It's a bit geeky but if you needed anymore reasons not to neuter too early or investigate hormone sparing sterilisation (hysterectomy, vasectomy)... This is worth a read ๐Ÿ‘

Remember no one is arguing the need for sterilization, it's the surgical technique that should be reevaluated. Hysterectomy and vasectomy achieve the same goal but leave important hormones intact according to science.

"The association between gonadectomy and timing of gonadectomy, and the risk of canine cranial cruciate ligament disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract
Objective - To determine if gonadectomy in dogs is associated with the risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CrCLD) and to quantify the magnitude of the association.

Study design - Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sample population - Comparative studies with gonadectomized and entire dogs, with CrCLD as an outcome measure.

Methods - A systematic search of the primary and gray literature was performed. The effect size of the outcome measure was defined as the OR and 95% CI. Subgroup analysis was performed with s*x, breed, and age at gonadectomy. A pooled OR (95% CI) was generated from meta-analysis of relevant studies. Certainty in the body of evidence was rated with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework.

Results - The literature search yielded 1398 results and 24 relevant studies were included for synthesis. Gonadectomized female (pooled OR = 2.293, 95% CI = 1.768โ€“2.945) and male (pooled OR = 2.117, 95% CI = 1.665โ€“2.691) dogs were both at increased odds of developing CrCLD in comparison with entire female and male dogs, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that gonadectomy at 1 year or less was consistently associated with an increase in odds of developing CrCLD in both s*xes. Overall certainty in the evidence was rated as moderate. All included studies were observational and no controlled trials were available.

Conclusion - In data with moderate certainty, gonadectomy is associated with increased odds of developing CrCLD in both s*xes, particularly in dogs gonadectomized at 1 year of age or less.

Clinical significance - This study provides an estimate of the true effect size of gonadectomy on the odds of developing CrCLD, which may be useful for clinical decision making surrounding gonadectomy and the timing of gonadectomy."

So that's a wrap!

It's been a difficult year for me personally (started a new business in June and divorced in Oct) but I have much to be thankful for and I'm excited for 2025 ๐Ÿ˜Š

I want to say a huge thank you to my family, friends and clients who've supported me throughout the year and made my darker days that little bit brighter.

The cards and presents have been overwhelming this year and so thoughtful (your homemade macaroons were devoured the same day Jill ๐Ÿคค).
Thank you all so much.

I love working with you and your dog's and I honestly couldn't think of a better way to spend my time.

So after 351 days straight .... I have almost 2 weeks off work ๐Ÿ˜... I'm back with your doggies on 2nd Jan.

Happy holidays and I look forward to seeing you all in the new year.

I've been encouraging Tarka (doberman) to hold a toy in her mouth when engaging with other dogs as this prevents her getting too bitey and intense.

However, when the balls were put away.. shy and timid Boomer decided that Tarka's toy would have do and he was prepared to fight her for it ๐Ÿ’ช....as long as there was no actual fighting involved ๐Ÿฅน

Boomer is usually so shy and submissive that I don't know which one of us was more shocked by his sudden confidence, but it was so good to see him interacting with another dog and I managed to capture it on film as proof.

For anyone wondering.... Boomer won the tug game but only because youngsters have short attention spans.

For anyone following the appeal to overhaul BSL (Breed Specific Legislation)... The case was heard yesterday in court and now we wait for a decision ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

Many good dogs and good owners are crossing their paws today that this injustice is corrected.

Same dog almost 3 years apart โค๏ธ

I created the post below for Dora when she first came to visit me as a goofy puppy in Jan 2022 and the second photo is just last week.

The floppy tongue hasn't changed one bit Dora ๐Ÿ˜‚ but you did grow in to a beautiful leonberger (just like the Wikipedia description)

Toby and his broccoli ๐Ÿฅฆ toy

Toby formed a very close friendship with a broccoli toy at my field, so when it was chewed up by another dog and casually thrown away, he was devastated ๐Ÿฅบ

Brocoli toy has been replaced and Toby's life is once again complete ๐Ÿ˜Š

Pictured with his little bro Loki.
