We at Wallace Vets are delighted to announce that we can now offer laparoscopic (keyhole) spays for our canine patients in our Arbroath practice!

A laparoscopic spay is a far less invasive operation with a faster recovery time when compared with a traditional spay. The benefits include:

🐾 Less pain after surgery due to being much less invasive. The tissues are handled very gently and not pulled/traumatised as with a traditional spay
🐾Smaller incisions
🐾Faster recovery time (3 days)
🐾No external stitches to chew
🐾Faster healing times
🐾Fewer post-operative complications
🐾Clearer view and magnification for the surgeon during the operation

Keyhole surgery is especially advantageous for young, energetic dogs who can be difficult to keep rested for 10-14 days post-surgery.

Gorgeous Freya, the 1 year old Staffie, was one of our first lap spay doggos and, as you can see from her wee smiley face, she was pretty happy about it!

May is the month to celebrate Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVNs) - the dedicated "beating heart" of the veterinary world. These professionals provide the essential expertise, compassion, and tireless devotion that keep practices running and patients thriving!

Our RVNs are far more than just assistants; they are multi-skilled experts who balance medical precision with genuine empathy:

🩺Medical Marvels: They act as anaesthetists, pharmacists, phlebotomists, and radiographers, assisting in complex surgeries and providing life-saving aftercare.

🩺Patient Advocates: They ensure every animal feels safe, transforming stressful visits into calm, reassuring experiences.

🩺Educators & Empaths: They serve as a vital resource for pet owners, offering expert advice, patient explanations, and a sympathetic shoulder during tough times.

🩺Operational All-Stars: From managing the wards and assisting in surgery to handling reception duties and administrative tasks, they ensure the practice hums perfectly.

Beyond clinical support, our nurses run their own essential clinics, providing hands-on care such as:

🩺Preventative Care: Microchipping, vaccinations, and weigh/worm checks.

🩺Technical Procedures: Nail clips, tick removal, and post-operative checks.

Our "dream team" of RVNs are genuine heroes who work tirelessly for animals and their humans alike. Their unparalleled skill and profound compassion create a world of positive change. Next time you visit, please join us in saying a huge thank you to these incredible individuals🥰 🐾

While we often focus on the dangers of smoking with regard to our own health, our pets are frequently the silent victims of both second and thirdhand smoke.

Because pets live close to the floor and groom themselves frequently, they don't just breathe in toxins—they ingest them through their fur, bedding & other soft furnishings. This exposure significantly increases the risk of respiratory issues, oral cancers and lymphoma in cats, while dogs face higher rates of nasal and lung cancer, as well as other respiratory problems related to smoke inhilation, depending on their breed's snout length. Even small pets like birds are highly sensitive, often developing severe respiratory distress from trace amounts of smoke.

To protect your best friend/s, always smoke outdoors, wash your hands before petting them, wash their bedding regularly and keep your home’s air clean.

If you're concerned that your pet may be at risk, or if they have any health issues that are worrying you, please contact us on:- 01382 549600📞🐾

Some of our wonderful Vet team had a great day out in Edinburgh today for a meeting with XLVets.

XLVets is a cooperative of independent veterinary practices across the UK sharing knowledge, ideas and experiences to help us continue to provide the very best service that we can.

We at Wallace Vets are extremely proud to remain an independent practice and this awesome cooperative helps support us to remain as such.

We're excited to hear all of the exciting new ideas that Fraser, Emma, April, Andrew, Silvia & Sally bring back to practice with them🥰🐾

If you’ve ever walked into our practice feeling stressed, worried, or even overjoyed with a new pet, you know that our reception team is the first to offer a kind word and a helping hand.

They are so much more than "just" receptionists. On any given day, they are:

🐾The calm in the storm: Managing emergency calls with steady voices
🐾The ultimate organisers: Juggling complex schedules to make sure every pet gets seen
🐾The shoulder to cry on: Offering genuine empathy during the toughest moments
🐾The translators: Bridging the gap between veterinary jargon and pet parent peace of mind

A vet receptionist is the only person who can process a payment, comfort a grieving owner, answer a three-line phone system, and give a treat to a Great Dane—all at the same time.

To our incredible front-of-house team: Thank you! The rest of our team couldn't do what they do without the strong foundations you build every single day - we appreciate you massively🥰❤

How handsome is little Oakley?🥹🥰

This wee guy is a 2 month old Fox Red Labrador who popped into our Broughty Ferry practice for his vaccinations last week & was the bravest of little men! We know the vets can be a scary new environment for your pets to overcome, with lots of new sights, sounds & smells, and although a teeny bit worried to begin with, Oakley took it all in his stride!

