Want to be able to make friends with new dogs when you meet them? You can signal that you’re friendly by using canine body language!

We often hear that you’re supposed to offer a dog the back of your hand to sniff, but the body language of this move is actually quite threatening. When we lean forward to offer our hand, we’re facing the dog square on, looming over them, making eye contact and invading their space. All of those signals combine into an intimidating message, and as a result many dogs will become uncomfortable when greeted in this fashion. Confident dogs will usually respond with a couple of signals like turning their head away, yawning, or licking their nose, which means they’d like the human to ease up a bit. Shy or anxious dogs will back away, cower, or even growl, snap or bite.

The best way to greet a dog is to either stand side on to them and invite them over by patting your leg or calling to them, or crouch down on the ground and let them come to you. This method ensures that it’s the dog’s choice to come and say hello – they’re moving up to you, rather than you moving up to them.

If the dog chooses not to approach, it means that they don’t want to say hello. It’s important that you respect that choice, and leave them be. If you’re going to be spending some time with the dog, be patient and hang back – the best way to win the trust of a shy dog is to avoid putting pressure on them to interact. Move slowly, blink your eyes a lot to avoid staring, and don’t speak loudly. If they approach to sniff you, don’t pet them right away. Let them sniff, then when they’re finished move away from them and try inviting them closer again.

Best of luck making some new doggie friends Dog Geeks! We’d love to hear how being conscious of your body language has helped you greet dogs, or if you’ve ever won the trust of a shy dog by being patient and avoiding pressuring them.

This situation could have been avoided!
Yet again unfortunately this dog will end up paying the ultimate price for a situation the guardian hasn't managed effectively!!

I'm afraid the blame for this lies firmly at the guardian door, he/she had the dog in a situation where it clearly couldn't cope and was unable to process the environment and as a result was very over threshold!

Seeing things like this does make me incredibly angry as all people will remember is the breed! Unfortunately for the bully as a breed has a bad public perception and people have preconceived ideas or theories about the breed and all this irresponsible guardian has done is further cement the public perception. I would imagine after this goes viral people will be calling for the bully breed to classed as a "dangerous dog".

This could not be further from the truth as back in the 70's it was the doberman 80's was the rottweiler 90's was the staffy and now this. What all these breeds have in common is people! It's about time people stop blaming the breed and start blaming the irresponsible people that have them!

Unfortunately these breeds are seen as a "status symbol' and as such attract people who want to be classed the same.

Finally I think the police rider deserves recognition as he remained calm in what was an incredibly challenging environment for the horse.

I am so proud of how far this team has come.
Over the last 3 months we have taken a very nervous dog who is under a DCN, that used to react at the first sight of a dog to now being able to go to a park and sit and watch other dogs.

When your dog is reactive toward other dogs, what they're asking for is DISTANCE!, they're not looking for a dust up or trying to be the ALPHA! They're scared and screaming at the top of their lungs that they're uncomfortable with the environment or situation. Your dog has learnt over time that if it does this, then that makes the scary thing go away! and the more opportunity they get to do this behaviour, the better at it they become! So from your dogs perspective, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Studies show that 90% of reactivity is based in FEAR!
Aggression is not a personality trait. It's how your dog responds to the stimulus!

Archie has done so well and has come so far, and we are now starting to change his emotional response to dogs. He is able to look at the dog, remain calm and this is what we've been reinforcing!
This was our final session with the dog warden present to have the DCN amended and show the progress Archie has made.

This course has been very complex at times due to his past learning history, but it proves beyond a doubt that it doesn't matter what happened in the past. We achieved this without having to resort to any aversive methods or equipment! This was all done through modern progressive scientific based training methods.

The power of using positive reward based methods is that you're giving the dog a choice and enabling the dog to predict the outcome by structuring the environment to ensure the dog remains under threshold and therefore able to process the environment around them and allowing them to communicate how they want to proceed.

I have never nor will I ever use any aversive methods or equipment to train a dog. There is absolutely no need for them, and all they teach the dog is that you're unpredictable and it causes more undesirable behaviours in the long run.

If you're struggling with how your dog reacts around other dogs and people and you'd like my help, then please just send me a wee text or message the page..

Together, we can make your dog the best dog they can be!

Morning Everyone,

Can I please ask those of you who have sessions booked starting this month to settle the invoice ASAP please.

Here we have the brilliant pup Dougie.
Dougie gets a wee bit over excited when seeing other dogs and that can lead to his communication being clumsy.

So we have been working hard on teaching him that he can have access to any dog so long as he is calm. This was our 2nd session and he is starting to make very clear calm choices around dogs.

This has been done by us carefully managing his environment to ensure he is under threshold and then the choices he makes are the clear calm choices we have taught him.

There is not a slip lead, shock collar or any other aversive methods used. This is all based on behavioural analysis and science.
Positive reward training is a fantastic tool to teach dogs the behaviours needed to help them interact with the environment around them.

If you're interested in showing your dog how to remain calm around other dogs then please just send me a wee text or message the page and together we can make your dog the best dog they can be.

The Spoon Theory for Dogs

The Spoon Theory is used to describe what it is like to live with a chronic/invisible illness such as arthritis, fibromylagia, lupus or endometriosis. People with chronic illnesses have limited energy which is represented in spoons. It was created by Christine Miserandino. Each unit of energy for the day is measured in a spoon. Some activities cost more spoons than others. Those with chronic illness, if they do too much, they will not have enough spoons for the rest of the day.

For those who are healthy, on a regular work day they start off with 12 spoons and on a day off, they start with 19 spoons. A person with chronic illness can start their day minus 4 spoons, starting only with 8 spoons, and if they have a bad pain flare, they will only have 4 spoons to go through the day.

How does this relate to our dogs? Dogs also have limited energy, even more so if they are puppies, adolescents (going through developmental fear periods), seniors, have behaviour issues or have chronic illnesses/are sick.

What happens if your dog only has 12 spoons a day?

🥄 If your dog did not have a good night's sleep take away 1 spoon
🥄 If a stranger touches your dog take away 2 to 4 spoons (depending on the dog)
🥄 If there is a thunderstorm take away 3 to 6 spoons (depending on the dog)
🥄 If your dog goes for lots of exercise, a big run, hike or any performance activity take away 4 to 5 spoons
🥄 If your dog is fearful, instantly take away 4 spoons
🥄 If your dog sees the vet take away 4 spoons
🥄 If your dog sees an unfamiliar dog, growls and lunges, take away 4 spoons
🥄 If your dog was training take away 3 spoons

Depending on how many spoons your dog has for the day and used throughout the day, they will need to have time to rest and recover. For example if you have a puppy, plan for them to have a big morning and then rest for the evening. If your dog has arthritis, then don't take away all their spoons by having them go for a big jog, they will have no energy left for the day.

The difference is that we can control how we spend our daily spoons, but we also control how our dogs spend their spoons.

Ruben, practicing the triangle game around distractions. There was an awful lot for him to do here, the dog was off lead and there was a ball chucker. He did an awesome job here, remained calm and focused on his guardian.

March has limited availability left so book now and secure your spot.

Together we can make your dog the best dog they can be.
