It’s competition time! To be in with a chance, just share your most creative “paws up!” picture with the hashtag #pawsitivepawsup by January 30th. The best one will be independently selected and the winner announced on January 31st at 19:00.
If you need any more help achieving “Paws Up!” Then drop us a message. This is Little Luka’s first ever try so we’ll be on the lookout for locations to inspire you guys through the challenge! Remember #pawsitivepawsup
Recall is one of the most important skills your dog can learn, which is why it’s a key focus in our Puppy Skills course. Here are a few essential do’s and don’ts to keep in mind:
Don’t:
• Depend on their name alone—there may be 20 other Bellas in the park!
• Only call them back when the walk is ending or when something unpleasant is about to happen.
• Let them off the lead too early before they’re ready.
Do:
• Use a unique nickname or a technique like “touch,” which we cover in class.
• Make yourself the most exciting thing in their environment—we teach games to help with this.
• Reward them with what they love most, whether that’s treats, toys, or praise.
• Use a longline for safety and practice.
• Let them have time to simply enjoy being a dog.

I’m considering hosting a recall masterclass this year for dogs who’ve mastered the basics but could use a little extra help with recall. Would you be interested? Let me know in the comments!
Positive rewards don’t always have to be food! It’s important to find what works best for your dog! Treats, toys or verbal praise…all work in their own way. What works best for you? Let me know in the comments
So now Luka is able to go on walks, it’s super important to me that he has a recall that works. Time and again I, and clients, find the hand touch method to be the most successful. It gives a clear verbal and visual signal of what you expect your dog to do. This video was taken after 5 minutes of training. How is your dog’s recall? Let me know in the comments
What a fantastic time we had at our first-ever Christmas Pawty! The festive spirit was in full swing, and it was a joy to see the dogs (and their humans) having such a brilliant time.
Our paws-on painting session was a huge hit, with each dog creating their very own masterpiece to take home—some impressive little artists in the making! It was lovely to see tails wagging during the musical sits game, where everyone showed off their training skills while having plenty of fun - despite the technical hitches! Huge thanks to Ian for judging - a very tricky task! And, of course, the puppachinos were an absolute delight—there were lots of happy, frothy snouts around the room! Thanks to the top barista aka my mum!
We also captured some wonderful pictures throughout the event to remember the day. These moments of joy and festive cheer are exactly what makes these gatherings so special. It was so wonderful seeing pups old and new, and of course the lovely humans who come with them.
If you missed out this time, keep an eye out for our next event—we’d love to see you there. Thank you to everyone who joined us and made the day so magical!
As we start rounding up the year, we often find ourselves reflecting on how things have gone. Helping clients like Willow and her family is why I love what I do!
Willow and her family came to the first Puppy Skills course we ran in Pegswood, and we chatted about how tricky recall can be around distractions in Border Terriers. They progressed through the course, doing their homework each week and Willow blossomed! We used the hand touch technique for recall and a couple of weeks after the course ended I got sent this video. It truly fills me with joy when clients see real life results. It’s not down to me, it’s all about the teamwork at Pawsitive Skills!
What’s been your favourite success story this year? Share it with me below—I’d love to hear!
Doug was excited to show Stella his favourite enrichment game he learned in Adolescent Skills last week. This one is always a big hit and is so easy to replicate at home!
Join me for yesterday’s “a day in the life of”! It was a quiet one with no classes, so spend time behind the scenes!
Today little Willow learnt an emergency stop. It’s great that the whole family get involved and recognise the need for skills like this going forward. How cute is she please? #pawsitiveskills #dogtrainingnorthumberland #borderterrier #puppytraining #pegswood #dogtraining
In Adolescent Skills we train an emergency stop. This can be vital if your dog runs off or is in danger. Boson hasn’t ever learned emergency stop before, and this is him on his second session of “kettle training”. It goes to show just how important hand signals are!

So we talked about using nicknames for recall, in class we mostly focus on the ability to use the touch command for recall. Look at amazing 5 month old Willow, a border terrier, recalling from a distance for her family! I remember having the conversation as to whether you could get a Border to recall - I think this right here is the answer! One proud trainer!
