Managing Restricted Exercise

After surgery, we often give you a long list of things your dog can't do for 10-14 days post-op - no walking, running, jumping or bouncing!

So what can you do with your dog to stop them from getting cabin fever?

Think of activities that will mentally stimulate your dog as this can be as tiring as physical activity:
🐾 Scatter feeding or puzzle feeding kibble at mealtimes instead of using a bowl
🐾 Wet food can be frozen in a Kong toy - licking is a soothing behaviour for dogs
🐾 Hiding their treats in boxes or around the room to encourage them to sniff them out
🐾 Train low-energy tricks such as
🐶 Touch - teaching your dog to touch their nose to different objects
🐶 Find X - teaching your dog to identify a specific item
🐶 Middle - teaching your dog to come and stand between your legs

Comment with photos of ideas you've had to keep your dog occupied!

Miss Nelly was in recently for her puppy vaccinations with our vet Carrie and nurse Gemma.

She was very brave for her vaccines and she is one of our newest members of the Healthy Pet Club 💜

After her vaccines she had a little snooze as it is a big day out for a small pup 🐾

Barking Mad!

Sometimes your dog giving a quick woof can be very useful - they may be telling us that they need to go out. Other times, it isn't so useful, such as barking every time someone walks by the house.

It can be very tempting to tell your dog off for barking at the window or the gate in an attempt to get them to be quiet.

🐾 Your dog sees you as a member of their family, so when we shout at them to be quiet they can actually see it as you joining in, leading to them thinking shouting at people going past is a fun family activity!

Try distraction - squeak a toy and move your dog away from the window or gate to engage in a different activity. If possible, teach a "quiet" or "bed" command, especially if you have frequent visitors.

🐾 Hi Brynn 🐾

How cute is Brynn?! He came to see us recently for his annual vaccines and he just had to strike a pose before he went home!

Brynn is a clever boy and is on our Healthy Pet Club so his vaccines and flea and worm treatment is included in a simple monthly payment. Poor Brynn suffers from allergies as well and he gets his medicine discounted on the Healthy Pet Club too!

Why not be like Brynn and spread the cost of routine preventatives plus get a nice discount on long term medication, consults and dental work!

Let's hear the love for the sweetest boy!

One of the most common complaints we hear from dog owners is that their dog is a fussy eater.

When this happens suddenly or is accompanied by other symptoms it may be due to a medical issue; but sometimes it can be behavioural too!

When dogs reach 6-12 months they enter The Teenage Years! They may test their boundaries by pretending they can't hear when you ask them to do something and refusal to eat their normal food can be part of that.

The key is consistency - try not to give in! Don't scold your dog for disobeying you - opt for a time out and try again approach. If they refuse their food, take it up and offer it again in an hour.

Don't forget, if there are other signs of illness such as vomiting or diarrhoea then it's better to give us a call for advice!

🖤🧡 Double Trouble 🖤🧡

These two absolute cuties are Champo (tabby) and her kitten Patch (tortie).

They joined us in the practice today for their vaccines to ensure they are protected against feline enteritis, flu and FeLV!
They were as good as gold for Vet Carrie!

Show some love ❤️ for this adorable duo!

🐾 Tabby 🐾

Everyone meet Tabby who was in last week to be spayed 🐱
And sure what would you be at after surgery, some lovely painkillers and a good breakfast than making biscuits ❤️

Neutering cats is so important as it prevents unwanted litters of kittens and reduces roaming. Neutered cats are less likely to get into scraps and therefore less likely to contract and spread nasty viruses such as FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukaemia Virus)!

We wish you a speedy recovery from surgery, Tabby ☺️ ...and enjoy those biscuits 😉

Everyone loves a cute puppy but it takes time and effort to nurture a well-balanced adult dog!

🐾 Socialisation window - Did you know that between 3-14 weeks is when a puppy is most open to learning new things!

🐾 Physical activity expends excess energy. Play that requires reasoning and problem solving counts as mental stimulation and is just as tiring!

🐾 Short, frequent, positive and repetitive training sessions will deliver the best results!

If you need any support with your new addition please don't hesitate to contact us - one of our vets or nurses will be happy to offer advice!

🤍🖤 Puppy Love 🖤🤍

This striking young man is Pongo! He came to see us for his first vaccine this week and spent time with both Vet Rebekah and Nurse Gemma!

Rebekah gave Pongo a thorough health check, his first vaccine and microchip while Gemma discussed many aspects of puppy care such as pet insurance, our Healthy Pet Club, parasite prevention, diet, dental care and socialisation!

