Meet Bobby.

Bobby is an overseas rescue Dachshund mix. Walks are incredibly overwhelming and we've also had some aggression towards new people in the house.
.
His owners are super dedicated and doing everything they can to support him. The key here is to stop putting him in the position where he feels unsafe (walks - temporarily), creating predictability and a set routine when visitors come to keep everyone safe, and building comfort and engagement for walks as well as the skills of how to walk on a lead.

Darwin helps me with a lot of reactivity clients. He is not a social dog- he would much rather not meet or interact with other dogs and will sit quite calmly during these sessions. This is often what the other dog needs- no reaction to their reaction.

Once she showed us she can cope, we then upped the anti by reducing the distance. Al dictated by Storm. We set her up to succeed, the whole time.

Juniors class last week were working on their loose lead walking, heelwork and how to negotiate turns with no lead tension.
These guys have worked super hard with their lead walking and know that it doesn't happen overnight. But their hard work is paying off as we had some lovely heel walking from our teenagers this week!

It's one of the hardest things to try and teach our dogs because
1. Our dogs are naturally much faster than us
2. It's a really bizarre concept to have an animal on a bit of string
3. We are just not that interesting out and about!
.
Competing motivators, environmental factors, previous learning or training experience, too high expectations, overwhelm, hormones are just a few things that can make training this a challenge.
.
It is not something that comes naturally to dogs nor is it something we should expect them to do "for the love they have for us". No. Dogs are not robots. We need to teach them why it's a good idea to stick near us, create incentives and habits and be consistent with them. Then we set small, achievable goals so we don't get disheartened and frustrated at our end of the lead.

A really important behaviour that I think every dog should know- being able to leave food or items dropped on the floor can be crucial for keeping your dog safe. As well as applying this to items and eventually people and dogs.

Here is an example of my training NOT going to plan with my own pup. I wanted to work both the boys together but I had severely underestimated the amount of self control needed for Watson (the pup) and how much of a distraction Darwin would be for him

Juniors class went introduced their "middle" behaviour. This is such a nice exercise, and as well as being fun to teach, it's got some really handy uses in real life scenarios.

Not only is it great for nervous dogs, by providing them a safe position in the presence of triggers, it can also fill the owner with confidence, as a control position. I also like to tag this on the end of our recalls, to make these more fun and engaging for the dog. It also, just is quite a cool trick to show off with.

Bourbons owners originally called me for some resource guarding issues. Having sorted these, they also wanted help around behaviour on walks- pulling, minor reactivity, recall and general engagement - there wasn't any!

Frank has been rushed by off lead black dogs, leading to him becoming increasingly nervous and reactive around unfamiliar, large, black dogs.

Understandably his owner wanted to help him and learn ways to help him snap out of his fixation and reduce the chances and intensity of reactions.

At the moment, a lot of ewes you see when out on a walk will be pregnant. Keep your dogs on a lead when around livestock ALL year round but it is sooo important at the moment.

Bourbon has been smashing his exercises that I've set throughout our sessions. We haven't had an incidence of guarding at all, and we are definitely improving with our alert barking and jumping up at visitors.

Here he is working on his Loose lead walking. He's a fizzy boy, and knows he can use his weight to pull. So we are changing what leash pressure means to him.
