Mental stimulus is equally important as physical exercise to ensure a well balanced and contented dog.. Meet Murphy, rescued 4 weeks ago from Almost Home. Although 11 months he was very immature and inexperienced.. We had to go back to the basics..
Here he is doing his daily obedience and recall training 🐢😁😁

🀯Your dog is not being rude or impolite if he growls or barks at someone.

Your dog is being an EXCELLENT communicator!

Your dog is telling you that he is not happy and uncomfortable in a situation. By punishing/ scolding him for doing this may just suppress the behaviour. The next time your dog feels unsafe he could remember getting into 'trouble' for the growling behaviour and can possibly just escalate into a bite.

The dog learns that something unpleasant happens when he displays that behaviour, therefore that behaviour doesn’t work.

😐If your dog is trying to avoid something or someone, DO NOT FORCE the issue as it could backfire and cause an aggressive response.

Think about this for a second...

You don't know me. Imagine I came up to you and tried to hug and kiss you.
You would first move away and try and avoid me, maybe put your arm out at the same time to try and create a barrier between us.
I ignore your signals and continue to intrude in your space and force a hug and a kiss.
You shout at me and then someone smacks YOU on the head for being rude to me...

πŸ•Allow your dog to have a CHOICE with who he/ she wants or does not want to interact with.

By putting them into a position that creates reactivity is putting them into a position to fail.

🐾Setting your dog up for success means being your dogs advocate, and helping them cope in a world they see very differently to us.

This is Ronnie a lovely 6mth old Cocker Spaniel. As with most pups the owners were experiencing pulling on the lead, recall and some minor behavioural issues in the house. Initial visit focused on laying down some more rigid rules, boundaries and mental exercises so Ronnie was more focused on them. Short lead walk showed he was more in control than the owners. Advice and guidance helped improve their interaction with their pup πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘. Work in progress πŸ™‚

This is the lovely 9mth old Pyper. I was initially introduced to her by her young owner at 10wks to assist with establishing good boundaries, obedience and socialisation.. Everything was going well until at 8mths Pyper was attacked by another dog. After that she became nervous, anxious, pulling on the lead and reacted aggressively to other dogs. Free running became very limited. After a couple of postive training sessions she and her owner have found a new confidence πŸ˜πŸ‘