Pongo was super excited to explore his very own 🐾 puppy welcome pack 🐾 which was the cherry on top after his first appointment with us!

After all the excitement he had a little lie down before having a few more cuddles at reception and heading off home!

Zazu was in recently to have surgery on her foot to keep the area clean our nurses placed a bandage ❤️

Bandages need to be kept clean and dry at home. A wet dirty bandage can introduce infection and cut off circulation to the limb.

If your pet needs to wear a bandage place a waterproof covering on when going outside, place a cone to avoid your pet interfering with the bandage.

Monitor the bandage for any signs of it slipping swelling.

If you notice any issues contact the practice for advice.

🧡 Beautiful Sadie 🧡

Sadie made herself right at home in the consult room yesterday when she came in for her health check and vaccines! Isn't she absolutely stunning!

She looks quite small in her photos but she's actually 7.5kg(!) - can anyone guess what breed she is?

It's quite rare to see a female ginger cat with about 80% of ginger cats being male! We'd love you to share some photos if you're lucky enough to have one!

Stressed or anxious cats can sometimes start to exhibit some concerning behaviours.

🐾 Over-grooming
Cats can groom too much and lose hair because they're itchy due to parasites or allergies but sometimes it can be down to stress. We often find that cats pulling their hair out from stress don't respond to the usual treatments for an itchy cat!

🐾 Cystitis
Some cats can develop what seems to be a recurrent bladder infection from being stressed. This is often not a true infection and doesn't require antibiotics. Testing a urine sample for infection and crystals along with asking lots of questions about possible stressors will help us to tell the difference!

Cats are very sensitive creatures so if you know there's a stressful time ahead such as building work or a new baby on the way it's good to prepare early!

Hi there, Frank!

Frank is a little 3 month old Degu who came in this week to be neutered - all 139 grams of him!

Neutering male rodents prevents accidental litters and may help with any hormone-induced tendencies towards aggression.

The key to successful surgery in teeny patients like Frank is keeping them warm under anaesthetic so we had fluffy blankets, heat mats and hot hands at the ready to make sure he was nice and toasty throughout!

We wish you a speedy recovery, Frank!

Meet Iarla!

Iarla joined us in the practice today for his monthly puppy weigh-in appointment with one of our veterinary nurses.

At 6 months old and 25kg he's a big handsome boy and we just love watching him grow! (and getting our daily dose of puppy snugs along the way!)

Can anyone tell what breed he is from this beautiful photo?

Lots of things can stress our feline friends, from a new cat in the neighborhood or the sound of the hoover to moving house!

An anxious cat will:
🐾 Stay low to the ground
🐾 Have flat ears
🐾 Have wide eyes and big pupils

A very worried cat will:
🐾 Arch their back
🐾 Make themselves look bigger with their hair standing on end

Cats like to be certain they have secure hiding places during worrying times - they prefer high up places! They may prefer to be left alone rather than be reassured until they're certain the threat has passed!

⭐ Minnie ⭐

Minnie has had a pretty hard time the last few weeks! At only a year old her hormones have played havoc with her leading to lots of visits to the clinic and multiple procedures including a rather impromptu spay!

This hasn't put her off at all as she's had lots of fuss and attention from the vets and nurses ❤️

We're so glad you feel better now Minnie!

🐮 Hello World 🐮

Vet Carrie was called out to assist with the delivery of this beautiful calf last week!

Mum was having a bit of a hard time and needed a c-section - we can definitely see why! This "little lady" is absolutely huge!

How do bats know where to fly? They wing it!

This little guy found himself indoors quite by accident and the person who found him brought him in to be checked over before releasing him back outside at dusk! He was in fine fettle and even let us check out his teeny tiny teeth!

Bats actually use sound or 'echolocation' to navigate and hunt. While our wee friend looks like he's baring his teeth he's actually using echolocation (inaudible to people) to figure out what's going on!

If you find a bat you can call the Bat Conservation Trust for advice (https://www.bats.org.uk/) or if the bat looks poorly we are more than happy to assist!

Travel Safely!

Just a gentle reminder to clients bringing cats or small animals to the clinic to ensure they are in a secure pet carrier.

While our dogs may relish a trip out in the car, this is often not the case for cats who are less experienced travellers.

The noises of the car and clinic can be very unsettling, leading to pets trying to escape from their carrier.

Handy tip: if you're struggling to get your pet into the carrier at home, try reversing them in!
