Vasectomising rams creates a teaser ram which can be used as a breeding tool to get ewes cycling via pheromones. They are put in with the ewes before the main breeding ram and are a useful way to condense lambing.

A reminder for calving & lambing season.

The Recovery Position, Donโ€™t Take Their Breath Away

Calving sometimes doesnโ€™t go as well as it could. Problems happen, sometimes it seems, for no reason. Sometimes you will have a calf born that isnโ€™t active the moment he hits the ground. If heโ€™s having trouble breathing, we must stimulate his respiration and make it as easy as possible for him to breathe.

First off, we must get him breathing, there are several methods one can use to stimulate a newborn to start and continue breathing. One is to rub him actively; this simulates what his mother would do. Using a piece of straw to poke in his nose or even your fingers to squeeze his septum may help. These are the most common methods we use to stimulate a calf to breathe. Other ideas include pouring cold water on the calf, or in the calfโ€™s ear, these are designed to shock him into breathing. I have to admit, I have never done this.

Once you have him breathing semi regularly, the best thing you can do is to sit him up in the โ€˜Recovery Positionโ€™. This position is designed to make it as easy as possible for him to expand his lungs. This position has the calf sitting upright, with both back legs pulled forward along his sides and his front legs stretched out in front of him. With a really weak calf, you may still have to support him in some way.

The old-fashioned thought to hang or swing the calf is not a recommended way to help get them to breathe. The idea was that it drained fluid out of the calfโ€™s lungs, and it does drain fluid out of the calf. However, this fluid DOES NOT come from the lungs, but rather the stomach. What hanging or swinging them DOES DO, is to actually put more pressure on the diaphragm and lungs and in fact makes it much more difficult for the calf to start and continue breathing.

So, to sum up

DO
1. Stimulate breathing by
โ€ข Using a piece of straw to tickle his nostril
โ€ข Squeezing the septum (flesh between the nostrils) with your fingers
โ€ข Rub the calf vigorously
โ€ข Pour cold water on the calf or in its ear (to shock it into gasping)
2. Use the RECOVERY POSITION

DO NOT
1. Hang the calf over a gate or fence
2. Swing the calf by its back legs
