A Hay Steamer developed by us, for our Horses

The ACPAT Veterinary Physiotherapist

My name is Ania Williamson and I am an ACPAT Veterinary Physiotherapist as well as a Senior Chartered Physiotherapist with over 10 years of clinical experience. Based in the Peak District, I am fortunate to have my horses at home and enjoy competing in Affiliated Dressage and training my daughter's pony.

My horses are stabled over-night in winter and last year my horse developed an allergic reaction to hay dust. It took him a long time to recover and I vowed that the following winter I would prevent it happening again.

This led me to look into hay steamers and I quickly realised that I didn’t have the budget for the commercially available units. After a detailed review of the available research, we decided to make our own hay steamer to test the concept, and it worked – no more cough!

The Engineer

Hi there - I'm Paul and I'm originally a Mechanical Engineer but I've been working in International Business Development and Technology Development for about 20 years. My home office is in the barn just across from Rubin's stable. I could hear him coughing all day when he was in - I'm asthmatic myself and I felt terrible about it.

When Ania had done her research I looked at what the market offered and there were some clear opportunities to use some simple engineering principles to develop something that made sense, both technically and for our budget.

It took more than 6 months to develop and test to our satisfaction and we've got a lot of ideas for improvements and features, but the Breatheasy is ready to share!

Many thanks to the our engineering friends in Aerospace who provided guidance on the right materials to use in the steamer. The new stainless elements were developed with our good friends at Vortex - makers of indestructible sports exhaust systems for racing, offroad and military vehicles!
