding rapeseed; these posts are shared extensively and can understandably worry many dog owners. The posts usually state that rapeseed is highly poisonous to dogs, and can cause signs including haemolytic anaemia, blindness, damaged nervous system, digestive disorders and breathing problems.

These posts are misinformation.

The signs mentioned are typically only seen in grazing animals, and most dogs actually remain asymptomatic after exposure to rapeseed. Dogs can develop gastrointestinal upset if they have ingested some of the plant, and there have been reports of skin reactions which resemble burns, but this is extremely rare and does not happen to every dog which comes into contact with it.

Why Pop up?
We often get asked by visitors to our shops whether we are permanent, or told how much they'd like to see us be there long term.
Pop ups allow makers to test products with the public, without committing long term to the overheads involved with permanent high street presence. It's great for businesses just starting out, and also those more established to get a cash injection to move them forwards.
We started running pop ups as we had found it difficult to find local craft fairs which were reliably productive enough for us at the time. With our pop ups, we do the set up, and your stock is in front of an audience for at least a week, if not longer, depending how long we are open, increasing the chances of finding your ideal audience. It takes the effort out of it for you as the maker allowing you to simultaneously concentrate on other ways of generating income.
We are passionate about selling handmade, and creating connections between makers and between the maker and customer. Our pop ups are now after 5 years gaining a loyal core customer base but by 'popping up' in town at prime shopping times of the year we meet new people every year and catch tourist trade too. We love what we do and we love the work we sell.
We can't wait to be open again in just over 2 weeks time, we hope you'll come along!

South West Blood Bikes volunteer Paul has shared the following story from a recent duty shift.

Last Friday I received a call asking if I could do an urgent run from Exeter to Bristol which I accepted. Around 40 minutes after receiving the call I arrived at the pick up point and the lady who had requested our help was called. She came to the desk and her first words were, "thank you so much you're a life saver"..... as I was writing out the receipt I asked what it was I was collecting she said it was a paediatric sample, I then finished filling in the receipt and handed it to her to sign as she handed it back she repeated "thank you so much your a life saver" ...I left there with a feeling of great pride that I was able to help and of how much it was appreciated!

I set off and made my way to the M5 and settled in for the run up to Bristol, as I headed up towards junction 24 a message board over the motorway said junction 20 to 21 delays 45 minutes, not much else to do but carry on.

Now the point of the second half of this message is l would like to say a huge thank you to all the drivers of cars, vans, trucks buses etc who moved over to allow me to filter through stationary or slow moving traffic as it’s possible that they helped to save a life by making it possible for me to deliver the sample as fast as legally possible, so again a huge thank you 👏👏

It would be nice if people could share that bit of the message, so that motorists would know that they may be helping to save a life by letting Blood bikes through!

South West Blood Bikes are based in Devon and you can found out how to volunteer for them using the link below.

Let's talk about why it's worth shopping handmade.
If you think of every pound you spend as a vote you cast, would you think more about who you give it to?
We completely understand that especially in the current environment it is incredibly hard not to want a bargain, an offer only a large company can potentially supply, or the need to save a few extra pennies. We ourselves have felt this keenly this year and completely understand that this option isn't for everyone. However we would still encourage you to come down to our shop, browsers are very welcome at the Carlisle Creative!
Every item in our shops has been designed and made by someone from your community. When you buy from them you support their family, you help pay their bills, you buy their kids school uniform. Beyond that you are supporting a dream. A dream spent in long days making items of their own creation, months in the imagining and development.
We aren't asking you to buy wholly independent or handmade, it's just not possible and we see that. But when you can, try it. Every penny in our makers pockets is a penny back into your local community. It keeps this City and its people going and we would really love to see the shops of Carlisle busy this Christmas.

An announcement yesterday that the Competition Commission is looking into the costs of vet care in the U.K. has predictably led to a huge amount of vet bashing in the press and online.

It is true that veterinary treatment isn’t cheap, no good health care is, but it is also true that the vast majority of veterinary staff have absolutely no influence over the fees set.

But it is them that read the awful comments about how they don’t care about pets, just profit.

And deal face-to-face with stressed and aggressive clients demanding discounts or even free care, whose upset has been fuelled by reports like these.

If you choose to take on the responsibility of a pet, paying for veterinary attention is part of that commitment.

You can plan for problems by taking out insurance, opting away from breeds with predictable and costly problems like flat faced dogs or having an emergency savings fund or credit card.

And if you really are struggling, don’t shout at vet staff, speak to them! We are always willing to help and advise where we can because, contrary to apparent popular opinion, pets are our passion.

