📣 MEET OUR LATEST ARRIVAL 👉 THE GOOTY ORNAMENTAL TARANTULA

Have you ever seen a blue spider before? 👀👀👀

💙 Their striking blue colouration is actually one of the reasons that this species is listed as 'Critically Endangered' on the IUCN Red List, as they are targeted by the illegal pet trade

🇮🇳 This fascinating spider species is found in the wild in just ONE location, which is less than 100km² and facing continued threats from human activities

🚨 These threats combined put this unique creature at high risk of extinction in the near future. But, zoos are stepping in to save them!

🧬 We're proud to start playing an active role in safeguarding this species for the future through a European coordinated conservation programme! Meaning zoos in Europe are working together to care for a genetically diverse and healthy population of the species to support their wild counterparts

📣 MEET ANOTHER RESIDENT OF CLOSE ENCOUNTERS 👉 THE TURQUOISE DWARF GECKO

🌍 The turquoise dwarf gecko is a critically endangered species native to a small region in Tanzania 🇹🇿

🤝 Luckily, zoos like ours are working to protect them as part of a coordinated conservation programme across Europe

👀 FUN FACT: This species is dimorphic, meaning the males and females look different! Males are actually bright blue whilst females are green or brown

🦎 Keep your eyes peeled for our small, but striking, pair in their BRAND-NEW habitat

📣 CLOSE ENCOUNTERS SPECIES UPDATE...

🐸 Our Chapa bug eyed frogs have been preparing to move into Close Encounters from their current home in Gibbon Forest

🌍 This endangered species inhabits humid and mossy environments at elevations as high as 3,400 metres!!

👀 They blend into this environment using their greenish body as camouflage amongst forest debris, often nicknamed the mossy frog, because they look just like moss

📣 NEW NEIGHBOUR ALERT ... 📣

Our Chinese crocodile lizard will be OFFICIALLY moving from Gibbon Forest into a brand-new habitat in Close Encounters 🦎

👀 This endangered lizard is the last surviving species of it's family, so we're proud to be caring for them here at the zoo

FUN FACT 🐊 Unlike most reptiles, this species gives birth to live young, rather than laying eggs. These young are precocial, meaning they can care for and feed themselves from the moment they are born!!
