Did you know? At Hill’s Canine Rehabilitation, we use the Ruffwear Front Range Harness during our pool and underwater treadmill sessions. We also have a different style of harness to avoid needing to pick your dogs front legs up, this is commonly used for dogs with elbow dysplasia and other conditions affected by balance and bending of the front legs.
This high-quality harness is Y-shaped, which means it allows for natural shoulder movement and doesn’t restrict your dog’s mobility — a key part of safe and effective rehabilitation.
Whether your dog is recovering from surgery, managing a condition, or simply building strength and mobility, we’re committed to using the best equipment to support their journey.

Massage isn’t just a treat – it’s a powerful tool in your dog’s recovery!
Here’s Sid enjoying some gentle palpation and massage as part of his physiotherapy session. This hands-on approach helps us:
• Identify tension and areas of discomfort
• Improve circulation and lymphatic drainage
• Support muscle recovery and joint mobility
• Promote relaxation and reduce pain
Every dog is different, so we tailor our physio sessions to suit their specific needs — and yes, that often includes plenty of soothing massage time.
If your dog is recovering from injury, surgery, or struggling with stiffness or arthritis, we’re here to help.
A big grin to make you smile this Wednesday morning 🐾✨

Proprioception - How can therapists help?
Written by Jazz Benton
Injury, surgery and chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis lead to inflammation in soft-tissue and skeletal structures. This often comes with pain and changes in biomechanics causing a patient to alter their gait and posture. Information received by the CNS is likely to be distorted due to altered mechanoreceptors which can further impact gait and cause reduced proprioception and proprioceptive deficits in more severe cases. Altered gait and posture will cause pain and compensatory patterns so it is important for us therapists to address during our sessions!
Proprioception and hydrotherapy- what can we do?
The properties of water such as hydrostatic pressure, buoyancy and viscosity provide a proprioceptively enriched environment for the dog during treatment.
Hydrostatic pressure provides stability and an external sensory stimulus to receptors in the limbs and body. This pressure will improve sensory feedback and body awareness.
In the underwater treadmill (UWTM) the dog remains weight bearing in water which allows proprioceptive input through the paw pads on the textured belt.
We also have the benefit of being hands on in the UWTM with the dog during motion. This allows us to use sensory stimulation techniques to specific areas of the dog to increase their body awareness and optimise gait patterning.
Rest breaks in the UWTM are the perfect time to carry out some proprioceptive exercises with the support of the water. This can include things like paw pressuring/grounding, tickling/stroking, passive range of motion and weight shifting.
When indicated, we also use external stimuli, commonly hair scrunchies around the distal limb, to increase proprioception. This can be bilaterally, on the contralateral limb to improve loading or on the affected limb to improve AROM depending on patient presentation.
During physiotherapy sessions, owners will be given a range of easy proprioceptive exercises to try at home, these will be demonstrated in the clinic and we can provide video reminders. We will also discuss with the owner simple home adjustments to proprioceptively enrich the patient’s environment, this could be different textured mats for grip and stability or different ramps and walk ways.

