Those who know me know I used to be an army dog trainer. I learned two things while I was in the army working with dogs, both are still a daily part of my life.

First: you always sort your dog out before you sort yourself out.

Are they thirsty or hungry? Do they need anything at this point? Every day without fail, I follow this rule that I learned so many years ago. Dogs can’t just fill up a water bowl, they can’t stop a griping hunger in their stomach on their own, but we can. So I choose to meet their needs before I work on my own, and I always will.

Second: you always move at the slowest man’s pace.

This lesson taught me everything about living with older, slower dogs. As dogs get older, they run less. Older dogs sniff more. They sniff everything. Senior dogs might be stiff and achy and need to cover less ground, but they cover that ground at a slower pace.

Please consider their needs and go at their pace.

It’s not fair to leave them behind or pull them along.

Having your dog come back to you is one of the most important things that we teach them. Indeed, it can be a lifesaver. A dog who slips out of the front door...

FEEDING DRY PET FOOD OR TREATS? WHY YOU SHOULD BE ADDING THIS VEGETABLE TO THEIR DOG’S DIET! 🥕🐶

Pet food companies all around the globe are struggling to control mold levels🧫 in dry and canned pet food, with dozens of lawsuits developing over pet deaths.

Pets that eat food containing unsafe levels of these molds are highly susceptible to aflatoxin poisoning. These fungal toxins not only can cause organ damage and immune problems, consumption of aflatoxins has been associated with increased risk of developing liver cancer!

One easy way to counteract the harmful effects of aflatoxins is to feed apiaceous vegetables such as carrots.🥕 Carrots contain polyacetylenes, an unusual class of compounds that play an important role in detoxifying several cancer-causing substances, specifically these AFLATOXINS.

Eliminating aflatoxins from your dog’s body can be really difficult but serving up carrots is a great way to enhance the metabolism of these toxic compounds!

💁🏻‍♂️HOW TO FEED: Raw or cooked, carrots make great training treats or can be minced and added in with your dog’s food. Chop carrots into a bite-size pieces appropriate for your dog’s size. The green leaves of carrots can also be fed for an added boost of antioxidants and nutrients.

👉Looking for more DIY fresh food ideas to improve your dog's bowl or snacks?! In our book The Forever Dog we give you several lists of other great foods to feed for various reasons (anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, cognition and more) plus how much to feed to ensure you keep your pup’s nutrition in balance. www.foreverdog.com

GREEN-LIPPED MUSSEL: HELPING TO PUNCH AWAY YOUR PET’S JOINT PAIN!

Hundreds of years ago, the natives of the land, a tribe called the Maori consumed the green-lipped mussel raw almost every day of their lives. Consequently, the tribe rarely suffered from medical disorders such as arthritis, and other problems such as back pain and swollen joints.

After discovering the benefits of the green-lipped mussel within the Maori tribe, scientists began testing and experimenting on the mussels. The original mission was to find a natural alternative for treating patients with cancer, which unfortunately didn’t happen. Instead, they discovered that green-lipped mussels have other therapeutic aspects that can treat various medical conditions; most importantly arthritis.

As our canine and feline friends age, they too can experience the same discomforts brought on by joint disease. Unfortunately there isn’t a cure; however, there has been effectiveness shown for treating joint problems and arthritis through a variety of methods, including green-lipped mussel.

In addition to their inflammatory healing properties, these mussels are considered a superfood because they contain a huge variety of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, Omega-3 fats, antioxidants, enzymes, and many more nutrients.

GLM has been shown to be useful in the treatment of:
• bursitis, ankylosing spondylitis;
• lyme disease;
• skin inflammation;
• gastro-intestinal disorders;
• connective tissue repair and sports related injuries.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2002 says that the size of your pet is a key factor that must be taken into consideration when determining the right dosage of GLM. The simplest way to do the math is to follow this general rule: 15mg of powdered extract per 1 pound of pet’s body weight.

Take the plunge and add a little “mussel” to your pet’s diet!

Attention seeking behaviour...

This often starts when our dogs are puppies but goes right through into adulthood too...

Have a think about the time you spend with your dog, chances are you tend to unintentionally respond to and encourage your dogs attention seeking behaviours...

-He whimpers or whines and you stroke him
-He watches you eat your dinner with "pleading eyes" and you offer him some of your dinner
-He barks and you respond by getting his lead and taking him out
-He whines in his crate and you let him out

These are just a few examples of attention seeking behaviour which can develop into bigger problems if you continue to let your dog demand your attention. In a very short space of time you can unknowingly teach your dog that all these attention seeking behaviours work. Remember, you are training your dog all the time you are with him, whether you realise it or not.

Take time to teach your puppy or dog the behaviours you want, it'll save you spending the next few months or even years trying to stop the unwanted behaviours you have unknowingly encouraged...

March is Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month and we'd like to help everyone keep their pets safe

⚠️ If you think your pet may have been poisoned, SPEED is the thing to remember ⚠️

S - Stop the pet from eating any further suspected poison
P - Phone the vets immediately
E - Emergency appointment
E - Evidence. Bring any labels, samples, vomit that you can - provided you can keep yourself safe too
D - Don't delay!

Some of the dangers at this time of year which aren't necessarily obvious are:

Lilies, which can cause kidney failure in cats

Chocolate and sweets which contain xylitol, and are often in abundance around Easter time

Raisins, currants and sultanas found in hot cross buns - which can cause kidney failure in dogs

Fertilisers, weedkillers, slug pellets and plant bulbs - often being used at this time of the year

Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) - as little as a tablespoon of which can cause kidney failure in dogs, and as little as a teaspoon of which can cause kidney failure in cats.

Also remember the dangers hidden in plain sight - grapes, onions and garlic, ni****ne, human medication, and mouldy food, which your pet may grab hold of.

The sooner a pet receives treatment, the higher chance of a positive outcome. Never just 'wait and see' with a suspected poisoning.

SPEED!

Today’s The Forever Dog Longevity Tip 🐶
Add some apiaceous vegetables (e.g., carrots, cilantro, parsnips, fennel, celery, parsley) to your dog’s dry or canned food! 🥕

These gems contain polyacetylenes, an unusual class of organic compounds that has antibacterial AND antifungal benefits. They play a key role in detoxifying several cancer-causing substances, specifically MYCOTOXINS. Mycotoxins are tasteless, odorless fungal toxins found in pet food ingredients that cause organ damage and immune problems.

Eliminating mycotoxins from your dog’s body can be really difficult but serving up apiaceous veggies is a great way to enhance the metabolism of these toxic compounds!

Raw or cooked, carrots and parsnip slices make great training treats, while cilantro, parsley, and fennel can be minced and mixed in with your dog’s food.

This easy food hack is one of many simple strategies Rodney Habib and I include in The Forever Dog book to keep your dog healthy. Available now at https://foreverdog.com/dog-longevity-health-and.../
