Back home, we sat in the runway for 90 minutes after a 5 minute snowfall meant we had to wait in line for deicing and we walked in the door at 2am.

I have messages and emails to respond to which I will work through, I just have some Mother Christmas duties to attend to 🤶

Christmas trees 🌲

Don't know what to do with your finished tree after christmas? These two would absolutely love any real Christmas trees to snack on once you are done with them!

Clean trees that haven't been sprayed with anything are ideal for them. Will happily come and collect from you too 🙏

Who would like to make a goats Christmas/new year? 🤣🎄

They thank you in advance 🐐

Children can have such a fabulous relationship with dogs and dogs in turn can teach children so many fantastic things; leadership, responsibility, love, friendship, kindness, sorrow… the list really does go on.

However, the relationship between our children and our dogs needs to be managed to make sure they both benefit, and yes, they do need to be supervised at all times… and yes, they should never be left alone together.

When I work with people who have dogs and young families, there’s always resistance to this: “I trust my dog, he would never hurt my child”, “they love each other so much my daughter climbs into his dog bed”, “they play chase for hours”, “my daughter loves to dress the dog up”, and on it goes…

While this is all very lovely and straight out of a Disney movie, it really is a potential disaster waiting to happen.

So now more than ever, as we are distracted by the festivities and getting ready for Xmas, with little ones potentially running around, please be aware of your dog's communication and stress levels, and rather than risk an accident, leave your dog out of the thick of it where he can just relax and be a dog...

Week 6: Adding Distractions to "Send to Bed"

🎯 Objective: Teach your dog to go to their bed and stay there even with distractions present.

Instructions:

1. Set Up Distractions: Begin with minimal distractions, like having a family member walk around or a toy on the floor.

2. Send to Bed Command: Use the "send to bed" command while the distractions are present.

3. Gradually Increase Distractions: Once they are successful with minimal distractions, increase the challenge by introducing more intense distractions (e.g., a toy being thrown, a doorbell ringing, or background noise).

4. Stay Calm: If they get up before you release them, calmly lead them back to the bed without scolding. Repeat the command and reward them for staying on the bed despite the distractions.

5. Celebrate Success: If they manage to stay on their bed with distractions, give them lots of praise and rewards.

🥇 Reward System: Use a combination of treats, praise, and playtime as rewards. Make the experience positive, so they associate distractions with staying on their bed.

Recap for the Final Week: Focus on reinforcing the "send to bed" command with various distractions in the environment. Celebrate their successes, no matter how small, to build their confidence.

🐾 Meet the Labrador Retriever! 🐾

Labradors are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world, and for good reason!

Known for their friendly and outgoing nature, they can make excellent family pets.

Originally bred as fishing and hunting companions, they are natural swimmers and have a strong retrieving instinct.

Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them superb service dogs as well. 🦮❤️

If you have a Labrador puppy or older dog and need some help with a training issue or would like to know how you can enhance their lives with breed specific training then get in touch with Mel on 07442974421 or via the website https://melnewtondogtraining.co.uk to find out what training packages we offer.

I don’t know a single person who hasn’t at some point needed more poo bags or has lost their poo bags.

We’re currently in Prague and while wondering around one of the green spaces in the city I was impressed with this incentive to encourage dog owners to pick up after their dogs. Well done Prague!

Two things I’ve noticed so far:

🐾 every dog I’ve seen has impeccable lead manners
🐾 every dog I’ve seen has been neutral to other people and their environment

One of my clients has recently been in touch as they received an email advising them that their dogs microchip registration had expired.

This email has been confirmed as a scam by my client’s vet and a very clever one at that! The pet name, microchip number and other personal details were correct.

It is always a good idea to double check your contact details are uptodate, but if you receive such an email please take a moment to check it is genuine.

Many thanks to Geraldine for the heads up.

🐾 Training Tip Thursday

🌟 Use positive reinforcement!

Let’s talk about crate training..

I love a crate and I actively encourage dog owners to consider crate training for a variety of reasons.

Yesterday I posted about in season bi***es. All our dogs are crate trained so they can be separated if and when the need arises.
Being content in a crate means when we can’t supervise them Wren isn’t hassled by Chase and Chase isn’t stressed by not being able to get to Wren.
She’s currently feeling sorry for herself being in season.

🐾 to keep a young puppy out of mischief while they cannot be supervised
🐾 to support rest for a dog that has an injury or has had surgery
🐾 to provide a safe space for your dog to go when your house is busy
🐾 to help with house training
🐾 to prevent unwanted chewing of furniture
🐾 to familiarise with being in a confined space such as kennels, at the vets or transport
🐾 to support the management of separation anxiety
🐾 to establish a good routine for puppies, older dogs and rescue dogs

‼️ crates should never be used as punishment and always as a safe space for your pup or older dog
‼️crates should always be appropriately sized with suitable bedding and water available

If you need help with the successful integration of a crate into your routines then contact Mel for friendly, practical help and advice on 07442 974421

🔍 Did you know?