Meet Fudge 🐾
On land Fudge gets about using wheels and being supported with a hindlimb harness but in the water she is able to get some movement from her legs and we are able to achieve a improved movement with help (passive range of movement)
Keep up the good work 😍
Let’s see things from Fudges point of view 👀
Transformation Tuesday 🤩🐾
Can you believe that these videos were taken only 4 sessions apart. Beau has started session with us to help with his water confidence, cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength as he starts his agilty career
As you can see in the bottom video, he is clinging onto Katherine asking for reassurance and needs lots of time and support as well as being in a buoyancy aid whereas in the top video he has progressed to following a toy in the water, swimming in a non buoyancy aid (harness) and managing different direction changes
Well done Beau!! 🤩🐾
It is so nice to see how much improvement he has made in a short space of time. Super proud 🥹
Previously known as Hamilton’s Canine Hydrotherapy. On the 1st of September Lynne Hamilton handed over her business and lovely clients to Katherine Hill ready for her big move to Kent.
Hamilton’s has been established since 2009 and has grown as a business. Lynne went from being the only employee to having an office manager (Tracey) followed by other Canine Hydrotherapists (Ellie, Tracey, Amy and Katherine).
Ellie and Tracey are still swimming dogs alongside Katherine with the passion to rehabilitate small animals, improving there quality of life and reduce pain.
Hill’s Canine Hydrotherapy, Grendon Underwood, Bucks is a safe, friendly, professional centre and is a full member of the Canine Hydrotherapy Association (CHA).
All our staff are qualified to the required level and are all members of the CHA. We work as a highly efficient team and love what we do!
We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction and achieving the best results possible. We allow plenty of time for your dog to get used to its surroundings and we never rush them into the pool. All dogs will be required to wear a canine life jacket or simple harness which we will provide. The length of each swim will depend on the condition, ability of your dog and the recommendation of your vet.
All dogs swum at Hill's Canine Hydrotherapy must have gained their vets CONSENT (not direct referral) . This safeguards your dog from any medical conditions that may be present and would dictate the level of swimming. Many dogs do come to us through direct veterinary referral. We have a simple form that needs completing prior to your visit, this can be found on our website as well on our page. We are confident to liaise with your vet and will send regular progress reports with regard to surgical and rehabilitation cases.
Please feel free to call us if you’d like to have a chat and for us to fill in your consent form.
What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy basically means healing with water. There is a huge range of conditions that benefit from hydrotherapy and many insurance companies will cover treatment. Conditions include:-
Pre and Post operative conditions.
Pain, swelling and stiffness (arthritis, veteran dogs).
Hip and elbow dysplasia, OCD, cruciate ligament injuries.
Spinal injuries, paralysis, amputation (strengthens muscles, increases range of movement, promotes overall blood circulation).
Cardiovascular fitness (improves heart and lung function). Excellent for working, agility, racing and show dogs. A five minute swim is roughly equivalent to a five mile run!
Obesity (weight loss in conjunction with diet) and weight management.
Behavioural problems. Swimming allows your dog to release his energy in a safe and healthy manner. This in turn helps to rebalance his mental well being and may help reduce unwanted behaviour.
Because swimming is totally non weight bearing it is extremely useful with young large breed dogs where exercise may be restricted due to possible joint damage.
Puppy swims - these are designed for puppies over the age of 12 weeks. It is a great way to introduce your puppy to water and reassures you that should your puppy fall into water or perhaps require hydrotherapy in the future, they will have the confidence to swim. It also helps to build their confidence in new surroundings and with new noises (e.g. the hairdryer!). The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment not the length of swims.
Our Facilities
Our polypropylene pool is custom built and measures 3.8m x 2.4m and is 1.2m in depth. There is a built in internal ramp which is also used to rest the dogs during their swim. Access up to the pool edge is via a sturdy, gently sloping external ramp. Extra staff will be used to safely assist severely disabled dogs into the pool.
Swim jets are used to create a variable water flow. These can be adjusted for position and strength depending on size, condition and fitness of your dog. Jets help encourage movement in the water particularly useful for neurological damage, limb paralysis or fitness work.
The pool water is kept at a constant 29-30c. Warm water is proven to promote blood circulation which helps relax muscles, easing pain in joints, tendons, helps reduce swelling and aids overall healing.
Our pool is sanitised to the highest standard and the water is tested 2 times a day in line with CHA regulations and adjusted accordingly. These measures ensure a totally safe swim for each and every dog.
There is a fully tiled shower area next to the pool so that your dog can be washed before and after their swim. Towels and a dryer are provided so that we can ensure your dog leaves our centre as warm and dry as possible.
There is ample off road parking on site and a grassed area. It is imperative your dog relieves itself before swimming. (This hopefully avoids any "accidents" in the pool!).
