Heal with Harry is a pet therapy service that helps people to build their confidence around dogs through 1-1 therapy sessions with our registered therapy dog, Harry. Our aim is to help you overcome your fear through teaching you how to behave and interact with dogs, and through learning about canine body language. We also offer additional pet services including: pet therapy to support mental healt

h and wellbeing, pop-in visits and dog walks to assist pets whilst their owners are away,
puppy support for families who need some help with their new furry friend, and pet chaperoning for those who want their companion to a part of their wedding day.

The new term marks the beginning of Heal with Harry's dog safety workshops. These interactive sessions teach children how to stay safe around dogs and help them to understand canine body language, but most of all its lots of fun.

We’ve been looking after Buddy all week & even though his family tell me he can be mischievous he’s been the goodest boy with us. He has gained the acolade of DOG OF THE WEEK … well done Buddy 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😄

Well that’s a wrap… what a wonderful year its been at St Charles.

This year we have spent a lot of time with year 6 and I feel honoured to have been a small part of their journey. Harry and I wish them all the best moving up to their new schools and we look forward to seeing everyone in their new classes in the new term.

Why do I limit Harry's hours?

As much as Harry loves the attention and fuss, the work of a therapy dog can be an overload on the senses. You might be surprised to hear that some therapy dogs feel exhausted after a therapy session. I haven't found this to be the case with Harry but his welfare and the welfare of the people we visit are my primary consideration. An over stimulated dog is not helpful to anyone.

Therefore I limit his hours to 3 hours per day. This would actually be a busy day for him so 3 hours would be his maximum working day, our usual day may consist of 2 visits. I also build into this a wind down sniffy walk after our visits, this is a dog's form of relaxation.

An average dog has the intelligence of a 2-3 year old human child, so as a child of this age wouldn't know what was best for them I have to be Harry's best advocate and decide what is best for his well-being.

Then and Now.......It must be time for some embarrassing photos 🙈.

The first picture I think I was around 8 years old and the second, well a lot older 😁. Dogs have always been such a huge part of my life. My first dog Dylan in the first picture was a Welsh Springer Spaniel and was in my life from the age of 6 months old so inevitably we had a very strong bond. He was always a huge emotional support to me.

Since then I have always had dogs in my life, when Harry came to us when he was just 8 weeks old, I quickly realised that his calm, bright and confident manner would make him an ideal therapy dog, and so the birth of Heal with Harry began.

It has been said that an interaction with a dog for just 10 minutes may reduce stress levels in the body and boost oxytocin levels (the happy hormone) and provide valuable companionship.

I certainly know this to be true, the effects Harry has on all the people we visit are visible.

Well how wrong were they....

Working with dogs has always been my biggest passion I feel so lucky to do something I enjoy so much.

Educating children on how to interact with dogs is also really important to me and where I get so much joy. With the big increase in dog ownership Its never been so important for children to learn positive interactions with canines. Basically I love working with children and animals.

In my dog safety workshops I talk to the children about positive interaction and how to stay safe. Harry always joins me in these workshops and together we show how we interact safely.

Harry and I have been visiting St Charles Primary for quite some time now and this is where our therapy journey began, it feels like coming home each time we visit. This is a wonderful school we are always made to feel very welcome by the children and staff.
We have been supporting the children with their wellbeing and reading.

We have also talked about Harrys golden rules and how to interact with dogs safely.