If you want to have your say, both the general public and the veterinary profession, you can do so here;

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-respond-to-the-veterinary-services-market-for-pets-review

And please do! All opinions are welcome and valid when given in this way…

… but not when verbally abusing a caring and currently extremely stretched profession online.

From today, vets' governing body, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has changed the code of conduct regarding dispensing of antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals and antiparasitics, including topical, eye and ear ointments. This is to try to reduce resistance to these products by ensuring they are given at the correct dose for the correct length of time. In all but exceptional circumstances, pets will need to have had a clinical examination before we prescribe any of these products. For more information, the guidelines can be found here.

Clawdius Lucifer happy and relaxed after his annual health check and vaccination! This is why I do home visits - cats are so much happier at home than being transported to a practice. 😊

HU***NG HOUNDS - It’s not always what it seems
Some dogs do and some dogs don’t, but if you have a dog that humps at the most inopportune times it can be downright embarrassing or annoying. Other dogs, other people, visitors, toys, cushions, furniture, anything that can be mounted and clung to may be fair game. As people, it’s natural to assume that this behaviour is of a sexual nature, that our dogs must be oversexed, sexually frustrated or the all-too-common incorrect belief that our dogs are just trying to be “dominant”.
Hu***ng, like many other dog behaviours does not always have a simple reason. It can be a complex behaviour which is usually emotionally or socially based. Looking for what may be triggering the behaviour and finding the cause should always be the first step before finding ways to change a behaviour. The solutions will depend on the cause. It may be finding ways to reduce stress or anxiety levels, increasing mental stimulation, teaching calm behaviours to prevent over arousal, ensuring your dog is getting enough sleep, using management or in some cases a veterinary check up to rule out any medical causes.
When hu***ng is antagonizing another dog or person or causing frustration, discomfort or harm in any way, then obviously this behaviour needs to be immediately addressed, but sometimes we may need to ask ourselves – is it really something we need to stop our dogs from doing just because as people we see it as socially unacceptable? Is it a harmless way of relieving stress or anxiety after a difficult day or a way to expend pent up energy that is not causing anyone harm? If we prevent this, correct it, redirect this or at worst punish this behaviour are we removing a harmless natural outlet and risking another unwanted behaviour taking its place?
Behaviour is not always the way it looks on the surface. Look for the underlying cause, look at what may be triggering the behaviour before deciding how to change it.

Happy Earth Day! My Abbie has been poorly this week, but she was still able to come out to the garden with me (because her favourite place is by my side) while on her drip. There's a lot to be said for fresh air and sunshine to help the medicine do its job. She's on the mend now😊

A Happy Story

This is Pippa. Her owner was worried because she was slowing down and her tummy seemed to be growing bigger. A clinical examination and an ultrasound revealed an 8cm lump on her spleen. The spleen was removed at Firth Veterinary Centre 2 days later. The mass was a rare type of tumour, but it was benign and surgical removal should be all the treatment she needs. Her wound has healed and she should carry on living a normal life, thanks to a combination of her owner's vigilance, a quick diagnosis and some skilled surgery. It's lovely when a plan comes together 🐶❤️

Comfortable consultations

My name is Liz Shepherd, I qualified as a vet in 1997, and have been in mixed practice ever since. Over the last 23 years, I have wondered how to improve pets’ (and owners’) experience of a trip to the vet. Cats and dogs don’t like waiting in waiting rooms, most cats never go anywhere nice in a car, and nearly all detest the experience of being put into a carrier for this trip. So, I decided to bring the consulting room to the patient by starting The Visit Vet.

I have a particular interest in preventive health care, especially of our older pets. Early diagnosis and treatment can make an enormous difference to an animal’s quality of life, and it's not just medicines that help. Small alterations in their diet or environment can reduce the likelihood of certain conditions developing, and seeing animals in their own home can give a more complete picture of what may be causing a problem.

My aim in starting The Visit Vet is to provide an excellent standard of care for pets in their own homes. If you require assistance to handle your pet, please let me know, as I have some appointments available every week together with a Registered Veterinary Nurse. Extended consultations are also available, if your pet has more complicated needs, or if we need to do some extra tests at the time. I also encourage owners to ask questions about their animal’s condition, so that you can really understand it and do the best for your pet after the consultation. As vets, we only start the healing process, the nursing and home care they receive is a large part of completing the recovery.

If your pet requires emergency care, surgery or hospitalisation, I will refer you to Coomara Veterinary Practice, where your pet will receive the care they need. I worked there for 13 years and know that they will give your pet the attention they need until they are ready for discharge from the clinic.