If you've got a new puppy that you'd like to socialise, feel free to pop them into our reception areas whenever you're passing for some treats & cuddles to get them used to the veterinary environment in a positive way!

Our fabulous nursing team also offer desensitisation appointments which are specifically tailored towards helping worried pets feel less anxious about their trips to the vets. If this is something you are currently struggling with, contact us on 01382 549 600 to chat about booking one of these appointments, which are free to clients on our Essentials, Unlimited, and Consult plans🥰🐾

These two gentle giants popped into our Broughty Ferry practice yesterday & absolutely stole the show!

MacDougal was booked in to see our pawsome Vet, Rory, and naturally, his little brother McTavish had to come along for moral support and to make sure he wasn't missing out on anything!!

These beautiful boys are brothers who get on like a house on fire and fill their mum and dads lives with lots of love and laughter!

Would you believe that MacTavish, the ever so slightly smaller of the two, is only 6 months old and weighs a whopping 41kg?! Big brother MacDougal is fast approaching his 2nd birthday and currently weighs just under 60kg!!

Great Danes are gentle, sensitive giants who truly believe they’re lap dogs. Despite their size, these "big softies" are often scared of their own shadows.

Owning one means dodging weaponized tails that clear coffee tables and surviving heavy "lean-hugs" that test your balance and muscular integrity. They may be clumsy, drooly, and unaware of their massive stature, but they pack a lifetime of love into every giant, goofy moment🥰🐾

We recently discovered that baby Corgi's are basically born looking like teeny tiny adult dogs & we are obsessed!!

Adorable Miso here is a prime example of this! At only 15 weeks old, she already looks like a miniature version of her grown up Aristocratic ancestors & looks wise beyond her years!!🥹🥰

Here are some fun facts that make Corgi's the legendary little loafs they are:-

🐾The Ultimate Comedians: Known as the "clowns" of the dog world, Corgis have a goofy sense of humor. They’ll do anything for a laugh (and a treat!)
🐾Einstein-Level Intelligence: Ranked in the top 15 smartest breeds, they are incredibly quick learners who thrive on puzzles and new tricks
🐾Fiercely Loyal: They are "velcro dogs" who form deep, unbreakable bonds. If you move to the next room, expect your fluffy shadow to follow!
🐾Small But Mighty: Originally bred as cattle herders, they are brave, sturdy, stubborn and surprisingly athletic. They’re always up for an adventure!
🐾The "Perma-Smile": With their big ears and happy expressions, Corgis are natural mood-boosters who bring infectious joy to every home
🐾The "Corgi Glitter": Corgis have a thick double coat, which means they shed... a lot. You’ll find "Corgi glitter" (fur) on your clothes, your couch, and probably in your morning coffee - frequent brushing is a must!

Warning: Extreme levels of cuteness overload incoming!

Meet the newest (and sleepiest) members of the vet-visit club!

These 6 week old Ragdoll-cross sweethearts visited us for their first checkup and, safe to say, they were totally unphased by the experience! In fact, most of them decided a vet table makes an excellent nap spot and didn't even realise they'd left the house!

With those stunning eyes and silky, beautiful coloured coats, we were absolutely obsessed. Is there anything better than teeny tiny kitten toe beans? We think not🥰🐾

Roses are red,
And violets are blue,
But a bit slobbery kiss,
Is our favourite "I love you".

Your cat is a heart-throb,
Your dog is a star,
Even if they won't
Get into the car.

From the hisses to kisses
And tail-wags so sweet,
Our patients are truly
The ones we can't beat.

So here’s to the fluff-balls
Who steal every heart—
We’re just happy to play
A small, healthy part!

From us to you, Happy Valentines Day! We'd love to see pictures of the gorgeous fur babies you've spent your Valentines Day with in the comments below🥰❤️

We had a bit of a "wild" weekend in our Broughty Ferry practice! Look who blew in to see us...

This beautiful wee Puffin was found by a kind member of the public after being blown off course by the recent stormy weather. Since our practice isn't exactly the typical coastal puffin hangout, he was definitely a long way from home!

Our team was absolutely delighted to meet him — it’s not every day we get to see such an iconic & adorable seabird up close. After a thorough check-over by our team to make sure he was healthy and hydrated, he was collected by the Scottish SPCA. They will provide expert rehabilitation to get his strength back up before releasing him safely back into the wild where he belongs.

If you ever find a bird or wild animal that seems displaced, exhausted, or far outside its normal habitat after a storm, here's what you can do to help:-

🐾Lend a helping hand: Carefully transport them to your local vet practice where they can receive the care they need

🐾Call the experts: Contact the Scottish SPCA animal helpline for advice, rescue and, if possible, rehabilitation & release

Safe travels, little guy! We’re rooting for a speedy return to the cliffs🥰
