Quails for fun. We keep lots of different colours of Quails. These are mainly Giants.

Quail chicks are 16 days old and growing very fast, they have move into the big cage and I’m trying a new water dispenser which they like and is working well-with it up on bricks they can’t fill it with bedding.
We have 20 Italian, 9 Pharaoh and 6 Rosetta.
Surplus ones will be ready at 4-5 weeks as soon as I can s*x them- slightly longer for the non-feather s*xable Rosetta.
Last hatch of the year is going into lock down on the 26th July- these are from the Italian group only- so fingers crossed for all Italians.

I do love the egg size range from the young hens- first eggs at 5 weeks and 4 days, the girls are now nearly 8 weeks and laying an egg a day. big eggs weighs in at 21g to the little one at 10g.
We have POL Trios available and hatching eggs. 😀🐣🐥🐔

It's been a long time since I posted. In 2022 I only hatched a few birds which I kept. This year we have been a little bit more productive. Hatching from a group of 5 the girls- Giant Pharaoh with a Rooster from the year before- a Giant Rosetta Tuxedo. (his 13oz)
What a bird he is -first batch out of 54 eggs only 4 were not fertile. Hatched 30 (humility issues)- ended up with 28 -11 hens and 17 boys (bu**er). The girls start laying at 6 weeks.- we have 3 available with one of the many c**k birds- lucky boy.
Hatch 2 again a good fertility rate- 38 chicks- only 3 weeks old so i'm still looking at s*xes.
Hatch 3 - moved into the brooder yesterday- I think there are 44.
Colours are Italian, Pharaoh and Rosetta.
So we have birds available.
Also hatching eggs.

I have a large group of 20 Quails looking for a new home.
Last years birds - still laying well, some are a bit tatty, but will feather up when they moult- they are 11 months old.
18 Italian Hens- some Giants with two Roosters.
Giant Italian boy and a young ( 7 weeks) very large Pharaoh boy.
Ideal for the bottom of an aviary - they get along as well as quail do,

They will be available for collection between the 12th-16th October. -Just waiting on their replacements to start laying.

One of the Quail is claiming that she laid one of these eggs!!!!
11 weigh 65g the 12'th 134g........would of brought a tear to the eye.

Lock down on hatch number 10.
With my new incubator- fingers crossed this goes well.
80 eggs put in 15 days ago- ive just candled them and 24 are empty. one batch from the young Tuxedo boy- so his not doing his job- but then I do think he is scared of his 13oz wife,
So lock down with 56.

Turning trays out- water in, anti slip mat and a little tub of feed for the early hatchers........

Very pleased with hatch 9- 14 chicks.
We have three Blue Tuxedo's one very light that looks white at the moment
the others are-4 normal Tuxedo's- one has black legs which looks really weird and I'm not sure where the 7 whites came from-as i've only got one white hen.

Hatch 8- just started- first one out - he is our 100th chick.
Fingers crossed this goes smoothly and they all get out. First time hatching my Tuxedo eggs..........

With hatch 6 again taking 4 days to hatch-and then having to help the last 5 out of their shells - I think possible the temperature reading is not correct - ended up with 13 alive- really sad as there were another 9 dead in their shells. Hopefully hatch 7 with 55 eggs will be Ok- now we have got the incubator reading the same as our new probes. Will know in 5 days.......will either have lots of chicks or chucking dead eggs away.
Hatch 8- started off yesterday and so far both gauges reading the same. The outside gauge has an alarm so if it goes below 37 or above 38 it goes off.

Th 6 nearly 7 week old Tuxedo's are laying and one girl has not got it quite right yet. Three days running a monster egg 20grams and all double yolk. The only Texas girl is laying- hers is the little egg at the end- beautiful colour but very small.

New toy arrived yesterday.
Now all set up with 55 eggs.
48 Italian and 7 Blue-I picked the rounded ends in the Blue.-hoping for hens.
Mixed thoughts about how good the incubator will be, as it has mixed reviews.
I like that it is fully automatic temp and humidity gauge although we thought this was running hot so have set it down a fraction. I like the egg candler- as you can do them all in one press of a button without taking the eggs out. There is also a hole to add water without taking the top off. We are going to dry hatch till lock down.
Fingers crossed for batch 7.
Batch 6 are due to hatch Sunday.

Fourth batch now 2 weeks old.
Out of 11 Giant Tuxedo eggs we got 8 chicks, from 12 Texas A&M's only 4. Just got to wait now and try and s*x them.
Photos not the best they are very fast.