🐩 Dogs communicate through body language and most humans can’t read canine body language very well.

🐕 Tail wagging, barking, and even their posture can reveal how they’re feeling.

🐕‍🦺 Pay attention to their signals but remember to take into consideration the context and environment.

🌟 Week 5: Adding Distance to "Send to Bed"

🎯 Objective: Teach your dog to go to their bed from a distance.

Instructions:

1. Send to Bed Command: Start by sending your dog to their bed from a short distance.

2. Gradually Increase Distance: Move further away from the bed before giving the command, rewarding them for successfully going to their bed.

3. Practice from Different Angles: Try sending them from different angles and positions around the room to help them generalize the command.

4. Reward Consistently: As they successfully go to their bed from further distances, continue to mark and reward each success.

5. Use a Release Cue: After a few seconds on the bed, use a release command like “OK” to let them know they can come off the bed.

Reward System: Continue using a mix of food and praise. The more excited you are when they succeed from a distance, the more motivated they’ll be!

Recap for Next Week: Focus on getting your dog to go to their bed from varying distances and angles. Ensure they understand the release cue after staying on the bed.

A question I’m often asked is can a training session take place while a bitch is in season.

🐾 Well… technically yes, as long as the season is taking place without complications then exercise and training can continue.

🐾 But… as a dog owner with a bitch in season at the moment, here are some significant behavioural changes I’ve noticed in Wren.

•sensitivity and neediness
•increased whining
•dislike of the resident stud dog
•some lethargy

🐾 All of these could impact on successful outcomes of any training sessions so why set her up to fail?

🐾 Not to mention, she could be hounded by other male dogs, once her bleeding finishes she is the fertile and ready for mating. Why risk the chance of an unwanted pregnancy?

🐾 While my bi***es are in season they’ll rest, have mental stimulation, on lead walks away from other dogs and of course be watched like a hawk so that we don’t have an unwanted pregnancy. Sadly it also means they won’t be working on shoots until their season is fully over.

🐾 We expected Lilly to come into season this week, not Wren, she’s a month early.. I reckon we’ll have both in season by Christmas.. 😬😉

🌟If you have a session booked or are due to attend a class and your bitch comes into season please contact Mel, I will do my best to offer an alternative solution to you.

Lovely words from another happy client 😍

‘Mel is an exceptional dog trainer! Her 1:1 walk-to-lead training for our 1-year-old Springer Spaniel was incredible. Mel listened carefully to our challenges and within just 10 minutes, our hyper, lead-pulling Springer who was far too interested in everything else but us, was outdoors walking calmly beside me on a loose lead, frequently giving eye contact. I couldn't believe it - it was like l had been lying! 🤣 Mel’s ability to clearly articulate her teaching methods is second to none, making the process straightforward and effective. Mel is absolute gold dust—I highly recommend her to anyone needing dog training support!’ Lindsey W.

We all know how curious our dogs can be, especially when it comes to food. But did you know that some common human foods can be toxic to dogs?

Grapes and Raisins 🍇
These seemingly innocent fruits can cause severe kidney damage in dogs. Even a small amount can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. So, if you’re baking mince pies this holiday season, make sure to keep those grapes and raisins in a secure spot!

Chocolate 🍫
Who doesn’t love chocolate? But for dogs, it’s a big NO! Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and can cause symptoms ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to seizures and even death. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous, so keep those sweet treats out of reach!

Alcohol 🍺
It might seem funny to think of a dog sipping a beer, but alcohol is extremely dangerous for them. Even small amounts can lead to vomiting, disorientation, and in severe cases, respiratory failure. Always make sure your drinks are safely stowed away!

Cooked Bones 🍖
While it might seem natural to give your dog a leftover bone, cooked bones can splinter and cause serious injuries to their digestive tract. Instead, opt for dog-safe raw bones or specially designed chew toys to keep their teeth healthy!

Nuts 🥜
Certain nuts, like macadamia nuts, can be highly toxic to dogs, leading to symptoms like weakness, tremors, and hyperthermia. Even peanuts, while generally safe, can pose a choking hazard if not fed carefully.

What Should You Do If Your Dog Eats Something Toxic?
If you suspect that your dog has ingested any of these toxic foods, don’t panic! Instead, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice.

Remember, keeping these foods out of reach is just one way to ensure your dog's safety. Always be mindful of what’s around and educate your family, friends, and guests about these dangers too.
