WHOSE WALK IS IT ANYWAY?

Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through new scenery and exciting smells after being cooped up in the same place all day, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged or yanked along at a fast pace.

I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop, sniff and explore the environment.

Dogs largely perceive their world through scent and it’s how they collect and process information to help the world make sense.

Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk really isn’t being fair.. As much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.

Allowing dogs to choose when to stop and sniff provides so many benefits – increases self-confidence, promotes calmness, lowers stress and anxiety levels, lowers pulse rates, reduces cognitive decline in older dogs and provides important mental and environmental enrichment.

Make time for a slow sniffing walk when you can, where your dog is allowed to choose which direction to go and allowed time to just investigate, interpret, process the environment and follow wherever their nose leads them.

It may take far more time and patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that particular blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it – after all, whose walk is it anyway?

It has been such a busy week I totally forgot to update everyone about our Christmas charity collection. Thanks to everyone who donated! It is all a massive help. We filled an entire trolly of dog and cat food and dropped it off at the Armagh Food Bank. 🥰

Good news - relief from the cold. Milder air moves in this weekend. Temperatures could reach 12/13C on Monday afternoon.

As much as the frost is beautiful it’s too cold for majority of the dogs. My car has been consistently reading between-3 and -6 all day and no higher. It’s giving -5/-6 until Friday. That means for the rest of the week all senior dogs, all dogs with recent illness, all dogs with recurring/chronic issues and brachycephalic dogs should miss their walks. All other dogs can continue with coats for short walks if owners feel ok with it. However as many of you know my limit is -5/-6 for taking dogs out unless they’re a cold climate breed. If we’re hitting -5/-6 during the day the walks will have to stop. We will be doing them later in the day for the rest of the week in the hopes that it will get up to 0 🙈. 🐶 that is us back to porridge now folks. It gives quite a cold week so Walks will be judged on how well the dogs are coping in the weather. If they aren’t enjoying it, we will cut the walks short. Please can everybody leave out coats this week? 🙈

I just want to say a massive thank you to all my clients and their lovely pets who keep me busy. They say only 50% of small businesses last to the five year mark. And I am ecstatic and humbled that we are now coming into our fifth year. If it wasn’t for my loyal customers, I would not be celebrating this milestone. Thank you all for seeing the love and care that I have for your animals and the hard work and dedication that the business thrives on. I am truly honoured to have such loyal customers.
